I think that Alton was an inferior cook in these earlier seasons. Jarred salsa instead of cooking down your own vegetables? Maybe he was dating Sandra Lee back then...
"Allow me to present a service option: you put the chili in the bowl, you but the spoon in the chili, you put the chili in your mouth, how's that?" LOL
"let me suggest a service option you put the chili in the bowl you put the spoon in the chili and you put the chili in your mouth house's that?" love that part and this recipe actually works you just gotta watch when you do the meat first time i messed up and burnt it all to hell.
@GOLEAFS1967 Yes. I burned the bottom in a pressure cooker the first time I tried it so the next time I did it in a crockpot and it came out even better. I just cooked it until the meat was cooked through. That time it won me a small local chili competition by a landslide :D
Another very good episode of Good Eats. I was glad to see Alton included a how-to on making chili powder. It really is a huge improvement over the pre-made stuff at the grocery store. The addition of salsa is a little unusual, but I can see it working. It'd be kind of fun to experiment with some of the more exotic salsas out there now.
I liked the cowboy shtick, though (IMHO) a little of it went a long way. Had to be a fun part for Alton to play , though. :-)
Ditto to digitaljok. I am really glad that I read these comments into my first 1:15 of cooking. I checked the chili and was luckily able to salvage it. It was burning and drying out. I added an extra 1/4 beer and a cup of water. I also decided to add a can of diced tomatoes at that point because the salsa was almost completely disintegrated. Taste was really good though. Anyway, I turned the heat to 200 and I will check it periodically.
Just to reaffirm what Alton says here, the CASI (Chili Appreciation Society International) competition rules state that no filler is permitted in chili. This includes beans, amongst other things. So, if you enter in the Terlingua International Chili Championship, you won't be using beans. Them's the rules! That said, there's nothing wrong with serving them as a side dish and dumping them in your own personal bowl if you so choose. That's how I serve it at home.
It was also the very first time I ever used a pressure-cooker, so I was nervous... but it came out GREAT!!!
My only problem, it was more "brown" than "red" ... so I suggest another tablespoon of tomato paste, and it could've been more ticker so go with FOUR handfuls of tortilla chips... that's all XD You all try it out, it's the best bowl of red you'll ever eat!
I made this last night! It was DELICIOUS! Most chilis my family make are just... "spicy meat soup floating in broth" but not the chili I made! This was THICK, tangy, the meat tender, the spice just right! And the best part... NO BEANS!!! I'm the only one in my family that doesn't like beans... so yeah, every time chili is made, there's ALWAYS beans in it. Finally good to have it bean-less
This stuff is dang Tasty, its also double dang hot. Don't go adding more unless you knows whats yous doing! Luckly I knows what I am doing, Whoooo!
That was Great got a good laugh from it, now I am gonna cook up a pot of red.. for the beer I am gonna try some "Budweiser American Ale" and tell you later how it comes out!
I want to make the chilli with Bud American Ale also Energi2DmaxX, but you never came back to say how it turned out. I guess I'll have to do that after I make mine tonight :-)
Sorry about that, it came out great...just becareful if your using a pressure cooker.. you could burn the the meat and stuff on the bottom... I also added 2x 3x times the chili powder and double the chipotle
Gahhhh! Just did this in a dutch oven at 350 for 6 hours like it suggests in the video, and we ended up with some hard crusted spicy beef that we put in tacos! It sure was tasty though. Next time I'll just get a pressure cooker. Should have known that without more liquid it would dry out.
Doh, missed this comment before I tried this the first time in a dutch oven. Also experienced very dried out/burned batch after a few hours at 350 degrees which is way too hot. It only needs to gently cook so I figure 200-250 will be perfectly fine next time.
That has got to be the STRANGEST chili recipe I have ever heard. I know that tortilla chips and canned salsa are easier but that just does not seem right to me, but then again as I grew up mom and dad made real chili and it was really good. I guess I'm gonna have to give this one a try sometime just so I can say that I did.
I know he can't give out specific product names due to potential copyright infringement, so I guess my question is, just what is a good middle of the road ale?
May as well make your own beer, grow your own chilis, weld your own pots, collect your own herbs, carve your own wooden spoon and use a campfire while you're at it, eh?
Besides, this particular recipe has a story behind it from "I'm Just Here For the Food"...it originated as a challenge to make chili for the least amount of money possible. Often, it's cheaper to use salsa and chips.
What space does it take up? There is ample room for video comments And how does it possibly annoy you, after all it's just a youtube video comment. lol. Yeah, but the salsa adds a lot of flavor in little time.
And the chips are to thicken it. You either use tortilla chips of corn flour. So you're completely wrong there.
