@martynvk Incorrect. Tapping of the magazine on your helmet (or other hard object) is done to ensure that the rounds are seated correctly at the rear of the mag or you will have feed problems.

@martynvk It's not to "tap the dirt out". It's because if loaded magazines have been sitting around for a while before being used, the magazine spring sometimes "freezes" or gets a bit stuck, so it won't feed the way it should. Tapping the magazine a few times is just a way of jarring the spring loose, should it happen to be stuck.

@shermonruler The original M16 had lots of problems, primarily due to the usage of low quality "dirty" ammo. The original M16 wasn't even issued with a cleaning kit because it was believed to be so advanced it cleaned itself. The M16A1 was a much better improvement and didn't have all the problems people tend to associate with the M16.

@thechewydude Sometimes the rounds in the mag don't line up quite right and that can cause a jam or a feed problem. If you tap the mag against something hard, the rounds will all scoot to the back of the mag and they feed better.
