@Moppy1988 Because the entire concept of 'marriage' is a catholic tradition. Even though I'm atheist, I don't entirely support gay marriage as it trespasses on a religious tradition, however pathetic they are..
@149chris. lol, i can just imagine conservative americans (esp. those in the deep south) trying to translate her accent. And then when they find out she's atheist (and more left wing than any american democrat) -- they'll scream murder.
@Pupp3tMasterr whenever the New channels say the opinion polls pay attention to none of them aside from the ABC poll because thats more accurate than all the others.
I would vote for an atheist who has the courage of conviction as shown by Julia Gillard. She is trustworthy which is more than can be said to the pseudo self righteous who would bless babies trying to win votes like some clergy snake oil salesman peddling miracle water in ketchup packages in pretentious hypocrisy.
Well the majority of Australians didn't vote for an female Atheiest. She became a priminister though minor parties giving her support. I was a sad day for Australia when she became priminister. And yes she with the labour party is stuffing up everyhting the colition party worked hard on building. The biggest was being the only country in the World without dept.
@decosteve71 your post implies that people didnt vote for her because she was a woman and atheist. Not true. People didnt vote for her because of both the means she used to get into power, and then havign the Labor party tell us to 'get over it' come the next election.
@annata12 That's fine, and you can surely find out elsewhere. I'd opine that knowing what a state leader does believe in is equally important as knowing that s/he does not believe in utter illogical nonsense. In addition, in stating she does not believe in a god, she's courageously revealing an open honesty in her character that's severely lacking here in the US politcal arena where it's standard practice to be a phony & a liar -- and that's the overarching reason for posting this video.
@JesusSavesAtCitibank i was criticizing the interviewer, AS people especially religious people only hear atheist and think Stalin Hitler communist ;) So i would have wanted him to ask her more about her philosophy.
@Darusdei It really doesn't play a big deal. There is no radical religious groups like WBC. Some people might go to church on saturdays or sundays and pray. But there is no-one lining the streets trying to get people to change religions. Although people might identify with a specific religion something like 80% of religious people are non practicing. For example my mother says she is Catholic, but has never read the bible or been to chruch. We are known as one of the least religious nations.
Great news. However this have no effect on her competence as someone who is in power. Being an atheists have no bearing on whether you are competent or not, it just rule out religion brainwashing as a factor is all.
@Neosaigo Oh there you are wrong my friend, being an atheist statistically makes one more intelligent by a factor of 3-1 and even know the bible torah quran better by far than the so called ministers of said religions....so an atheist by the numbers is a lot better bet. I know my IQ is higher than any jesus freak I happen to know...
@jmlew you say that its sad the Governments are becoming secular and yet on another video you say you aren't Christian and so forth. Religion and Politics should never mix.
Apologies for the confusion. What I meant to say was that it's wonderful that the rest of the western world is embracing secularized governments. In fact that was the cornerstone of what made the U.S. such a great nation in the beginning. It's sad that the U.S. now is controlled by an overwhelming number of religious and greedy politicians, determined on parading their brand of religion and having the gov hold their hand. The U.S. has lost its way.
Religious and greedy don't go hand in hand? Bullshit. Is that the reason why the Vatican has the largest gold reserves in the world? Is that the reason why televangelists make millions while scamming people out of their money? Is that the reason why majority of religious politicians are for social security reform, privatized health care, giving tax cuts and benefits to the rich and ruling class of corporate elites. It's all a con-job, a charade, a hoax, no thanks to religious corruption
@jmlew I think you mean "thanks to religious corruption", but we'll let that slide. For every money-grubber you identify, I could show you missionaries bringing water, food, and medicine to third world countries and earning fifteen dollars per week, churches offering free meals to the homeless of inner cities, and people motivated by their faith advocating on behalf of human rights. You see what you want to see, and find fault where you expect to see it. It blinds you to all else.
@jmlew As advocates of "rational thought", don't you find it odd that there is such a rush to make blanket generalities? That's the result of lazy reasoning, and is the first step toward bigotry and discrimination. No one is arguing that the Church doesn't have warts. It is made up of fallible human beings, after all, and not everyone who claims the Name of Christ is really a Christian (read the parable of the sheep and the goats sometime).
@jmlew Anyway, I have no interest in getting into an argument. I only stated my opinion, and am going to leave it at that. I hope you all find peace and satisfaction in your lives, whatever form that may take. I also hope that we all can be willing to hear the other person out, respect their ideas, and not resort to name calling or ridicule. That seems to be the reasonable thing to do. Good night, all!
@amkaen If you had no interest in getting in an argument then you've asked the wrong old atheist to read your comments to jmlew....so. here we go. 1: Religions are built on a lie, engineered on a lie, live on lies, the whole tenet of the church is a lie...so bring on the peaceful ministers(servents) not employees BTW.) and their prayers for the original sinners., another torturous example of the heinous nature of the god y'all created in your goofy image.
@JstNEarthling I suggested you read my response to jmlew only to let you know that I was trying to respond to both your comments, not necessarily to solicit more debate. Perhaps I was wrong to comment at all. Believe what you wish, as we all will, and on each head be the consequences. I said what I said out of genuine concern for the welfare of others, whatever else you may believe. The ball is now in your court. Consider carefully how you play it. Good night, and God bless.
@jmlew Unfortunately you are right about my country, even or new black president has gone oreo republicrat on us and lied at least 20 times so far has not made an executive order to do away with DADT. He promised he would end the ilegal war in Iraq / Afghanistan and bring the boys home immediately...NOT!! he even surged the fucker!!! I'm done with it I'm now independent and they'd better have Ralph Nader or Bill Maher for president...
I've never associated with either side of the democratic or republican party. Both sides whisper sweet music in your ear and tell you a nice story, but in the end you realize it's all a con-game, a charade, a hoax, a laughing stock of a gov. The rich get richer through tax cuts and benefits, meanwhile the poor settle for scraps via low wages, less jobs, and many can't even afford health insurance to help themselves. The US doesn't give a shit about its citizens.
I can only hope that during my lifetime, the US learns to learn from other countries. In the US, although it's right in the Constitution that there is no religious test, somehow a defacto religious test has evolved--an atheist cannot be elected president.
Of course the religious would say that there is nothing in writing that says that, but the fact that there hasn't been a nonreligious politician since Lincoln is a testament to that. Religion an overwhelming majority of politicians under its whim and majority of the populace in central and southern states. Definitely keep your eyes peeling in the upcoming presidential election in 2012.
Why should this be an issue? I would be worried if she was religious like our lot in the UK and USA. That's what's worrying. She sounds intelligent, unlike the religious.
@Moppy1988 Oh! I didn't know she was against gay marriage! I hope the same thing is not true for abortion and euthanasia. I think on average, she is an open-minded and cool person. By comparison, Gillard to the president of the U.S. is like iPod to cassette deck. What do you think?
Awesome, Slowely stepping forward. The fact that it was not a big deal i think speaks volumes, I'm in melbourne and it really didn't come up during the election. which is the way it should be.
She soundslike a yes-puppet for the liberals to me, no matter , lets all gather around as she lays on her death-bed and hear all the anti- god stuff then !
@horsemad1670 The death-bed conversion of atheists is a myth. Richard Dawkins is planning on having a tape recorded switched on next to his death bed to dispell the myth in his case.
Even if it was true, it would just be evidence of religious belief being the delusory result of being afraid of death.
@mysterymediacorp Politics in Australia is definitely not like the USA. There is a long history of atheist or agnostic leaders, but nobody ever makes a point of it as it has nothing to do with their job.
@mysterymediacorp There was a new right wing American style political group for a while. They tried to go around making a big deal about religion...it didnt last long
Julia is not the first openly athiest PM, Whitlam is athiest, Hawke, Curtin, Chifley were agnostic. Its strange to compare US and Aust politics, a US congressman or senator would go out of their way to mention a deity or be seen attending a church but in Australian politics its very rarely mentioned even if the MP is religious. Its just not an issue here.
I'll probably be dead before there is an open atheist as President or anything higher than Congress(wo)man in the US. Sadly you still have to have love for the jesus to get elected in this country.
In my opinion, belief in supreme beings stems from a fear of the finality of death, fear of inclement weather destroying crops & wiping out tribe-members & a section of the brain which when stimulated, is suspected of providing humans with a feeling of euphoria, akin to "religious experience".
@ArteTuga2 Pity this has had no bearing since she has allowed chaplains into secular schools and even called them "Religious educators" who are allowed to address assemblies and run "Christian Children's Clubs" and prayer meetings. She has also allowed them complete and unrestricted access into classrooms. She might be an atheist but that doesn't stop her being a cynical and ethical politician.
She also refuses to abolish the reciting of the lord's prayer in parliament and refuses to even discuss the idea that churches should not be tax exempt.
@ProjectDecade "scientists tend to refrain from testing something so sensative"
Really? You honestly don't think scientists study love??? You don't think scientists have been studying chemical reactions and brain activity of people who claim to be in love? I'm quite sure they have and are still doing so!
@DanielHellerTv would that be the "loving god" who orders one to kill their daughter if she is not a virgin at her wedding day? The same loving god who orders one to mutilate their baby's penis as a covenant?? The same who if your daughter or a neighbor in your village commits adultry it is your duty to report them and gather stones to kill her and provide that evil no longer sits in your village.....that god???
You can't act, talk, live and work like a man and claim whole heartedly that you are a woman. Womens lib these days are as butch as a side kick of sundance!
Look at you all praising this Gillard joke. She is not only anti god, she is anti woman. Putting the first Female priminister on your porfolio when you don't believe in having kids, getting married and looking down at those women who do. She might as well have a penis cause she is certainly NOT a woman let alone a role model. Spread the reulpublican, athiest, womens lib propoganda all you like. There is something to be said about having belief in something and being proud of femenimity.
Being an atheist doesn't mean she's any good. She has increased funding to fundagelical church ministers to go INTO SCHOOLS so that they can preach to children/offer counselling in lieu of actual qualitifed counsellors, to all students on assembles and school events, attend student outings/camps, etc - not just the religious instruction classes that are offered. She may be an atheist, but we've had Christian PMs who respected our constitutionally guaranteed separation of church and state.
Ok. If there is no God how could anyone explain our existence? If we evolved, how did that "thing" that we evolved from appeared? What are we? How did we get here? What is life? What is Love?
@DanielHellerTv You should read up on the Miller–Urey experiment from the 1950's and abiogenesis. Scientists haven't been able to quite figure out how life may have started, but they have made progress. Just because they don't have an answer yet today does not mean they won't tomorrow. Also, you should not then jump to a conclusion that a god did it as you then run into an issue of having to explain how that god originated. Another issue is that saying a god did it is an arument of ignorance...
@DanielHellerTv ...An issue you may have is that you want answers to all these questions. What is more important to you: having an anwer that may well be wrong or having an answer that is likely correct? If you want the correct answer, then you need to be patient with getting your answer. Although, there are some reasonable answers already out there for your questions. You should look for naturalistic causes first, though.
@DanielHellerTv Why must you know, you're not a scientist and if you found out (you can if you study science, really) cough(membrane)ough) big bang cough cough....love is when you get a hard on over a girl / woman... are you really that stupid??
Thx. I never thought he was an idiot (should have left that out of my comment). I, in my blue ribbon liberal electorate, voted Greens in both houses, hope my senate vote counted for something at least...
A Pentecostal Church? He'd feel right at home in the House of Representatives with all the arms waving in the air and shouting and screaming in gibberish then. LOL.
@smpaudio Um Australia did not vote for her. We'll have to wait and see if she will actually get elected. I have my doubts but nothing to do with her Atheism but her policies
@smpaudio no one really blinks here including the religious factions. It was only noticed when she was sworn in and didnt place her hand on the bible but no big fuss was made. Shes been shes been around an eternity
@smpaudio our voting and electoral system doesn't mean she needs to be voted in we vote in a party and the head of that party becomes head of government not head of state we voted in the labour parties keving rudd in 07 but he got ousted due to some huge failures and his deputy julia gillard took office. no one cares here i have friends in over 7 different religious beliefs i am an athiest and i don't care that she is i don't like her policies. and both political parties are bastards
In the nordic countries all the prime ministers are atheists or atleast agnostic. I have yet to hear any of those prime ministers even mentioning god. It would actually be an issue if a prime minister were strongly influenced by faith. We did have a priest as a prime minister a while back in Norway but he, as most christians in Norway was very relativistic.
Yeah, omfg, a leader who doesent believe in god...
It's a disaster, let's burn her on a cross, right?
Oh wait, that's illegal, let's use our doctrine power and change the laws, and burn every atheist on Earth, welcome to the christian church.
And no one reply to this if you are gonna include words like "U are lost" or "I feel sorry for you" "satanic" <-- cuz i dont believe in god, so you cant call me satanic.
doesn't matter, shes a fucking bitch

horsemad1670 1 year ago
@horsemad1670 The death-bed conversion of atheists is a myth. Richard Dawkins is planning on having a tape recorded switched on next to his death bed to dispell the myth in his case.
Even if it was true, it would just be evidence of religious belief being the delusory result of being afraid of death.

Religion is a private matter and should be kept out of politics. Keep your faith or lack of it to yourselves.

@mattleroi in politics you can't keep your religion to yourself at least in the USA & most other modern countries
mysterymediacorp 1 year ago
@mysterymediacorp Australia isnt like most other countries.
mattleroi 1 year ago
@mysterymediacorp Politics in Australia is definitely not like the USA. There is a long history of atheist or agnostic leaders, but nobody ever makes a point of it as it has nothing to do with their job.
mattleroi 1 year ago
@mysterymediacorp how did her atheism become public ?
mysterymediacorp 1 year ago
@mysterymediacorp There was a new right wing American style political group for a while. They tried to go around making a big deal about religion...it didnt last long

I wish Canada could get an atheist PM.
A government should operate without the bias of a religious faith.
ansfrid 1 year ago 2
Julia is not the first openly athiest PM, Whitlam is athiest, Hawke, Curtin, Chifley were agnostic. Its strange to compare US and Aust politics, a US congressman or senator would go out of their way to mention a deity or be seen attending a church but in Australian politics its very rarely mentioned even if the MP is religious. Its just not an issue here.

She might as well have a penis cause she is certainly NOT a woman let alone a role model. Spread the reulpublican, athiest, womens lib propoganda all you like. There is something to be said about having belief in something and being proud of femenimity.

@Pugwash81 Oh shut up you stupid wanker before my 9 sisters come over and kick the livin' shit outta you.
JstNEarthling 10 months ago
Being an atheist doesn't mean she's any good. She has increased funding to fundagelical church ministers to go INTO SCHOOLS so that they can preach to children/offer counselling in lieu of actual qualitifed counsellors, to all students on assembles and school events, attend student outings/camps, etc - not just the religious instruction classes that are offered. She may be an atheist, but we've had Christian PMs who respected our constitutionally guaranteed separation of church and state.
Breadfan01 1 year ago
Ok. If there is no God how could anyone explain our existence? If we evolved, how did that "thing" that we evolved from appeared? What are we? How did we get here? What is life? What is Love?
DanielHellerTv 1 year ago
@DanielHellerTv You should read up on the Miller–Urey experiment from the 1950's and abiogenesis. Scientists haven't been able to quite figure out how life may have started, but they have made progress. Just because they don't have an answer yet today does not mean they won't tomorrow. Also, you should not then jump to a conclusion that a god did it as you then run into an issue of having to explain how that god originated. Another issue is that saying a god did it is an arument of ignorance...
lgbuzals 1 year ago
@DanielHellerTv ...An issue you may have is that you want answers to all these questions. What is more important to you: having an anwer that may well be wrong or having an answer that is likely correct? If you want the correct answer, then you need to be patient with getting your answer. Although, there are some reasonable answers already out there for your questions. You should look for naturalistic causes first, though.
lgbuzals 1 year ago
@DanielHellerTv Why must you know, you're not a scientist and if you found out (you can if you study science, really) cough(membrane)ough) big bang cough cough....love is when you get a hard on over a girl / woman... are you really that stupid??

In the nordic countries all the prime ministers are atheists or atleast agnostic. I have yet to hear any of those prime ministers even mentioning god.
