Gyro, when you were describing how implementing the text box system was a PITA, I was thinking how I'd implement it with DirectX. Does that make me weird?
Dark GDK for game developers has an excellent website that includes downloadable materials that use Microsoft Visual Studio Express 2008 C++ edition. The basic materials are free...and they have a game developer package that is available for a nominal fee. I just wish that I knew about this when I was working as a full time substitute teacher in Arizona.
Course Technology also produces excellent training materials too... They have books that teach game development and so much more. .Many of the books come with cd roms and downloadable material that are used in colleges and universities today. My first book that I purchased from them was Rbase 3.1 for DOS and it included the software. I purchased the book at Ferris State Universities bookstore located in Big Rapids, MI, and it was $50.00 in 1992 and was worth every penny.
I love your videos-straight to the point... other free programs are Microsoft Visual Express editions 2010, C+, C++, Visual Basic, Visual Web Developer, Visual Phone Developer Express. They include tutorials and Intellesense which helps you with programming syntax. Dreamspark is a program for students where they can get full versions of Microsoft Programs, Webspark is another program where you sign up and you get to use Visual Studio Professional with SQL Server for 3 years free.
thanks for the great videos! definitely subbed! am a designer/artist looking to start game development with unity 3, and i found this really helpful. :D
I have been learning c# , php and all of other languages for a while then i started to relise that i was going the wrong way so i bought a c++ book and for about a month i am still learning c++ and do you think for game development is that the right way to go ? Also i loved every one of your videos
Oh man while your advice was spot on I could not help myself lmao at some of the stuff you said/did thats some funny ass shit.
But really this guys advice is spot on follow it and you won't go far wrong! - There is no quick way into games development (unless ofc you use a "drag n drop" app to make a game but then you learn nothing) it will take time and effort on YOUR part!
Just saying I think your videos are great and really inspirational, a while back I started making a game with javascript and html5 using the canvas element to manipulate pictures on the canvas, but shortly lost interest in it and quit making it, now I am trying to recreate that idea with java and I think it's going to go quite well, maybe some day we will cross paths and i'll join your development team or something like that, cheers!
That was pretty good. I've sort of messed about with Gamemaker and RPGmaker, and found it cool. I wanted to start doing it for real, but had no idea how. Now i know how to get into it, and it's actually not as bad as i feared, i already know Visual Basic, PHP and SQL pretty well, so learning programming languages isn't so bad. Thanks for giving me some directions :D
im 16 i got started last year im sooo lost but i have a dream to make a MMORPG and i dont care how much work i need to do ill do it i love mmos ive played alot and i think i can do this there are a few consepts i dont fully understand yet but will people like you helping ill learn and make my MMORPG tyvm for the videos man!

I have C++ Programming From Problem Analysis to Program Design by D.S. Malik.
Is that a decent book to use or is there better ones? Ive had this book for a while so im not sure if I should get another one. Thanks to anyone who answers.
My first thoughts on this guy was ; What an idiot. But after watching some of his other videos from the "Adventures in Game Development" series and his "How to guide" I thought he might have some (very few) but never the less, some valid points. Funny thing: I still have not managed to find any completed projects of his... If anyone can point me to a video I would be most grateful.
Well done 3 part video actually... I particularly enjoyed how up front and straight forward you were. I think a lot of us go through the very pitfalls you described. I look forward to checking out your "Adventures in Game Development".
I guess I'm too stupid for this... The best thing I've been able to make is a C program that averages a number of integers input by the user. Of course, that's freaking stupid.
right now im working on a game and the strategies i use to keep my concept realistic is to put the word basic in every title thing i say wen it comes to the concept example: lets begin the planning stages of a basic space basted RTS. there will be basic factions that the player can choose from. there will also be basic resources like debris and meteors to create the a basic recourse system. and finally there will be basic ship classes each wih is own specific function to a fleet.ye its 2D
ama goner make an AMAZIN GAME it would have sords and dragons and am gonna fiht all the people and be the best becuas e am gonna have wings am gonna have special POWERS!!!!!!i might just do it next week
What math would i need to learn, and how would it implement programming, im up to trig right now, and im pretty good at java and when im done learning inheritence, and interfaces, im going to learn c++, and it looks kinda the same since i learned alot from java! (and im gunna improve my art skills :D)
I must say, although I'm not developing a video game but rather working with someone else to rewrite multiple bits a pieces of a game's engine and other aspects, you have given me some light on things that could make the process go a lot smoother. This has also led me to realize that as much as I though game design would be the suited career for me, it seems like I'll be enjoying it more as a hobby.
I'm like the opposite of "Xxstillavirgin69xX". I can probably program a basic 2d game and I like programming, But I have a hard time coming up with decent, playable ideas. Does that make me like Xxgetslaideveryweekend69xX? Hahahaha.
P.S. Nice video. It really shows realistic expectations for game development.
@pecololek Luckily, no. You don't necessarily need to be a programmer to be an artist and vice versa (I can't draw for shit). It definitely helps, but it's not a requirement.
@Visioniser Python has become a decent game programming language, and can also be used in future projects for scripting rather than the whole project in itself.
Thanks for the video. Great pointers. Im just getting started into programming and you probably saved me from looking like a douche at some point in the future, so just wanted to say thanks.
Hey Man ! this was a really inspiring video . im 16 and i want to learn game programming . i've started learning c++ . can u give a detailed approach on how to start .
I'd just like to say that you can ignore the ranters on your videos man ( *cough* calfaro5 *hack* ). It's hard to explain something to people without a few jumping up and taking offense to what you say. The fact is, they DON'T know what you've had to learn and figure out on your own and they are supposed to be watching the video to absorb the information you give them instead of complaining that your the teacher and their the student.
By the way, your vids are great. Keep up the good work!
I think having friends that are into game development would be awesome. Personally I have never met anyone who was in to programming or game development, except online, of course, which totally blows. I would be so much more motivated if I knew even one person who I could just hang out with and discuss programming and game development..
Hey, after watching your video, I've decided to put on hold learning about a graphics API and just master C++ first. One thing I'm wondering though is how am I going to create games like Tetrix or Space Invaders without a graphics API? Or did you mean I should make those games after I've mastered an API? In that case, how should I practice mastering C++?
@TheITApprentice You can use some WinAPI function and use the console as your graphics engine or use some graphics API like SDL. You always need some kind of library to do graphics output without it being a extreme pain in the ass. You can try following 3DBuzz turorials (watch?v=g4zspdjFZyU) from Level III, the first two are about C++ basics, the third about implementing a game in it.
@sl2mmer >.> It doesn't matter what age, it just matters if you have the time, commitment, and brains to do it. I'm guessing that if you have graduated college/highschool, you probably are trying to work to get a house, and if you are still in college, you may have time on the week-ends.(I'd suggest Sams Teach Yourself as a book)
@sl2mmer Hope that's a joke...Anyway, no you're not. That's actually when I really did START rather than just "talked." In fact, MANY game developers in game companies are in their late 20's through mid thirties...
You are a funny man..I loved your videos..though your style of humour is sarcastic but you do make a very important point..to be pragmatic..and practical in our approach..good job..looking forward for more such videos.
oh my gosh that game sounds super awesome!!11 :OOO I'll make a series of video responses to this one, maybe 15 or 20 on excatlzy how teh gaem will lookwhen its done!
I honestly was trying to get a team of friends together to make an rpg but with what i've been finding online lately I'm convinced that it would be best to work on some simple phone apps before we look at anything too robust (the worst word to use when programming).
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
I think your a idiot. In your videos you are basically saying "lol im a genuis and your not, buy a book and maybe if you live to be 105 you can develop games lol". by the way your youtube title should be,"suggestions to become a game developer". The only thing i got out your videos is... i think i forgot c,c++ programming thanks alot... i am now stupidedererer uhhuhhuhhhhh let go me fininsh writinging myy gammee.
@calfaro5 Cute. The goal of my video was to inspire and give intelligent, self-motivated people direction and enlighten idiots who think it's all about game maker and won't take much effort. You're basically telling me that I did my job... I'm flattered.
@GyroVorbis Hey! I like game maker, It was my very introduction to game making and it's a very good introduction for game development if you realy get into it and start scripting, Thers alot of extensions and I even made a fully functional 2d top down mmorp that alot of people enjoyed.
However I understand people look down on it and it's not a choice for someone who wants to make a serious game or even sell one, or move on to the labour market.
@J0nteH I used Game Maker. Still do, it's a lot more fun to make games with compared to C++ as you have all the hard stuff done for you. However, you'll find that the functions that were previously helping you will now become an obstacle, so you have to find cheap workarounds to get what you want. There's no doubt in my mind though that GM helped me understand key principles and techniques in programming which can be applied in any language.
@calfaro5 You might now c++.... "might" is the key word, i doubt you know any language in depth enough to program games just due to your reply buddy haha.
@GyroVorbis Good info man, im a senior at UTA in software engineering and thought about trying my hand at a basic game. I was doing the game idea as a "side project" like you state in the video, not sure if its the best side project but it will get my mind of the school ones when frustrated haha.
@calfaro5 Thing is, this guy probably has a life, and can't teach you every step of programming, which takes years to learn by yourself, let alone having to wait for someone to explain it, upload the next vid, and repeat. If you're not motivated enough to sit down, and read a book, and follow suggestions, then you're not motivated enough to be a programmer. It takes years, but it's a lot faster by reading a book.
I recommend that if you're a beginner, and you find some tasks too difficult and get discouraged, that you try making something simpler. Jumping and and trying to create the next MMO when you have very little programming experience is probably going to lead to frustration. Start out with PONG... it's simple, easy to do and you'll have something created and DONE rather quickly. Then you can move on to something like TETRIS, then PACMAN, then a MARIOS BROs clone etc... work your way up slowly.
dude...ur videos r the best on youtube of the starting of game programming and development....i was looking for these kind of videos and im happy i found ur videos...im a beginner in this stuff and i know its hard and alot of stuff to learn but im gonna work hard and do what u said...and ur advices are great.... and what websites are ur forum in ... and thanx alot...
Dev-c++ is ancient and outdated c++ IDE and you shouldnt recommend it to newbies because they dont know how to change the compiler that comes with it. Why is there no visual studio express in the list? Its free and if not the best, atleast one of the best IDEs out there.
hey man, im currently studying software engineering and management in sweden, but im really interested in game developing, we get to learn the java language. do u think java is an appropriate language for gamedevelopment?
well concept art is pretty important for fleshing out a project vision (and game design), agreed that timing release of concept art is important but doesn't mean you shouldn't have it!
You said in your later video's that you started when you where 14. Does that mean actually getting started with development or just learning about the basics and advancing on from their?
Me, I'm a person who wants to learn everything about something before I start it. I got it from my mom. So I was wondering if you just jumped right into it and started, or played it cool and did your homework.
hi, i have a great idea for a game which could make millions ;)! but dont know any about programming, so contact me if ýou wanna start a little project!
I was wondering, what would you recomend as a game for someone to make who is new to games design but is used to programming ? Spent the last few years studying software engineering in college and going on to do a masters in games development so I am a used to programming but want something for the summer to do that will prove useful. I was thinking something simple like checkers in C++ with OpenGL or something. What would you recomend ? :)
@striker181187 Personally, I would recommend doing a simple game with advanced features, like Space Invaders with lots of physics and animations. Checkers is, imo, good for advanced AI programmers, otherwise it wont benefit you. For me, the hardest part in moving on from programming to actual game programming was the physics - to make things collide! Also, practise on switching between animations and playing dynamic sound effects. Good luck!
I already have two or three friends who are waaaaaay better than me, and I just keep asking them for some help :P
Starting to learn C++, so, if you have any suggestions for C++ Forums, I would be hell of appreciated :P.
Don't think of me as a Language-Noob, though. I am pretty good at Pascal, and I didn't even complete 6 months since I've started programming, so, yay me :P
What you have currently (well, had...) displayed as far as enlightenment was a feat that I'm quite sure will leave a lasting impression has it has me... burning the creepiest, most nightmarish, fucked-up, rightfully over-exaggerated imitation of the symbol of ignorance, incompetence, and a blissful and unfortunately widely accepted individual it could give a shit about what it takes to obtain knowledge without the necessary motivation or passion. I apologise for the language...

I apologise for the language...
If you want to mess with game programming you shuld to this small list of things :
Pick a language (C++ is NO 1 but C# is good idea too);Learn basic Win32 (how to create windows ,nothing more is needed) ; Chose DirectX or OpenGL ( starting with tings like SDL is not a good idea , but u must read them in the future).Lear basic math , physics , Graphics , Sound , network AI etc . This is the basic after that you will now what to do in the future
hahahaha I told some friends of mine that I was doing a computer science minor and that I was learning c++. I told them I wanted to make a game after I learned enough and they proceeded to give me "ideas". It went a little something like xxstillavirgin69xx.
This really helped, I've always been more into the graphic artist department and my best friend has been more to programing. And we're trying to integrate our knowledge. After watching your video's I'm in the ball park of what to do. Thank you.
you're more mature and take things more serious, so eventually you'll learn most stuff faster without needing people pushing u, cuz u push urself to be best
at 25+ ur brain matures fully, so you'll have even a broader understanding of everything virtually and in real life
everything is dependant on "Man Hours", so start now, not later

P.S. I WATCHED ALL 3 VIDEOS BEFORE BEING COMPLETELY COMPETENT IN C++... EAT IT

you're 19? O.o
I'm 20, am I too old to start with game development?
sl2mmer 1 year ago
@sl2mmer >.> It doesn't matter what age, it just matters if you have the time, commitment, and brains to do it. I'm guessing that if you have graduated college/highschool, you probably are trying to work to get a house, and if you are still in college, you may have time on the week-ends.(I'd suggest Sams Teach Yourself as a book)
Salien1999 11 months ago
@sl2mmer Hope that's a joke...Anyway, no you're not. That's actually when I really did START rather than just "talked." In fact, MANY game developers in game companies are in their late 20's through mid thirties...

I honestly was trying to get a team of friends together to make an rpg but with what i've been finding online lately I'm convinced that it would be best to work on some simple phone apps before we look at anything too robust (the worst word to use when programming).

I think your a idiot. In your videos you are basically saying "lol im a genuis and your not, buy a book and maybe if you live to be 105 you can develop games lol". by the way your youtube title should be,"suggestions to become a game developer". The only thing i got out your videos is... i think i forgot c,c++ programming thanks alot... i am now stupidedererer uhhuhhuhhhhh let go me fininsh writinging myy gammee.
calfaro5 1 year ago

Now I realise this comment makes no sense..
J0nteH 10 months ago
@J0nteH I used Game Maker. Still do, it's a lot more fun to make games with compared to C++ as you have all the hard stuff done for you. However, you'll find that the functions that were previously helping you will now become an obstacle, so you have to find cheap workarounds to get what you want. There's no doubt in my mind though that GM helped me understand key principles and techniques in programming which can be applied in any language.
tehham 9 months ago
@GyroVorbis Thnx for the videos! im gonna watch your "adventures in game development series afeter this!
And maybe buy a c++ book!

Goal Completed! You do Inpsire people . thanks by the way , you gave me some more hope that I should continue Learning C# :)
predatortheme 9 months ago
@calfaro5 You might now c++.... "might" is the key word, i doubt you know any language in depth enough to program games just due to your reply buddy haha.
@GyroVorbis Good info man, im a senior at UTA in software engineering and thought about trying my hand at a basic game. I was doing the game idea as a "side project" like you state in the video, not sure if its the best side project but it will get my mind of the school ones when frustrated haha.

priris 1 year ago
@calfaro5 Thing is, this guy probably has a life, and can't teach you every step of programming, which takes years to learn by yourself, let alone having to wait for someone to explain it, upload the next vid, and repeat. If you're not motivated enough to sit down, and read a book, and follow suggestions, then you're not motivated enough to be a programmer. It takes years, but it's a lot faster by reading a book.

TheGoodChap 1 year ago
I recommend that if you're a beginner, and you find some tasks too difficult and get discouraged, that you try making something simpler. Jumping and and trying to create the next MMO when you have very little programming experience is probably going to lead to frustration. Start out with PONG... it's simple, easy to do and you'll have something created and DONE rather quickly. Then you can move on to something like TETRIS, then PACMAN, then a MARIOS BROs clone etc... work your way up slowly.

Dev-c++ is ancient and outdated c++ IDE and you shouldnt recommend it to newbies because they dont know how to change the compiler that comes with it. Why is there no visual studio express in the list? Its free and if not the best, atleast one of the best IDEs out there.

Hello,
I was wondering, what would you recomend as a game for someone to make who is new to games design but is used to programming ? Spent the last few years studying software engineering in college and going on to do a masters in games development so I am a used to programming but want something for the summer to do that will prove useful. I was thinking something simple like checkers in C++ with OpenGL or something. What would you recomend ? :)
Thanks for your time :)
striker181187 1 year ago
@striker181187 Personally, I would recommend doing a simple game with advanced features, like Space Invaders with lots of physics and animations. Checkers is, imo, good for advanced AI programmers, otherwise it wont benefit you. For me, the hardest part in moving on from programming to actual game programming was the physics - to make things collide! Also, practise on switching between animations and playing dynamic sound effects. Good luck!

Starting to learn C++, so, if you have any suggestions for C++ Forums, I would be hell of appreciated :P.
Don't think of me as a Language-Noob, though. I am pretty good at Pascal, and I didn't even complete 6 months since I've started programming, so, yay me :P
Good video, dude. Keep it up :)

Hell Im 15 and im just starting it. If your 18, the only way you can learn is to try.
TheBlueMnM 2 years ago
@TheBlueMnM thanks,...
Testingpointer1 2 years ago
its an advantage
you're more mature and take things more serious, so eventually you'll learn most stuff faster without needing people pushing u, cuz u push urself to be best
at 25+ ur brain matures fully, so you'll have even a broader understanding of everything virtually and in real life
everything is dependant on "Man Hours", so start now, not later
good luck
