What power art thou, Who from below, Hast made me rise, Unwillingly and slow, From beds of everlasting snow ! See'st thou not how stiff, And wondrous old, Far unfit to bear the bitter cold. I can scarcely move, Or draw my breath, I can scarcely move, Or draw my breath. Let me, let me, Let me, let me, Freeze again... Let me, let me, Freeze again to death !
Klaus was so before his time. We lost so many wonderful talent to AIDS. What this man might have done with his career and for us all had he lived. May he rest in peace!
incredible documentary on this incredibly genuine artistic man that took his audience into a place of artistic awe and "reval"................."he came from outter space!"
Young VOCALISTS take note and leave the homgenization factory!
I just found out about Klaus Nomi, and i wished i did not for i feel a great hole in my heart for knowing the world had someone like this only to lose him way before he was finished with his work. I am so so sad now.....
"[Nomi's] gaunt face and sunken eyes reveal the suffering of a dying man. However, at the moment Nomi sings the word “death”, his eyes widen, suddenly infused with vitality and defiance. Through sheer will, Nomi wrestles with the note, refusing to let it defeat him. At the end of this feat, the slight and dignified upward inflection of Nomi’s head indicates to the viewer that he has won."
I found this video to be so captivating that I wrote a research paper for college finals about Klaus Nomi's life, music, and his last stage performance.
I'm not sure why I have a strange obsession with this Nomi video, but I beleive it may have something with the music and vocals which stammer like a person who is truely freezing / suffering, combinded with the fact that Klaus knew AIDS was a death sentence, it's very poignant.
ach klaus, das du wie ich in dem kleinen immenstadt in bayern gelebt . it reminds me in the performance of freddie mercury in "i am going slighltly mad"...
It truly hurts to watch this. His performance is of incredible beauty and majesty, yet he was horribly ill and dying from AIDS and still giving his full measure in this performance. Just two months later, he would leave this mortal coil. Truly, if there is a Heaven, he is teaching the angels how to sing.
Magnifique Klaus Nomi, éblouissant jusqu'à la fin... Version live "outstanding". Je suis soufflé après avoir visionné ce clip. Beau souvenir d'un personnage inclassable des années 80. MERCI.
its kind of hard to enjoy the performance, when at the same time you feel bad knowing the serious physical pains he would be going through you can obviously tell hes giving his all
This is my first meeting with Klaus Nomi and I'm already in love. This song has such intensity, so much emotion and is so tearful and icy... You know he's singing right from his heart and soul... It's not everyday you can see and hear something like this. Incredibely beautiful and haunting, once-in-a-lifetime performance. Best Cold song ever!
@noramachado Thanks, I checked it and was very impressed and like both the versions. Only with Klaus I can almost feel the ice stabs... Anyway, both are unique and beautiful in their own way.
Absolutely astonishing!. Even if you compare to my contemporary favourite Andreas Scholl. Klaus Nomi had a razor clear voice and an outstanding and very rare talent. He chose his own way outside the established classical world, which just maybe is the core of his legacy. He could have been the greatest countertenor in our time, but he chose just to let us know that he where in fact that, and went on with so many other projects which he found important. This calls for our deep respect....
Brilliant! Genius. Avantgarde. And as for AnnaLavandula's comment about him not being recognized by everyone, i don't think everything great shoud be, especially something absolutely beyond. Also it wouldn't be fair to him to achieve popularity posthumously. Those who are supposed to hear and appreciate him, will.
Brilliant! Genius. Avantgarde. And as for AnnaLavandula's comment about him not being recognized by everyone, i don't think everything great shoud be, especially something absolutely beyond. True genius. The man was an artiste on many fronts and a visionary. It would be fascinating to see what he would have created, had his death not been so untimely.
Un personnage plus grand que nature. Je l'ai écouté la première fois en 1977 et je le revisite de temps à autre. Faut se remettre à l'époque des années 70 pour comprendre tout l'effet qu'il a eu dans le milieu musical. Un inclassable.
This is the first song I heard of Nomi, so I've been quite disappointed not finding his other work so impressive... As I understand, he's true love was opera, so he should just mix arias with his disturbing stage persona and that would certainly bring him masses of fans over time- but who knows what he would do if he only had time! That's exactly what runs through my mind when I watch him performing- our time is so limited....
MAGNIFIQUE LIVE. Il doit chanter pour les anges maintenant. BEAU MERCI MERCI.
at the time, aids was not understood, he was one of the earliest people of note to die from it. he had a rare voice, musically speaking he was a modal countertenor, which is something that almost never happens. i think his death was sad, but not a tragedy, he left those of us who appreciate him with a body of work we should all just enjoy for what it is.
why, why a person like Klaus had to die? this life isn´t fair. When he sang this, he maybe was so ill, his breath was difficult, but he was on the stage like a complet artist.
It is tremendous difficult to hold the original tempo which is a bit more fast than what Klaus Nomi does. Then, imagine the slower tempo held in his performance, it's even more hard... and you got to be good for doing that - incredible !!
Astonishing power in this performance and an extraordinary stage presence. Out of this world and quite unique, it seamlessly melds the music of the 17th century and the avant garde of the 1980s. I am totally mesmerised.
This is was one of the few times in history that you could sense the greatness of tragedy going on in that exact moment, and not only later when he passed away.
i saw him in german TV at first with "Total Eclips" from the first time i loved his voice and his strange look. Life is not fair. Maybe Good loved him also so much, so he take him to heaven so early. i love you Klaus.

The commentary of an artist through their art is an effective signature of the process in which they make and why.
This piece of entertainment should serve as notice to those who wish to become the greatest they believe themselves to be.
May an audience be present when you shall make and create a feeling as powerful as this.
