  • Hi Shawn,

I have been following your videos and have your DVD set. Ignore the idiots, yours is the best teaching I have found anywhere. Enough fawning, could you explain why I get a callous on the heel of my left hand (I'm a right handed golfer) even though I adopt exactly the grip you recommend? I try to keep the grip in my fingers and not across my palm but it must be moving in the swing. I'm considering getting my clubs regripped with something a bit larger.

  • @LloydNM Thanks Lloyd! If you go to the home page on my website, I have a full conversation with my European Teacher Edouard Montaz who had the same issue as you do! You will see the living room conversation we had on my blog; Shawn

  • This is great stuff. Great explanation of a proper grip.

  • I videotaped myself the other day I noticed that my right hand v points past my left shoulder and when I try and get the v's both pointing to the right a bit it feels very uncomfortable for my right hand... is this going to be normal until I get used to it? What is the bad thing with the v on the right hand pointing to left shoulder instead of right of ear/shoulder?

  • Hi, Shawn I have a double jointed thumb on my left hand I am right handed. Today I played golf . I was a mess shanking the ball.not connecting just poor shots. I had problems with my first knuckle on my little finger of the left hand,it's always swollen after playing;but today I changed my grip to a baseball grip and was making great contact, my drives were going just as I swung. My hands pushed against each other making the club and my hands as one really felt great. Better hing and firm hands

  • I wanted to say thank you, you make a video that is very easy to understand with all the different angles. I appreciate your videos.

  • Hey Shawn -

I've been using the interlocking grip for my golf game, and I'm thinking of switching to the ten finger. The interlocking grip has left my hands blistered and bleeding at times, and I've had to place tape on my fingers to avoid them from worsening. Are there any reasons why a ten finger grip will not be effective? Do you teach all three to your students?

  • @josephforte I hope you will consider using the overlap grip before the ten finger. If that doesn't work go buy some kind of tape to put on your fingers, put your glove on and use the interlock. .

  • Hi Shawn, I'm having a very hard time with my grip. My problem is that the club spins in my hands in my downswing. It rotates closed so much that if I return the club to address, the clubhead is as much as 90 degrees closed! I've read books, I've consulted with a golf pro, watched videos and you tube. I'm about ready to give up the game. I would appreciate it if you could tell me what I need to focus my attention on to make sure the grip doesn't spin in my hands. I'm at my wits end.

  • @jwsmith519 Tips for you. Try to weaken your grip to 2 or 2.5 knuckles. Also if you're a RH golfer have your R index finger and thumb almost off the club. Very weak. Its mainly those finger which close the face at impact too much. Also go to Hank Haneys website, register for free, and watch his video on curing a hook. Make sure to do that.

  • Shawn,

I just started my season. It was a pretty horrendous day. I came back to this video and my confidence is surely back. Everything in the swing really starts with the grip. Thx.

  • You're supposed to interlock your fingers?! Wow, I never knew that! :-) I think it's gonna take a while for me to get used to that.

  • Hey Shawn, quick question. Are your arms near locked out when at address, or is there a slight bend in your arms?

Thanks and keep up the great vids!

    Bobby

  • Hey Shawn, greetings from London, England!

I have a simple question related to the grip and that is, how much of the butt end of the shaft should be protruding from the lead hand, in other words how far up or down the shaft should you grip the club. I have heard some ppl say you should grip it with no slack left on the shaft and others say with 2 inch protruding toward the navel.

does it depend on club and shot type??

    Cheers,

    Gary

  • Hey Gary; great question!

Key here is to do what feels solid for you; some play better gripping down on everything like Anthony Kim and Nick Price and others will grip down depending on the shot like Tiger; as long as the grip does not shift or move during the motion and allows you to hinge and release fully! Shawn

  • @clemshaw

    Hi,

When i am playing golf my shots tend to start off straight however the ball then tends to dift to the right. Any reason why this might occur?

  • A while back I started gripping the left hand as you show and I felt solid and powerful but I had other swing troubles and reverted back suspecting it played a role in my ire. I'm sure now I was wrong and want to thank you for putting be back on this track. The left hand is getting back into that powerful position.

Your vids have been very helpful. That and targeted work on my short game have lower my index from 12 to 8.5 the past few months.

    Regards,

    Mark

  • Right on Jellomould! Let it gel! :)

    Shawn

  • Shawn, Watched your DVD and seen most of your youtube videos. I've noticed when doing the perpetual motion drill that my V in my right hand (I'm right handed) slowly becomes compromised because the muscles along the lifeline/thumb area get fatigued/sore from the left thumb pressing against it when gripping. What can I do to correct this so my right thumb area on the palm side doesn't get so fatigued?

    Thanks, David W.

  • Hey David; great question!

You want to feel that the underside of your index knuckle is supporting the club at the top of the swing; the thumb is there as a safeguard; see "golf pro lesson grip awareness" and "golf pro lesson weak grip or strong grip"; it took me a while to stretch the ligament in my left index finger for my left handed swing but now both are solid and secure so keep at it! Shawn

  • Is this the best grip for releasing the hands in the swing. Strangely I used to hit a draw without any effort, but just can't seem to do it any more.

  • Have a look at my "golf pro lesson weak grip or strong grip" video and you will understand, it just means that you club face-grip relationship is no longer dynamically closed;

    Shawn

  • Hi Shawn,

I bought your DVD as a complete beginner and then went to my local course for some lessons. The teacher there was encouaging me to bring my left hand (I am right handed) further over the grip to a "1'oclock" position (as I would look down the club shaft). What are your thoughts on that?

  • Hey David! Great question! See "golf pro lesson weak grip or strong grip" video for the answer; you will love it! Shawn

  • Thanks Shawn, I will try it out.

    Cheers,

    David.

  • This is more in the palm of the right hand than I have been doing. I have struggled in getting a secure and unified grip. My right thumb pad is too far away from my left thumb to be able to apply any pressure without feeling like I have to contort my right wrist. There has always been a gap between these two spots. This helps me get that pressure without feeling strange. Now my right fingers feel wrapped along way around my left thumb. Does anyone else feel like this? Any comments Shawn?

  • Have a look at my "golf pro lesson grip awareness" as well as my "golf pro lesson grip 2 wrist hinge" videos; it is a great addition to this one; Thanks for the comment!

    Shawn

  • hi Shawn, i have naturally clammy hands and they easily get moist and slippy during rounds or practice, resulting in not strking through confidently, i find it more of a problem with the new clubs i have bought (Wilson clubs) do you think i should get them re-gripped and if so what kind of grips would your recomment or is there any other solution to this?? Many thanks for everything Mark from Ireland

  • Buy cord grips

  • My Head Teacher, Paul Davies, has the same issue; it was discovered that it was the rubber compound in his rubber grips that caused his hands to sweat; now he plays with Win Grips and the hand sweat has gone down by 90%; just amazing; you should try on one of your clubs to see if it does the same for you; Shawn

  • i showed the pro this last time i had a lesson he told me this was a plam grip

  • You can call it whatever you want; it is "the grip" that connects "the bone" which is the club to the bones of the lower arm to make the arm-club unit a solid mesh from the shoulder sockets to the club head; see the other videos I quote in my response to "golf2903" ; Shawn

  • hi thanks i not changed this grip

  • Hey Shawn,

Big fan of ALL your videos. Very helpful. What golf grip would you recommend for someone with small hands? Also what is the purpose of hooking the right index finger rather than just wrapping it around?

  • Thanks very much! See my "golf pro lesson grip 2 wrist hinge" video and towards the end of the video you will see about grip pressure; also, see "Golf Pro Lesson how to choose your irons part 1 and 2" and in part 2 I talk about it as well; as far as the interlock or overlap grips, they are chosen as a complement to reuniting the hands as one piece on the grip; the "Golf pro lesson grip awareness" and "Golf pro Lesson weak grip or strong grip" are also great references; Thanks again! Shawn

  • great video thanks alot - just helped me straight away

  • This video actualy cured my slice (for the most part). I'm going to buy Shawn's DVD, for sure. Best golf instructional videos on youtube, easily!

  • Shawn: I just got your DVD and am very pleased. I have a problem with regripping the club resulting in closing the club face with duck hooks. Is it grip pressure issue or gaps in the grip?

    Steve L.

  • Hi Steve! Thanks and yes; I have just put out another video on this very subject called "Golf Pro Lesson Grip Awareness"

Check it out and please let me know how you do!

    Shawn

  • Hi Shawn, I was wondering...

How firmly should i grip the club with my bottom hand (right). And with an overlapping grip should the little finger just be resting on top of the top hand? Thanks

  • I talk about this towards the end of my other video on the grip which is called "Golf Pro Lesson Grip 2 wrist hinge" Have a look at it and let me know!

Thanks for the question and comment; Shawn

  • I have looked at a lot of videos on grip and that was the clearest explanation I have seen. Thank you

  • Hi Shawn,

Your videos have been a real eye opener for me as a golf novice. I do have a question about the right hand portion of the grip. I have long slender fingers. Until now, I have been using a "baseball" grip for the right hand (i.e. no overlap). Since everyone (including you) seems to say that the baseball grip is more for people with smaller hands, I've been experimenting with overlaps. So far, I've found that overlapping feels less solid than "baseball".

    Any comments?

    Thanks,

    Rick

  • Hey Rick! Great question which has a simple answer: Do not try to fix what is not broken!! :) I was merely making an observation to what I see on a day to day and there are many exceptions; so keep doing what you are doing especially if it respects the criteria in this video as well as the "Grip 2 wrist hinge" video...Shawn

  • Shawn - 2 questions about the left hand. The grip should be where the fingers join the hand, on the palm (hand) side or on the fingers side? Also, could you elaborate on what a light interlock is (as opposed to a full? interlock) ? Feel free to use much detail. Thank you

  • Shawn - is it fair to say that the palm of the right hand (for a right handed golfer) is effectively facing the target at address? Chris

  • Yes, you could say that; good with me as long as you feel the trigger finger properly hooked on the grip!

    Shawn

  • Shawn,

I just bought the AP2 with standard grip (Tour Velvet). I have noticed calluses on my right hand on the following fingers. First finger lower third pad and third finger first and second knuckle joint as well as first thumb joint. I have noticed my tendenitis is acting up. My right forearm is feeling pain too. I am also wearing heel pad on left glove. Do I need to look at new size grips?

I have been hitting alot of balls working on your tips. My hands sweat. Am I gripping club too hard?

  • Hi and thanks for the comment and question;

Swing the club back and through like the perpetual motion drill I show in my DVD or in the "Swing Plane" video; as you are swinging back and through, be aware of any changes in grip pressure and if you are letting go of the club at any given point; many don't realize that they let go of the club in 2 major areas: At the top of the backswing and just after the ball is hit about waist high on the follow through...

    Shawn

  • Dear Shawn, thanks for your reply, but is what I'm doing exceptable? I would not want to do anything you wouldn't do. My game seems to be going forward rapidly now so seeing the grip is of great importance I don't want to incorporate bad practice. PS your teaching looks good because it is good....regards Andrew

  • Dear shawn, I think I have a good grip recently I have ajusted it slightly by doing away with the overlap and using a baseball grip. I works ok for me as I have small hands, certainly feels powefull through the ball. The only nuance is the feeling of my right hand being lower on the grip ever so slightly pulling my right shoulder down a little. What do you think? PS 16 h/cap for 3 years, watched one leg swing, tilt and brace went out and shot 81 and 82 in comp two days in a row, Thanks Andrew

  • Yes Andrew! You are Bang On!

    The right shoulder goes down and back ever so slightly and the left shoulder goes up and forward ever so slightly;

Keep up the good work and make us look good!:)

    Shawn

  • Shawn,

So is the anatomical snuff box supposed to be on top of the grip/shaft? Kind of making a straight line down from your forearm to the shaft?

  • Yes, which means your thumb will be coming in from a 1:00 position with the tip of the thumb at 12:15; you can see "Grip 2 Wrist hinge" and "Arm Motion" videos to compliment this one; they are all on my website at shawnclementgolf dot com

    Thanks for your comment! Shawn

  • is there anything wrong with a 'short thumb' on your left hand?

  • Only if when you hinge, it cause the club to separate from the heel pad and creates movement or friction on the heel pad; you may have the short thumb working very well for you and if it does, do not try to fix what is not broken as they say! Shawn

  • You use a long left thumb with the shaft more straight up and down your fingers. I have seen others recommend a short left thumb and the shaft more diagonal in the fingers. Could you comment on the positives/negatives of each? (BTW: your explanation has made the most sense so far.)

  • Hey Rands; it is all about having the hands work together as a unit without falling apart or shifting on the club at crucial times like hitting out of heavy rough; Have a look at the "Grip 2 wrist hinge video" for more on this;

    Thanks for the comment; Shawn

  • I've always struggled with the grip and even though I've had lessons noone before has been able to explain it in such easy terms. Left hand - grip it like an umbrella and right hand on the life line. Fantastic. Many thanks

  • Hi Shawn,

For my irons, recently i tried focusing more on using my right hand/arm as the "feel" and power hand, that comes down like a hammer, and follows through the shot like a bowling motion (being right handed)... and that the left hand is a stiff and straight pendulum that maintains the full arc swing... and it has helped improved my shots! Is that the right sort of mentality? Or should it be a more "combined arm" mentality?

    thanks! Enjoy your vids :D

    M

  • if you hit it better of course its the right mentality!!!

  • Hello Shawn. I've got another question. It's about the wrist hinge. After the range whacking a 100. My left wrist seem to hurt if i try to roll it in circles. What does that mean or how does that effect my swing? Cheers mate in advance!!

  • Hi and thanks for your comment!

If you go to my site at shawnclementgolf dot com and to the You tube page where all 68 vids of mine are, check out the "Grip 2 wrist hinge" vid, the "Chicken wing across the line" vid and the "hamer throw" vid...the reason your wrist might hurt is that you are not clearing properly through the ball and the club is releasing too much around the wrist since the body is in the way...

    Shawn

  • great vid!

  • Cheers!!

  • Well done Shawn. Its a pleasure to watch your vids. Paul - UK
