Great stuff, more folk music-oriented ... The musicians that Vai talks about play is a style that blends Bulgarian folk music with Turkish chalgija, Gypsy brass band music, jazz, klezmer, rock, etc. Listen to ALL kinds of Balkan music that you can find if you want to get a feel for these melodies, scales, time signatures, embellishments, ornaments, etc ... but I think Vai is specifically referring to musicians like Ivo Papasov and Yuri Yunakov. Also check out Vlatko Stefanovski. Good luck!
