@ThePianoguy89 Actually Whitney did have formal training believe it or not at some point in her career. Her control over her head, superhead, and coloratura abilties is just unreal. Really there is no excuse for her vocals today besides touring so much in prime, substances, and just lately not practicing. We have to remember Whitney has not toured in the capacity in 2010 since 2000. From 2001-2009 she has been lazy vocally not performing and doing substances.

She can mix her notes super high thats why she will always be a soprano in tessiura. She sings in chest way too much being past 40 years old. She is not in her 20's anymore her chest voice is naturally more raspy.

@kmaur21 You are right. Her belts are strong because she uses her diaphragm as a source of her power. She belts in the mask, giving it that resonant sound. In sound live performances you can tell that it is pure chest voice and not mixed. You noticed that the Greatest Love of All studio version is always different from the live version. When she hit the D5 in the live of that song version it did not sound mixed at all, but it was still resonant and powerful.

@ThePianoguy89 Yep most her belts are in the mask, like all them for the most part live. There times she does mixed but her mixed tones are very high normally. Her belts in mask are extremely high even now. Like when she sung MLIYL NBL tour those belts at the end are all in mask. She should mix more now she older.

@ThePianoguy89 I also notice for the most part Whitney starts from head voice, and then goes into whistle, its her signature when she does it. It shows her vocal flexibility and honestly I think her voice in her prime was the most flexible able to do anything any given moment. Mariah starts a note at whistle forgeting head, but Whitney usually builds into whistle and predominates it with head voice like a opera singer. Only a few times Whitney hits a whistle note not that way.

Someone said that she was not mixing her belts properly allowing her to strain her voice. Her coloratura abilities is magnificent indeed, and her ability to transition from chest voice to head voice is amazing!

@ThePianoguy89 Well I think Whitney not mixing is her choosing cause back in early 80's her mixed tones were very apparent. In I Am Changing NYC where she hits D6 Eb6 Now I can see thats a mixed note, but most think it was head. She also mixes alot in NYC 1986 Jones NY concert. Her mix is very very high the Arsenal Hall performance of All the Man I Need He............. part is full mixed voice and she went higher during the rehearsal. Her chest voice is just extremely high powerful too.

@ThePianoguy89 Also Whitney really does not have to rely on mixed voice alot in her prime cause her chest alone was extremely high. Patti, and many other sopranos have to rely on mixed voice past D5 or E5, Whitney has belted way up in fifth octave to about A5 in chest alone comfortably. She can mixed even higher when she chooses. Now that she is older she should mix her notes much more. Women's chest voice get raspier when they age due to hormones. Thats why Whitney needs to mix the belts.
