  • Nice Boards of Canada tribute. And nice synth !

  • I don't really hear any glitching or slowing of notes in this demo... does that ever happen or does it just respond that smoothly to sysex? Where does the MIDI merging happen? Do you have all the parameters mapped or just a few?

  • @bluecoast1 - 1. Only a few parameters slow the matrix down, but most work fine as you can see. The M1000 may be a different story though. I dunno.

    2. The midi is merged in a merger.

    3. The drehbank has 64 knobs, so I've mapped 64 of the most useful parameters. Front panel of the matrix6 is used for the rest.

  • What a great melody to use!

  • @DJPeteJames i played a prophet 08 for the first time the other day and i thought it sounded a lot like the matrix-1000.

  • Yes.

  • Hi,

Did you have to pre define what each Drehbank controller would effect on the Matrix?

  • Nice boards of canada sound :D

  • is this boards of canada? nice!

  • I have one of these and want to unleash the power of this beast. Anybody knows if it would work with a behringer bcr 2000 (rotary controller)? I don't know much about SYSEX. Any leads or help are appreciated it. : )

  • @xorezx1

Yes, BCR2000 supports sending sysex with its rotary encoders.

  • This is a pretty cool boards of canada cover

  • olsen

  • it seems from this video that the matrix6r responds faster to sysex commands then the matrix1000.

    (amazing demo btw)

  • @0e0 Its true... I read somewhere that the 6r has a better buffer for handling incoming data...

  • @aredj I did so much research into possibly making an upgrade to the matrix-1000 to make it respond faster.and i couldn't find any options that don't require a redesign of the motherboard at that section.

I would love to see someone design some kind of upgrade kit or atleast find away to give more up to date response to those awesome CEM chips.

Although the limitations are cool cuz then I ended up designing patches that have to be "played" to get the expressiveness out. Instead of just tweaked

  • @DJPeteJames Yep, it sure does. Although the Matrix sounds "dirtier' to me. And the envelopes are slow as hell.

  • Nice work! I happen to own a Drehbank and a Matrix-6R as well. Got it working, but I can't figure out how to get negative values, such as param 01 freq mod by lfo1 which operates from -63 to +63. Have you found a solution to this?

  • Ok, by watching the video more carefully, looks like you made the trade off by not using negative values. I guess that's fine, since you can always edit them directly on the matrix6. Think I'll send an email to Doepfer and ask about this, if it's possible somehow.

  • Another thing... about the slow response on some parameters, like at 1:53, where you edit 01 DC1F/LF1. I think I have solved that problem... In the Drehbank editor "edit control" window, try changing the default sample delay of 10ms to 180ms, which seem close to the optimal for that parameter.

  • Hey... thats a good idea... I'll get that in there. Regarding the negative values - I originally figured out the values from using... uhhh, the OB6000 editor i think its called... even that program had some trouble doing negative values. Either way... to get negative values, I imagine you would either have to insert a specific sysex string in there, or another value all together. I didnt research to hard. That said, I decided it was simpler to reach over and press the negative button : p

  • Do you have a blog on how you did this? there are lots of us that are trying to do that with the BCR2000 due to the fact that the Drehbank has been discontinued for a while.

  • Excuse me, I've a question for you. The midi controller (Drehbank here) must be connected on midi in or in the Remote connector in front panel?

  • @baloccooo Well, if you read the manual, it will say that the remote port is not a midi port.

  • So, you use the mod-wheel set to filter because the sysex would be to slow otherwise? Please explain. Also, I can't seem to get the M1000X editor to work with my M6r in OSX... any tips?

  • Mod wheel is smooth. Sysex is not. (M6/1000)

re: m1000x - no tips never used it. try something else...

  • @TheMilford you have to create a device called "Matrix-6" in audiomidisetup of OSX and connecting in to your midi interface with the virtual wires

  • aain, fantastic demonstration

  • Super

  • Hi, thanks for the great clip. do you have to send a sysex command to the m6before you can access these parameters your tweaking?

    all the best

    cheers

  • You can... Software editors do this... all it does is put the matrix into 'quick edit' mode so it will receive external sysex commands.

Easy enough to do this from the front panel of the machine.

  • Love that Boards of Canada track. Nice demo!

I've avoided buying one because of the slow sysex, but this makes it look quite usable!

  • Yeah it works pretty good - I wouldnt use this live or anything, but patch programming is awesome.

Note that this behavior is not the same for the M1000

  • Is it worse or better for the M1000?

  • Worse...

  • Great video, this really inspired me to figure out how to program my Matrix with a nob box.

So I spent last night figuring out how to get this rolling. I'm using a Korg NanoKontrol and MidiQuest as my Sysex bridge (the 'learn' function is great).

Scene 1 runs the DCOs, VCO and LFO

    Scene 2 Envelopes

Scene 3 is VCA and Matrix.

Pretty slick! Software editors are only marginally better than the crappy interface on this synth. Now...to fix the junk power supply.....

  • I recently pulled the M6 keyboard out of storage - a seriously underated synth.

nice video - i'll be humming that riff all day now!

  • Theres several parameters that lag... but most respond ok... The matrix6 IS better than the m1000 for this.

  • thx

  • there seem to be no drop outs...? when I did sysex tweaking on my matrix 1000 I had drops all the time....

  • Very cool!

  • NICE! What are you using to control it? Some kind of MIDI controller, and that HUGE set of knobs, there? Do you need that many knobs to operate this thing, or can you just get one of the nicer modern MIDI controllers with a couple of the basics?? Thanks! NICE VIDEO!!

  • Hello , I've posted the demo on my blog switchedonsynthesizer.blogspot . com

Great way to program the Matrix :)

  • Nice Boards of Canada cover!

  • yup :-)

    Olson ftw

  • Dude, do you use a software editor for your Oberheim Matrix 6? If so which one?

  • I used an editor only to sniff the midi parameters - and then program that to the drehbank.

In short, no. I edit the matrix using the method shown in the vid. A variety of software editors are available online. Google!

  • man I am having a pain in th butt trying to get my microkorg to work as a controller for this..how did you get the drehbank knobs to control the matrix-6r parameters? what is this "sniff"-ing?

  • The microkorg is not a midi controller.

Not all knobs are created equal.

  • oh , I see, is it hard to assign a midi controllers parameters to alter the 6r? where did you get the info or howd you do it.. this synth rocks btw!

  • Where to get info? Internet!

You need a midi controller that can be programmed to do system exclusive messages. (sysex) - Learn about that. Its all a part of midi. (or just use a software editor for the matrix)

    Good luck.

  • sysex only

  • Hello, does it use midi CC or midi sysex for modulate the parameters ? thanx

  • Thats right. it is behaving the way its meant to... its not a stereo machine...

It only plays out left channel in patch mode...

The other output is for split mode.

  • Ok, thanks!

  • Hi! My 6R plays only left channel in Patch mode, but in Split plays both left and right/ Maybe you can help me? Thank you!

  • omg boc <3 olson<3

  • The Oberheim Matrix 6 is the sound I hear in a lot of Melodic electronica out there. Would be nice to have a multi sample library of this synth. Awesome!

  • ebay - oberheim matrix...

Sample cd's all over the place...

  • that sequence sounds awfully familiar... is that BOC?

  • yup

  • Hi, Is it possible to store presets on the Drehbank? To be able to use it for various synths?

  • yes... and a later version of the drehbank allows for 4 sets I believe.. mine is the first ver and has only 2... sending different sets from computer is simple tho...

  • That sounds like the synth line from a boards of canada song.

  • nice to see how diect the matrix respondes to sysex messages. i often heard ists a rather slow and not very direct thing to control it via external midi box...

not really tweaking fun. but it looks quite allright.

guess more than one parameter at the time wouldnt be that direct anay more?

  • Some parameters are quick, and a few are slow...

But allaround slow. Stepping on every parameter if you go quick...

This is not a tweakers synth... It's a programmers synth - a patch player. But this way, custom patches come easy.

  • cool demo

    thanks

  • Great, been meaning to do this for a while. What's interesting is that on the front of the 6r is a din programmer port (not midi). Don't believe oberheim ever released a device compatible with it though.
