Animals don't exploit other animals, horde them in factory farms, abuse them and sell them to other animals. They take what they need to survive, and humans don't need meat to survive. And no, their existence is not "for human consumption" - it's an egotistical assumption that we have a natural right to dominate, destroy and exploit life on the planet.

@isaschloegl If other animals had the ability to exploit other animals, they would. Ants already do with aphids, for example. And I highly doubt lions care for the wellbeing of antelope.

As for existing for human consumption, I'm not saying it's something innate in all animals to be eaten. But the animals most people eat (domestic cows, pigs, chickens, etc.) are specifically bred for consumption; if people stop eating meat, these animals would literally go extinct.

Massive population growth means that today we are producing millions of cattle under inhumane, intensive conditions specifically for mass consumption. Intensive land use for cattle lead to environmental and world hunger issues - 70% of the world's grain goes to fuel the Meat Machine. Eating meat contributes to so many problems it seems, in my opinion, that there is no ethical justification for it.

@isaschloegl That much we can agree on; the factory farming system and the quantity over quality status quo is something that can and should be improved. A lot of people eat meat for the sake of eating meat. We've bred out the flavor.

And as much as I'd like it if the grain for meat just went to hungry people instead, if we removed the meat industry, grain production would just plummet too from lack of profitable demand. Your gripe here should be with capitalism, not the meat industry.

Grain production might actually stabilize to relatively normal levels if it wasn't needed to feed billions of cows, pigs, chickens bred for slaughter every year. "Removing" the meat industry would cause many economic problems, but it's creating billions in healthcare (heart disease, food-bourne illness) and environmental costs (disposing of millions of gallons of animal waste). Where is the tradeoff?

It's not capitalism. People eat meat out of basic human greed, laziness and ignorance. As for drinking/smoking, it's not a black and white issue. Like with most things, you have to do it responsibly. If people want to smoke or drink, I have no problem with it as long as it doesn't hurt others. Black/white solutions do not solve problems that aren't black and white.

Compared to how other omnivores or carnivores treat their pray I'd say cows should prefer humans to other animals. And isn't it better to have lived at all? Maybe not in some cases but most meat production is not that bad.

Eating free range meat does not does not "help" the animals. They are still cruelly branded with hot iron, have their testicles ripped out without pain removers, and are generally deprived of proper vet care.

The animals aren't living "good" lives and there is no USDA definition of free-range... so technically, if you had twenty cows in your backyard, you could say they were free-range on the packet of meat.
