Why put the food under the plastic??I have been feeding Squirrels for 15 years or so.I have 5 feeding stations set up in my yard.I really recommend the "Squirrel Snacker" wooden self serve feeders that you can purchase at Wal-mart.The Squirrels can lift the lid,and get their peanuts.Simple, and the feeders are made of wood,so there is no issue of toxic materials like plastic or foam to deal with.
@Skwerrlly - It's *not* toxic - they don't eat the foam or the plastic, they're just tearing it apart to get to the food inside of it. I've also been feeding squirrels for 20 years, and I've been doing this feeder for 14 of them. The concept behind the bag feeder is as an enrichment project - it's *supposed* to be a challenge for them, to see just how determined they are to get the food out of it. We have many easy to access feeding stations in the yard also, they just aren't in this video.
Watching these vids I am still stumped as to just what you make those 'cushions' with....besides plastic and the peanuts...and how in the world did the squirrels figure out there was food INSIDE? Are there small cuts in it or do they make all of those holes themselves? These are such fun to watch! Gotta wonder if the little guy ever gets full!LOL
Oops! Just saw the 'more' part and that answered some of those questions I just asked......duh! *learning to look before she speaks!* LOL What fun to watch! Wearing a piece of foam on it's nose was hilarious....plastic belt too!haha Lotta work for you...thanks for sharing! *smiles*
Sure! :) I *really really* should make a making-of video for my project that shows everything from making the Feeder mats to hooking everything up, taping, editing, etc... The way I make the Feeders, I have a small foam cutout with slits in the top of it where I put different kinds of food. Sometimes they miss the food in the holes, sometimes they find *everything* - it depends on how desperate they are for nuts! :)

This was shot in May, so I think it's winter coat's probably shed off already - maybe it's a breeding thing?
