@thisweekinlinux Yeah but the same people were saying the same thing not long ago, specifically about fglrx. Being a *nix user, I live by the mantra 'results may vary' but I get the distinct impression that the power of suggestion is getting the better of people, especially since tearing is something that comes and goes on a day-by-day basis, depending on timing, load and the video source. Bridgeman says it might be fixed, people watch one video, then stop paying attention and proclaim it fixed.
Jordan . Unified Package install sounds like a great Idea. However wasn't this concept already tried by The Now Defunct company Know as Linspire? That used a Method Called Click n Run. Where all some one had to do was look for a program I;E Kino, Python, or any others soft war programs for a verity of Linux distros . Then all the user had to do is locate the Distro on Linspires List then zing That person got a new program loaded onto his computers Hard.
@Freespire44 well, this wouldn't be a unified packaging system, just a unified installer (so it looks the same across all distros using it, but uses the existing packaging framework to install).
Wow, calling yourself out at the start of the video was great to see. If only others in the media were as diligent about correcting their mistakes. Others, will spend 10 minutes on a false news story bashing somebody but their retraction will be as minimal and invisible as possible. You on the other had put it up front and explained, in detail, what was wrong about the previous story. Well done Jordan. Respect +10 :)
I think it' a very good idea to change the naming convention for network-devices, right now it's just a mess. From what I've heard this is mainly intended for sysadmins and servers with multiple networkcards. lwn.net/Articles/424859/
I think the Unified Application idea is brilliant. Actually I had thought up the same idea for games specifically, but doing it for all programs would be great! Unfortunately, one of Linux's strengths is also one of it's weaknesses: it's freedom has kept a standard from being established for all distros, and so programmers don't want to program for 12 different file types rather than 1 or 2. Hopefully this unified approach will make developing for Linux seem less risky/daunting.
Why are they fixing something that is not broken? New naming is kind of stupid. What would happen if you had PCI music card in slot 1, and Ethernet in slot 2... and you decide to swap them? As far as nVidia drivers are concerned, I tried installing them but they kept crashing my Compiz so am waiting for a bit. :)
Hackers would hack sourceforge to get password lists, email addresses, names, personal information etc. to help them hack other servers. They also could infect binary releases to distribute backdoors to thousands or tens of thousands of computers to allow them to do DDoS attacks, install key loggers to steal more sensitive passwords, or to use the computers for spam email relays. I doubt they care at all about the source code itself which is mostly freely available already.
hey mate, that was one of your most interesting news videos you have done, like it and love it,but as with the rest of us time is the problem,as you would have liked to put more in there i feel, but hey.....nice................proper job........
I think, that they make Linux easier to use is great. Ubuntu made this big jump with the Software-Center, but if the german developers make it better and OPENSOURCE, then there won't be a big gap between the millionaire company and the small but powerful hacker community.
At 10:04 you mention they still have the button at the bottom right corner of each window, and have added an area around the whole window to resize. This is incorrect. The area around the window has always been there, and they have added the resize button in the bottom right corner to make it easier to resize windows. Some people (me included) have difficulty grabbing that little area around each window to resize them. Otherwise, great video. :)
Just want to say I really like this show. I appriciate someone that has alot of knowladge in the open source / gnu/ linux community compacting and presenting all the work that is done by the community. As far as the one unified repository, I dont think it would be a good idea. It seem like having one point would facilitate attacks and distribution of bad code to masses. On the other hand the bios naming of devices you spoke about sounds like a good side to standardization.
@Tununias I have 1.5 megabits per second upload speed and 20 megabits per second down, so this video, which was about 950megabytes, took about an hour and a half.
the idea of only one super-repository for all distros is one of the best ideas that could be done to enhace linux, it would unify all those distros everywhere, if you mix that repository in a rolling release distro you'll be having without doubt the best linux distro, maybe good enough to become the linux representant
@fighterpiolt1992 probably not. the person who defaced my site was just a script kiddie. the person who attacked Fedora knew enough to change SSH keys and make his way in that way, but didn't know enough to keep it from emailing the profile owner. :P
I'm dubious on Fedora's claims that no changes were pushed, but we'll see. I'm often critical of Linux, not because I'm a troll, but because I want to to improve and not stagnate like it's been doing. In both the Fedora and Canonical hacks, the sysadmins used weak passwords, which should be a lesson to everyone that even on Linux/Unix, you have to remain vigilant. Unfortunately, some in the community believe in the InherentlySecure™ myth. Remember, security is a verb.
the idea of replacing ethX to other things is a good idea to categorize stuff but honestly how many ethernet ports is 1 computer going to have that isn't a server? typically the most you'll ever see on the average computer is 2, and both of them would probably be the same type (whether they're integrated or on pci cards) where categorizing them doesn't do anything.
overall i think the idea isn't worth it, because theres probably a lot of programs out there that only look for "eth"
Hm looks like Ubuntu do make some improvents, the drag area around the windows have always been too small, that is something i like is being fixed. :)
Hmm a unified installer would have key benefits and key downsides..
On the upside it would enable everyone to install like every program out there.. But it how I see it it would make all distros more vulnerable for viruses etc.. or am I missing something here?
@woutervddn well, it's not exactly a unified packaging system, it's a unified installer, so everyone would get the same look and feel when installing software, but each distro would use the packaging system they already have. I say YES to unified packages! A big reason why Linux is so hard to learn for newcomers is because it lacks consistency in terms of software installation. You got .deb installers, .rpm installers and so on. And then you also need to select if you are using a 64-bit or 32-bit version.

@gizm0do added a light to the background in the last news video. In this one I was trying out a setting on the camera that makes things "cinematic". not sure if I like it or not.
@3:50 Open Source IS getting a bigger Target!! Microslut already is shittin their Pants!!!! But whatever hapends.. whatever services and projects are been attacked.... KEEP ON WORKING HACKERS (Opensource Coders) !!!!! KEEP UP THE EXCELENT WORK AND KEEP UP SHARING YOUR CODE!! THE WORLD IS CHANGING ALREADY THANKS TO OPEN-SOURCE SOFTWARE!
@joe14jt There's a whole series on the channel about editing using Kdenlive. It's what I use 100%, and I highly recommend it. Just make sure you've got version 0.7.8. Much more stable than the older versions.
Arch is a very minimal distribution with the goal of keeping things "simple", and providing up-to-date software with a rolling release schedule.
no changes in 2.6.38 eh??? i thought BKL was supposed to be gone by then (actually, originally it was going to be removed in 2.6.37. but that seems to not have happened, being as i am using 2.6.37 - that i compiled). I would say that if the BKL code is fully gone in 2.6.38. then that is a huge change. particularily, for anyone planning on using RT_PREEMPT, or a low-latency system.
..and lets not forget cgroups/rtcgoups actually being implemented both in kernel & by some distros...
@thisweekinlinux my bad. I wasn't playing close enough attention to the "rc1 to rc2" bit.
Not that there are usually too many features added during the rc - cycle. Generally speaking, the most significant changes roll with the version. rc's are just ironing out the kinks.
@triplesquarednine :) not a problem. You're absolutely right, there's a feature freeze going on, just wanted to let people know the kernel's inching closer to release. exciting! :)
for appstream, when i first heard of it i thought it would be a whole new package (like .deb and .rpm such), but now i understand...thanx! anyway, i think it a good idea...make it smooth and streamlined for all distros...just offer choice and customization for those who want it lol...
Interesting to see that Unity in Natty will feature a Compiz plugin for Aero Snap. I say this mostly because its competitor GNOME Shell has already had Aero Snap in it for a while now. I see the two interfaces trading ideas back and forth.
@WarriorIng64 They aren't "trading" back and fourth. The head developer of gnome recently posted how pissed off he was that Ubuntu stole much of Gnome-shell for Unity - and that this is sort of a parting of ways, now that unity will be the default in Ubuntu. Mark Shuttleworth/Canonical tried to play it down, like it's not the case (only because Unity is heavily dependent on gnome) Basically i think gnome-shell sucks (because of mutter).
and Unity is mostly just a clone with compiz (over mutter)
@triplesquarednine How are they not trading back and forth? A lot of people noticed a big similarity to Unity when GNOME Shell released its "relayout" branch. And on the contrary, I don't think Mutter sucks. I've been keeping up with the latest builds in git, and while it was sub-par at first, they've made noticeably huge performance improvements in the meantime. It's now faster than Compiz. For somebody who doesn't need a ton of flashy special effects, it's actually quite pleasant to use.
@WarriorIng64 I know they trading back and fourth, as i said go read the gnome blog - they are pissed off.
also, i have both unity/compiz and gnome-shell/mutter(git).... compiz is WAY FASTER than Mutter, not even close. - there is also way more control, i had to hack at mutter to speed it up (b4 compiling it) compiz i just go into ccsm and i can make it as fast as i want it to be. Mutter also doesn't use hardware acceleration as well as compiz (gaussion blur, etc). Gn-sh is too little to late
@triplesquarednine GNOME Shell works quickly on my machines, and gives me significantly better battery life on my laptop. Besides, it's the interface itself that counts, not the flashy stuff. I could honestly care less what type of blurring it uses.
I can't find that blog post you keep mentioning. At any rate, I don't think the developers of an open-source project can get too mad if they allow others to produce alternative versions of their code and re-distribute it, and someone actually does.
@WarriorIng64 You are correct, it is the interface that counts, but my example was geared towards - utilizing my GPU over my CPU for graphics - which clearly mutter doesn't do a good job of (yet?). and not wasting CPU when my GPU will do a better job. it's like not using VDPAU (nvidia) acceleration for video, but instead you waste 30-50% of your CPU to watch HD? (when you could be using only 5%cpu)
i also have a gesture-based desktop (which compiz enhances with functionality)
Interesting Ubuntu news. If the stability issues I was having with it are resolved I might have to switch back. I like the new network hardware naming scheme, it sounds like a good idea.
I have kind of mixed feelings about Drupal 7. It's a Great CMS but I could't synch it with phpbb3, for drupal 6 there is a mod that is supposed to do that but I couldn't get it to work properly.
What I ended up doing was instaling punbb (very nice and simple forums) and writing the home/news page myself using some code I found in punbb wiki and it was actually easier than trying to get phpbb3 to synchronize properly.
a unified software center would be awesome. it definitely be a nice answer to the format fragmentation issue that puts off a lot of devs. I would love to see it implemented
You mean cracked not hacked! And it is amazing how many GNU/Linux sites are being attacked; BackTrack, GNU, Fedora, SourceForge... People are just evil.
@TheSushiDude for someone correcting someone else on hacker terminology I would have thought that you would assume this cracking is for the best, it helps ensure the servers are more secure.
I always enjoy watching your videos when i am feeling down, they always cheer me right up when I am stressed, keep up the good work, and keep the videos coming.
@samfoypainter for my day job I use C# and ASP.NET (though it's mostly html/css stuff with a little C# thrown in). Personally, when I have time, I love to code in Python.
In school I learned quite a few languages, but I haven't had use for most of them.
@thisweekinlinux Unified Package Install.. not bad but we keep forgetting that we have something similar that everything is based on... source code! How do you change HAL to udev?
If I suck at programming and barely scraped with it through college , any advice on how to improve my coding/algorithm skills ? (not looking forward to be a coder but it's necessary everywhere)

Hey!
You are making great videos!
I'd like too see one video named "how to: videoediting in linux" - which programs to use, ....
I use ubuntu as my secondary os for quite some years now and i would like to know why you prefer arch over ubuntu? Which are Arch's strong points?
joe14jt 1 year ago

I would say that if the BKL code is fully gone in 2.6.38. then that is a huge change. particularily, for anyone planning on using RT_PREEMPT, or a low-latency system.
..and lets not forget cgroups/rtcgoups actually being implemented both in kernel & by some distros...
triplesquarednine 1 year ago
@triplesquarednine no changes from RC1 to RC2. We talked about RC1 and all the changes last week, I believe. (possibly 2 weeks ago)
thisweekinlinux 1 year ago
@thisweekinlinux my bad. I wasn't playing close enough attention to the "rc1 to rc2" bit.
Not that there are usually too many features added during the rc - cycle. Generally speaking, the most significant changes roll with the version. rc's are just ironing out the kinks.
Ps: great show, i plan to catch it from now on.
triplesquarednine 1 year ago
@triplesquarednine :) not a problem. You're absolutely right, there's a feature freeze going on, just wanted to let people know the kernel's inching closer to release. exciting! :)

omg, im sorry for double post, but prediction: microsoft will say the "aero snap" is patented or some crap like that :P
archlinuxrussian 1 year ago
@archlinuxrussian that's no big deal. Apple patented a feature in Compiz, way after it had already been in use.
What worries me, is the attachmate (Microsoft/apple/and a few others) purchasing all of the Novell stuff...
triplesquarednine 1 year ago
for appstream, when i first heard of it i thought it would be a whole new package (like .deb and .rpm such), but now i understand...thanx! anyway, i think it a good idea...make it smooth and streamlined for all distros...just offer choice and customization for those who want it lol...

Interesting to see that Unity in Natty will feature a Compiz plugin for Aero Snap. I say this mostly because its competitor GNOME Shell has already had Aero Snap in it for a while now. I see the two interfaces trading ideas back and forth.
WarriorIng64 1 year ago
@WarriorIng64 They aren't "trading" back and fourth. The head developer of gnome recently posted how pissed off he was that Ubuntu stole much of Gnome-shell for Unity - and that this is sort of a parting of ways, now that unity will be the default in Ubuntu. Mark Shuttleworth/Canonical tried to play it down, like it's not the case (only because Unity is heavily dependent on gnome) Basically i think gnome-shell sucks (because of mutter).
and Unity is mostly just a clone with compiz (over mutter)
triplesquarednine 1 year ago
@triplesquarednine How are they not trading back and forth? A lot of people noticed a big similarity to Unity when GNOME Shell released its "relayout" branch. And on the contrary, I don't think Mutter sucks. I've been keeping up with the latest builds in git, and while it was sub-par at first, they've made noticeably huge performance improvements in the meantime. It's now faster than Compiz. For somebody who doesn't need a ton of flashy special effects, it's actually quite pleasant to use.
WarriorIng64 1 year ago
@WarriorIng64 I know they trading back and fourth, as i said go read the gnome blog - they are pissed off.
also, i have both unity/compiz and gnome-shell/mutter(git).... compiz is WAY FASTER than Mutter, not even close. - there is also way more control, i had to hack at mutter to speed it up (b4 compiling it) compiz i just go into ccsm and i can make it as fast as i want it to be. Mutter also doesn't use hardware acceleration as well as compiz (gaussion blur, etc). Gn-sh is too little to late
triplesquarednine 1 year ago
@triplesquarednine GNOME Shell works quickly on my machines, and gives me significantly better battery life on my laptop. Besides, it's the interface itself that counts, not the flashy stuff. I could honestly care less what type of blurring it uses.
I can't find that blog post you keep mentioning. At any rate, I don't think the developers of an open-source project can get too mad if they allow others to produce alternative versions of their code and re-distribute it, and someone actually does.
WarriorIng64 1 year ago

0frecel0 1 year ago
@0frecel0 that's the one big issue I've found with Drupal7, the majority of modules are still early in development for it.
thisweekinlinux 1 year ago
I'm not sure what to think about the proposed naming conventions fedora are looking at.
swathepocalypse 1 year ago
@swathepocalypse I think it might be a bad idea at first, because everyone's used to eth0 and wlan0, but it shouldn't take long to get used to it.

@TheSushiDude for someone correcting someone else on hacker terminology I would have thought that you would assume this cracking is for the best, it helps ensure the servers are more secure.

Hey, random question, what languages do you code in? Not really sure why I am asking this here or what prompted it.
samfoypainter 1 year ago
@samfoypainter for my day job I use C# and ASP.NET (though it's mostly html/css stuff with a little C# thrown in). Personally, when I have time, I love to code in Python.
In school I learned quite a few languages, but I haven't had use for most of them.

@thisweekinlinux Unified Package Install.. not bad but we keep forgetting that we have something similar that everything is based on... source code! How do you change HAL to udev?
TheSniperofDeath 1 year ago
@TheSniperofDeath if it turns out well, the SuSE build service should make all of this unified stuff a lot easier.
As far as changing HAL to udev/upower/devicekit stuff, I don't have a clue, but I see most of the distros are doing it now.
