Originally Hugh Jackman was going to be Phantom but he was already filming other movies. I like Gerard but I think Hugh would've have been better and make a difference for the movie's reception. But I still like the movie anyway. It's Phantom of the Opera and I'll pretty much like it no matter what!

I love how his voice doesn't have that completely classic operatic sound, there are times when he sounds a teensy bit more like a contemporary singer. Plus he's, like, such a babe...

When I first viewed this I initially thought the same thing, but this is only a short snippet. The whole performance was so moving and intense. The way this guy sings Music of The Night (I've never heard Michael Crawford sing it) is telling Christine what the power of music can do to you.

@SunburntComposer You've never heard Crawford sing this? It's by far THE best rendition ever and the official promotional video he made with Sarah Brightman is available on YT. The way he "dances" the song is amazing and is the standard by which other Phantoms are measured. Listen and post your reaction.

@audiesgirl I'm sad that I HAVE heard Crawford sing it. I'm afraid I just don't see what you guys see at ALL. He certainly isn't the Phantom IMO. I see the excellent acting that he has and the emotion in his voice but his singing voice kills it all for me. It's a musical - and at points a complicated one as well - so it needs the voice to match. JOJ and Ramin are what I mean. They are fabulous.

@Monkeyballmania Well that's the point of Crawford's voice. It's not supposed to sound perfect in terms of technical skill like what you'd expect in say, an opera singer. But it is supposed to bring across the pain and character of the physically and emotionally deformed Phantom, which it does brilliantly unlike any 'straight' voice. The creepy edge in his voice is what defines his Phantom.

@PrincessSolitaire I don't know, Ramin always comes across as pretty humble and modest in his interviews and is constantly talking about improving and learning his 'craft' so I don't get the sense that he's in love with his own voice at all. He's immensely respectful of other performers, and pays a lovely tribute to Michael Crawford in the finale to this. And I would be amazed if anyone could watch the whole DVD and still think that for Ramin it isn't about the words and feelings too.

The deformed lips, even with the mask on, have been there since Michael Crawford did it in 1986. It's just a lot more noticeable now because we have amazingly close zooms with the cameras, and high definition footage...
