  • Rest in Peace....

  • I remember when Falcon Seelster came to Toronto...the headline in the Toronto Star next day was "Falcon Seelster Blitzes Mohawk".

He shattered the all-age track record by several seconds (in cold weather no less!)...

    amazing horse...

  • I wish I was there I have a Falcon Seelster Philly. I hope she runs well!

  • I REMEMBER THIS WAS ON NBC IN !(*%----STILL GET CHILLS---that was sick----and Roger made it SO SO memorable---although Roger h could make a bunch of 2 claimers sound exiting, ...like "LOOK AT THE TIMER!!!....205:2!!! " ha..laughing--- he was great though...Great that you put these up for the freakies like me who love this, lived it---and wouldnt trade it for nada---personal reasons mostly---but still loved these special races---My own races always love more,.

  • I watched this race from the Meadowlands that day, I remember Falcon Seelster not being eligible for the Jug.This was the last race of the jug day on the card. Nihilator had been in the Jug earlier and everyone was raving about him. He went his mile if I recall 52 and change. I really think Falcon Seelster would have beaten him that day. This was a kick ass mile. true Nihilator did beat him, but sadly they never put Nihilator against the top older horses f the year, would have been interesting.

  • Does not matter who called this race! This horse on a half was 15 years ahead of his time! If Walter Case Jr was on him this day he would have paced in 1;49 and change. Personally I loved the call! Chills everytime! You stand up for a great horse not a great call! This horse was awesome!

  • i disagree..been going to the jug for bout 10 years and i get goosebumps on weds when they switch to him..he makes the jug "THE JUG"!!!!!!! diff opinion but hey,we luv the sport

  • falcon seelster was a beast..its too bad the connections didnt know what they had when he was 2...would have love to have seen him in the jug...his sire stats are undeniable

  • Roger Huston helps to keep harness racing small-time...his calls are over the top, very hokey, and make the race all about him! He reminds me of the NY Yankees' awful radio announcer John Sterling, who also thinks that the broadcast is all about him. Thoroughbred fans and general sports fans cringe when they hear a Huston call, and get reinforcement for their erroneous opinion that harness racing is a bush sport.

P.S.--Nihilator was dominant only on mile tracks and would have lost this day.

  • Sterling is worse...he's an ass

Huston does have an ego the size of the mayor's asshole

  • @STU676 the 3 best announcers ive ever heard were Ed gorman, Carl Becker, Robin Burns.

  • Yeah and Nihilator kicked Falcon Seelster's butt on those mile tracks

  • I get goosebumps every single time.

  • Just glad he wasn't in the Little Brown Jug That day....We fininhed 3rd in our heat and 6th in the final...Not bad for a home-bred colt

  • I never get sick of watching this! Chills every time!

  • @jthelgirlf I was there standing on a 5 gallon pail at the head of the stretch when the Seelster let loose...it was my greatest racing thrill then and I still get a thrill watching this today!

  • @jthelgirlf I get chills to watching this to! This mile was 20 years ahead of its time! I was lucky enough as a kid to see falcon seelster race at Hinsdale NH meet him and Tom Harmer!

  • @jthelgirlf Ditto...just an amazing call.

  • Just to put this in proper historical prespective- Falcon Seelster shattered the World Record by 2 and 3/5 seconds on this day. When Secretariat, the greatest racehorse ever, won the Belmont Stakes by 32 lengths, he shattered the World Record by 2 and 3/5 seconds as well. Not to mention making the rest of the Belmont field look like 6,000 claimers from Scioto Downs.

Falcon Seelster has sired the winners of over $95,000,000 far outpacing both Nihilator and Forrest Skipper.

  • Good to see someone who knows what their talking about.

  • @ekollros if any one knows about the falcon ed does what up from menace!

  • @ekollros And Falcon Seelster made a bunch of 6,000 claimers from Scioto Downs look like 1,000 claimers from Scioto Downs.

  • @ekollros -- yes and everybody knows who Secretariat was but you could say Falcon Seelster's name all day long on a street corner and eventually a special car would come to take you away to a mental hospital before anyone knew what you were talking about. Sad.

  • The man who broke and trained this horse until he was sold to american interests has just passed away last week,,,his name was yvon cormier of shediac new brunswick canada,,he was also a wrestler from years ago known as the Beast

  • FOR REAL? i totally didnt know beastie had him

  • as my dad told me "im young" they didnt let that horse in the jug that year cauase he didnt have enough earnings.and he ran fster than all jug horses .. can any body confirm this?

  • No.that is not correct. You have to pay a nomination fee when the colt is a yearling and continue to pay these nomination fees while a 2 and 3 year old. He was not eligible because he was not paid in as a yearling. I know, becuuse i witnessed this unbelievable feet by the Seelster and we had a colt in the Jug that day named named Destination first.

  • Falcoln Seelster was a small horse tailor-made for the half mile tracks....He could go with any horse on a half but couldn't go with the best horses on a mile track as his match race with Forrest Skipper proved

  • hey funship, im about 90 percent sure that was roger huston calling the race. and yes, i would have to rate my personal five greatest horses to live right here. 1.cambest 2.somebeachsomewhere 3.nihilator 4.art official 5. albatross and if i had a 6th, i would probibly have to throw deweycheatum in there so i didnt get MF'd

  • As stated below nihilator was a great champion....One of the greatest ever. Falcon Seelster may not have beaten him on any day in 85 but the fact is nihilator was not unbeatable.... he was owned in the adios, beaten on a 5/8's and scratched in the final thanks to maruader! Armbro dallas ran him down at garden state. I still think nihilator is top 5 greatest ever.... but falcon seelster could have beaten him in a heat on this day. 1:51 to nihilator hanging on in the stretch in 52 makes that so!

  • I love Nihilator, but to this day I have said that if Harmer did not give up the lead to Nihilator down the backstrecth, Falcon Seelster would not have lost that day.

Nihilator never drew clear that day in the strectch. The margin was pretty much the same the entire stretch.

  • Sorry, but Nihilaotor was a lot better than Falcon. Not taking anything away from Seelster, but Nihilator was a true champion. Even at the BIG M race, the Seelster had the perfect trip in the pocket and couldn't get to Nihilaotor. If he ever was going to beat Nihilator, it would have been with that trip.

    Just stating the facts.

  • Falcon seelster winning this race takes nothing away from nihilator. I do feel that falcon seelster was just secong best to nihilator for most of the year , but on this day he would have given him hell.... If anyone remembers the strategy was for nihilator to go to the lead at all cost... he had major problems on half mile track and barely won the jug because of a 54 half by broadway express. Nihaltor is a champion and falcon seelster is a horse us small timers would love to have had!

  • Falcon wa really really good but he beat a field of zeroes here

  • This race gives me chills!!!

  • I agree bigred, this was an unheard of performance at the time. Amazing racecall and even the cameraman couldn't keep the camera on the horse in the stretch, he literally ran out of the screen!

  • AMAZING MILE AT THE TIME.....Falcon seelster played second fiddle to nihalator for most of the year. Nihalator won the jug on this day , but falcon was the talk. Falcon was sorta of the poor mans nihalator , very fast with tremendous ability. Falcon seelster was not eligable for the jug and had to be supplemented to most major races. He was nihalator's only real competition in 85 , despite nihalator losing to marauder, in the adios and armbro dallas @ garden state.what a year in harness racing.

  • I was at the race at the Meadowlands when Nihilator defeated Falcon Seelster ( who was very game) and ran in 1:49. if I remeber correctly. Billy haughton said (back in 1985) that if the conditions were right, he felt Nihilator could run in 1:45 and change. I honestly believe that under todays trtacks and conditions, he could do that today. What a beautiful horse he was.

  • The most amazing race i ever saw from nihalator was in lexington as a 2 year old.... he beat niafirst in 1:52 and was parked the entire mile on the outside and drew off to win by 5. The equipment alone would have added 1-2 seconds today. I think nihilator would have gone around 1:47.1. This may sound a lil crazy but he was on the small side... he actually had tremendous stride.....nearly parellel. That was considered to be his achillies heel on a half mile track leading up to the jug.

  • 15...17..19... i wish he would have kept on going... what was the final margin.. like 25 lengths??? What a champion

  • I love how when the Falcon hits the 3 quarters, the annoucer doesn't even bother calling anyone else in the race..great perfomance

  • Quite possibly the greatest call in the history of harness racing...

  • Maybe if there were more calls like this it could help get more people to visits the tracks. It would also wake up all the old people with oxygen tanks that are there. This sport is dying and needs all the help it can get!

  • This call is fantastic and Roger Houston knows how to deliver, but I would also throw in the 84 breeders crown 2CG. I am partial to the 1980 Oliver Wendell Holmes in which niatross won over 13 others including storm damage.... Ed Gorman's call in this race was flawless, it flowed with excitement just as the race did.

  • I grew up at the Big M and Loved Ed Gormans calls.

    "Heeerree they come...Gooood girl"

Does he do and race calling today?

  • Yes Ed Gorman calls races at The Meadows in Pennslyvania and he still does the Jug Week races at Delaware Ohio

  • Stone, I was looking at recent races from the meadows and it was only Roger calling them. I e-mailed the track and they said Roger is the only announcer they have. Ed is not there. Do you know where Ed is this days?

    Thanks

  • Ed Gorman passed away

  • falcon seelster went in 1:51 flat in this race topping world record that was set its fritz. Nihalator won the jug on this day before falcons race. Falcon seelster wasnt eligable to race against nihalator in the jug.I dont think falcon would have won the jug outright but theres no doubt he would have won a heat. He was a second and a half better than nihalator this day. 1:51 was a record that even today is considered 1 hell of a mile on a half mile track , the current record is 1:49. @ same track

  • shit that commintator is crazy! awesome race though! Thats Elsu's sire(father)!! Look at my channel for videos on Elsu and info!

  • that horse didnt feel like racing that day did he?? Unbeliveable Mile!!!

  • Even thought the competition wasnt like the Little Brown Jug of that year....it was the way he dominated the race at the 3/4 pole....it was awesome to see him pull away.

  • This race was on the same day as the Little Brown Jug. Nihilator won the Jug that day and then Falcon was entered in an invitational later that day and beat 5000 claimers from Scioto Downs in this race.

Remember that Nihilator had beaten Falcon soundly twice that year.

People, let's get some perspective here!

  • Nihilator didnt go in 1:51 that day. Hows that for perspective!?

  • You take the time, I'll take the money. Deal?

  • Why, do you have a time machine?

  • haha that gave me chills

  • The last quarter mile it seemed like seelster was fresh as a daisy.....what a horse

  • Man, what an incredible race. *chills*

  • Phenomenal

  • i have falcon's baby

  • What a horse and what a finish!!! Incredible!
