As one of my favorite authors wrote, I believe that "suffering brings people together". It is also true that suffering draws us near to God, and I can say it out of experience; I LIVED Hosea 2:14. The most tender words of the Lord are heard in the desert. I believe that is trough suffering that we can not only understand, but experience God's love and we are able "to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ".
Yes indeed, suffering happens for a reason and gives us an opportunity to recover and makes bonds along the way.
I was on a group therapy once and there were some women there who had been raped. But if they hadn't have been raped they couldn't have opened up, relived the pain and ultimately make several connections and progressions in what was overall a very positive experience.
This really blessed me this morning. For me so much of suffering is about endurance, being refined, strengthening one's soul, loving/clinging to Jesus so much that we will die in faith if necessary, developing compassion, learning to forgive. I'm 51 and have had fibromyalgia for 26 years sometimes going 2 weeks without sleep with immense pain. Also a crippling paralyzing hypochondria. I have a nonverbal autistic son. Hard to take care of him when I'm sleepless and in pain. But God upholds me.
Christ will never leave you nor forsake you. No matter how much you are suffering...you can find peace in Christ. I wonder what Mary thought as she saw her son mocked, whipped, spit on and finally crucified? I'm sure she asked God ..WHY. Little did she know the reason for it until later when Christ returned.
@bornagain001 - Mary knew Jesus' mission on earth. She knew who He was in the flesh. What she didn't know was the extent of suffering He would endure for mankind. And yes, no doubt that alone must have tested her. She was rewarded prior to Jesus' ascension into Heaven with His giving her a son in John. Do not let that gift be overlooked as a reward for her having endured and having rose above her test.

God may purposefully test in order to refine. Job 23:10: “But He knows the way I take;
When He has tried me, I shall come forth as gold."
