  • Another method of doing the plates is to measure the distance between the plates on 5-10 links with a set of calipers. Average the measurements, then press the master link plates until they have the same width apart as the other average width of the other links. Might be time consuming but it's another method if the master link doesn't include the guards.

  • dunno why i wasn't subscribed to you :) thx for the tips i never had to do that , always dealer , wanna learn all this stuff thx again

  • Great job on these videos brothah, this will really help me in replacing my chain and sprocket soon on my R6. Dealers here are rediculous on their install prices. Im a DIY guy as well and i prefer doing things on my own. Keep up the great work and keep those videos coming. Good to see DIYers posting vids like this online. By the way, i noticed you said you prefer grinding the rivets on the chain from now on?

  • @JamesD ...yeah ....what i meant was I like to grind the head off the pin your breaking on the old chain first. Grinding the head off first just makes it easier on the tool when breaking your chain. It's not always necessary depending on the quality of your chain breaker.

  • I like your PAPER idea... I use a ruler.. But, I think ill go by your paper idea!! Nice!!! 1in. slack..

  • So the best thing is put a lil grease on the axle bolt and put grease inside the wheel hole.. So when you go slide the axle in, it will grease the whole axle inside the wheel.. You see what im saying??

  • One more thing for you to know.. When you grease the rear axle.. The best thing to do is put grease inside of the wheel. The part where you slide the axle into the wheel and it comes out on the other side. Alot of people dont know this, but when you grease the actual axle and when you go put the axle bolt back into the wheel the grease will slide off and gunk up the whole left side where you put your axle through. The grease wont be on the axle cause when you put it in, all the grease slides off

  • @LightningMAS ...appreciate the tip, will do from now on. Thanks.

  • @DarkFlightVlogs no problem.. anytime!

  • Good job Bro!!! Nice video

  • Nice....now I'm ready to tackle my first chain & chain wheel replacement. Thanks for the info =)

  • @Shogun09R1 ...hey Shogun...can't believe you watched them all, I figured you knew all that stuff already. Thanks a lot for watching bro !!!

  • @DarkFlightVlogs

Hey!!!....I know my attention span is questionable at best ;)

    What was I typing???

Anyways, I'm smart enough to know that I don't know everything. Your vids on this are very detailed and very helpful. I picked up a few things. I just did the R6's chain and sprockets last night. Taped a bit of it and will post it in a few days. Now I warn you, my vid is bare bones and is more of a how not to do something vid. but if cool with you I will post links to your vids in the des

  • @DarkFlightVlogs

cription. Ran outta room. Don't watch my vid bro...it will make you cringe, LOL!!!

Thanks again for the help with my chain and sprokets. Your vids are awesome!!!

  • @DarkFlightVlogs

What type of torque wrench do you use?

  • @DarkFlightVlogs

what type of torque wrench do you use? nice video

  • @R12007yamaha ....it's just a cheaper hardware store type.....cost me around $100

  • @DarkFlightVlogs

any specific Brand of torque wrench? Im ready to do my chain and sproket but im still not decided on which brand to use! any help with brand will be appriciated

  • @R12007yamaha ...cant really recommend a good brand because I'm not that familiar. Mine is a Mastercraft which is just a hardware store brand. Your gonna have to spend $80-$120 for a half decent one. I know top of the line ones cost over $300. So long as your careful with it (don't drop it etc...) it should be fine.

Most people don't even torque their stuff so the fact you have one means your already ahead of the game :)

Sorry I can't be more help....maybe ask a local mechanic?

  • Peened the ends over with a hammer on my chains and never had a problem. Cool video though well done you.

  • @tonyblade1000 ...I've seen friends do the same and I say "hey whatever works".

    Thanks for the comment.

  • @sandbagit ...thanks for the comment.

Yeah definitely not the1st job you want to try on a bike that's for sure.

  • Great video! Changed my Ducati 848's 525 chain with watching this video!! Props

  • this is a brilliant and very informative set of videos for the novice mechanic attempting to do this. Thanks for your help :)

  • @JamBerryKing ...thanks for watching :)

  • Hello! Where can I buy this tool on ebay? Shipping to Brazil

  • @SerJaumBR ....just search "motorcycle chain breaker tool" or something like that until you get a hit.....I have no idea about shipping things to Brazil sorry, but the seller will be able to answer all your questions I'm sure.

  • This was just what I needed to see. I'm going to alot more watchful as I do my chain and sprockets on my 650 Ninja . Great job ! Looking forward to viewing future vids. you do.Thanx

  • Because you are so thorough you've really got me thinking my chain is too tight. Chain slack on my GSXR should be 25-30mm. I can get to that amount of travel by applying quite strong force with one hand. Basically if I push the chain up hard I can almost make it touch the swingarm. Gonna get it checked tomorrow.

  • Keeping the Brit's up and running too :-) we are in a ressession hear and it's great that i can come on youtube and find people who take their time out to teach the less mechanicaly minded how to save a few quid and still be able to ride on a budgit :-) Thank you

  • @tobyontour24 ...your very welcome, just remember my videos are a rough guide-line as I'm not a professional. Cheers !!

  • Thank you for this excellent instruction! I really appreciate your attention to detail and solid video quality.

  • This is a very good demonstration. I gotta give Props. This tool is well worth it in order to remove/install a new chain.

  • for me as a total amateur, these videos are proffesional guidelines! thank you - this is really "motorbike for dummies" and I love it! all the detailes are mentioned. Perfect help!

  • @divermg ...thanks a lot but always follow your owners manual for the exact procedures.

This is just to give you the idea :)

  • @divermg

    Ya this a great Vid

  • @cipherscope ...well thanks very much, but remember they are only a guideline because I'm far from a pro.

  • Hi, thanks for your youtubes's... what could be the basic tool for motorcycle hoobies?

    ...I really appreciate it.

  • @victor35ma ...no problem :)

  • Hey DF, do you feel doing the 520/-1/+2 power up conversion is worth it in respect to your gas milage decrease?

  • @lampingromeo ...honestly man there are things I don't like about it. My gas mileage has dropped by about 30kms per tank. The gas goes even faster if I'm really hard on the throttle.

My rpm's are also up quite a bit and it's almost too much at highway speeds, but that could also be because I'm still getting use to it

However I like the extra power down low, so really it's a coin flip, still kind of undecided really?

I don't know why anyone would do this to 1000cc bike, that would be a waste IMO.

  • @DarkFlightVlogs Thanks for your feedback bro! I'm undecided if I want to regear my bike due to the gas milage suffering, especially in this economy with gas at 4.25/g already. I use my bike more for commuting than anything else. Maybe I'll just due the -1 only...

  • @lampingromeo ...could even keep it completely stock, don't forget these machines are beasts even straight out the box :)

  • yes keep up the good work with the videos

the way you put info across is very well done and clear too

and will help a lot of people get this right

    cheers

    rich

  • @thejediukuk ...I really appreciate that !!

Thanks for the support and for watching :)

  • Well done brotha! Very thorough and I love that you check everything multiple times as I do! That can make the diffence between life or death as all it takes is one mechanical failure! Cheers bro!

  • @lampingromeo .....I heard so many horror stories of people screwing this up their first couple of times. This was my first attempt with the rivet style master link and I had to nail it first try, Taking your time is the only way to even have a chance. Seems like we are on the same page for sure man and please don't be shy about pointing out my mistakes, your comments might help someone else !! Video responses always welcome and I appreciate your viewing :)

  • good video man. Im glad you did such a long and in-depth video because you need to make sure to cover all the bases when working on something so important to the performance of the motorcycle. Keep them up dude!

  • @chasein3d ...just remember to spread the word these video's are NOT how to videos !!!

I just want people to see what's involved with a procedure before they attempt it. No matter how detailed I try there is no way to explain every single detail on You Tube. You'd need a 2 hour video or more for some of these things!!!

    Thanks for the support :)

  • good video , but you forgot to grease the pins

  • @thejediukuk ....thanks and you are right. However I had so much on the O-rings that it no doubt lubed them as I put them on. You are correct though it sure wouldn't hurt to give them a shot. Thanks 4 the comment :)

  • @thecrazyhenchman ...thanks :)

  • Neat. +1 for the plates. Wish I had em. Takes a lot of the guesswork out.

    Great vid!

  • @wedginator .... The plates are a huge bonus especially without the calipers.

Thanks for all your help on this topic, and for having such great videos yourself.

I owe you a debt of thanks my friend !!!!

You have quite a mechanical gift man :)

  • bro i dont miss having to do that at all i love my vfr with the single sideed swing arm takes all of 2 min to adjust the chain but you did a execellent vid on this topic for sure keep up the good work

  • @kd4ysi ....hey man thanks a bunch :)

Your lucky to have a single sided swing arm ....and it looks great.

I'd like to see a video on how easy it is sometime :)

  • whats gearing is that?

  • @HoldMyBaws ....-1+2 15/45 teeth "Powered Up!"

  • For aligning the wheel, I recommend using a caliper and getting it as close as possible on both sides with the adjustment nuts.

  • @Pittimus84 ...for sure man.

I had almost an hour of footage on this and condensed it to 15 minutes. I spoke a lot about digital calipers (even though I don't have a set yet), but sadly it hit the cutting room floor.

I absolutely agree with you as it's the only way to get it perfect. Thanks for your comment !! :)

  • @DarkFlightVlogs lots of footage haha, yeah man a lot of people don't realize a caliper is the way to go for rear wheel alignment. I was looking through one of my video's i thought i had mentioned it but i guess i didn't unless i missed it.

  • @Pittimus84 ...I will do some annotation work after I watch the hockey game....lol.

Thanks for watching these videos man, your input is always appreciated.

I also should have made my chain a link longer (did you notice the axle is almost maxed out?), I was still able to achieve proper tension with ease but I admit it was close .....and it should stretch a little.

  • @DarkFlightVlogs yeah i was looking at the adjuster once you had the chain slack set, and i was like hmm that looks a little close but he still has some room left for any more adjustment. Yeah the chain will stretch a little over time, so you should be aright.

  • will u color it red :o?

  • @iopghjk001 ...you can buy it in red and I didn't know until after :(

    Oh well......

  • @mike213yo ...thanks 4 watching :)
