Having just returned from Greece, I can assure you the spoken word is in decline. The Greeks seldom use the proper verb for an action, instead they opt to overly use the verb kano followed by a noun, ie: kano thouleia, kano taksithi, kano volta etc.
Colloquiallism has gone too far, and made spoken greek essentially a dialect of the Greek language.
@protochris you are totally wrong. Ok, we say kano douleia(κάνω δουλειά), exw doueleia(έχω δουλειά) instead of doulevο (δουλεύω), but i think en every language you can say (i'm doing some work, i have work to do, instead of i'm working). Also, we dont use "kano" for taxithi and volta, we use pigaino/pao (i'm going)- whitch is also used in english.Maybe u confused it with "kalo taxithi" which means "have a nice journey"
@protochris The question however lies: to what people did you speak? Because if you spoke to low class people or to immigrants that is natural that they will speak simplistically. Others however won't; You have to pick up your company.
@protochris Not Greek then. TV channels are controlled by Jewish people. Our prime minister Jeffrey Papandreou is Jewish and 10 years back Kostas Simitis was also Jewish (Aaron Avouri his real name...). Both speak very badly Greek. Those journalists on tv are chosen particularly for their lack of education. You won't see anyone serious there.
Note: do not get shocked at all. I am not anti-jewish. These people do not even come from the Greek jewish community they are foreign people coming fromUS
@notgodsemigod Greece is a country under foreign occupation. Officially. Greeks know it. But cannot do anyting about it. They are entangled in an extremely complex game. If they move a cm, war and genocide awaits them. You cannot understand how large is the game in the area.
i notice that "για" sounds more as if it was spelled "γε" and that when she says "δε θα χιονίσει" the sound of "θ" is barely heard, it is much more like a light "χ" sound (like English "h"). This is the kind of thing that is never talked about in textbooks.
Another example, when she says "απόγευμα" it is almost like "απόχευμα". I have been studying Greek for years out of books but have a hard time understanding even very simple dialogs like this. Frustrating!
@skhudronzhoglo I agree, it took many many years to catch the sounds of the spoken greek pronunciation. I picked up in Spanish in one year what it took 7 years to understand in Greek. The Greeks speak their language like barbarians.
@protochris Of course it's not true that "the Greeks speak their language like barbarians". Every language is spoken just fine by its speakers. It's just that some phonetic systems are easier than others for the foreign student to catch. Italian, for example, is spoken very clearly.
@protochris Barbarians? Greek is the mother of all languages. We have more words than any other language and our language flexibility is one of the best. Germans talk like barbarians, and americans who destroy thei own language
@skhudronzhoglo guys no, θ is always pronounced exactly as "th" in the word "think".Always.Now, in a conversation it might sound sometimes harder or lighter depending on the person who speaks, how fast he speaks etc..but this happens in every language. Also γ is γ, it has nothing to do with x! X is pronounced as "h" in the words "have, hear",etc
@aggelospanatha You missed the point. Any linguist will tell you, that what native speakers think their phonetics are, and what they really are, are two different things.
Of course I know what the official sounds of χ, γ, and θ are. But if you really listen to the audio (at about 0:17, for example) you will see that what I wrote before is exactly correct.
@skhudronzhoglo well, i don't know they sound very clear to me..may be because I'm native greek and I'm used to it. The funny thing is that in these dialogues they speak very slowly and very clear on purpose and sound a little weird to me! :P. I understand why you got confused in the part "λέει για χιόνι", he said those words a little faster and "για" didn't sound so clear
@skhudronzhoglo dude, 'θ' is clearly 'θ' not a 'χ'. Im a native speaker and i will assure you that we dont 'forget' letters or change them. 'θ' and 'χ' do not exist in english or german and YOU may lose their sound. + We speak a lot slower than germans. Try to listen the ending of a german word. Almost impossible. And 'h' sounds different than 'χ'. It has a difference that you cannot understan if you dont live in greeCE
To anyone interested in learning Greek: feel free to spam me with any question regarding the language. I'll try to help as good (to my knowledge) as possible.
@ilovechrisYA i hope this helps: -Γεια σου,Άννα! Καλή σου μέρα, επίσης! and the translation:
@ilovechrisYA -Hello, Anna! -Hello,Niko. -What a nice day! -Yes, very nice. -Did you listen to the weather forecast? -I did. -And what do they say? -They say it's going to rain in the evening. -Do they say anything about snowing? -No,it's not going to snow. It's not cold enough to snow. -Do you like snow? -I like it.When I stay home and I don't have to work. -Bye, Anna. Have a nice day. -Bye,Niko.You too, have a nice day!
for instance "i ll be there at 7 p.m."= θα είμαι εκεί στις 7 μ.μ. (tha Ime eKI stis 7 m.m.), where will you spend on your holidays?= που θα πας διακοπές; (pou tha pas diakopes?) ΘΑ= WILL so whenever you here the word θα(tha) with a verb next to it you can easily tell that it is in the future ; )
@chiefrainintheface Παρακαλώ! ( actually its "ευχαριστώ", usually after ε follows an υ which in this case sounds like φ or β). Keep trying " τσιφ ρέινινγκ ιν δε φέις "!! :P
@chiefrainintheface Δέν θέλω να την θυμάμαι. Here come the first difficulties, in the word Θέλω the final "o" is written with the letter omega not the "o", and the normal omega is ω which differs from the capital omega which is Ω.
