I remember this from when I was kid. It was horrifying! i watched this when I was like 8. But now that I understand more, this movie is really good. :) loved the book too
Weird, I saw just about every kids or animated movie when I was little but this one. I even squirmed into watching Wizards at about 6 or so. god I was horridied... XD
This is a good and faithful adaptation of the Book which shows that being a rabit is full of danger as almost everything tries to eat you. Most disney films are adaptations that have cut out the nasty parts of the subject material to make them Appropriate for children (example the little mermaid orignial version the prince marries annother women and the mermaid considers killing him before committing suicide) however that is not possible with watership down
I'm sorry why must it be one or the other? I grew up watching this and Disney movies and you know what? IT IS GOOD!! You can't have pure dark drama all the time you have to have some light-hearted fun too!
Okay everyone. Really? THINK. This movie is a DRAMA. Most kids films are a COMEDY. You all keep saying "This movie isn't for kids" Then bashing kids films for not being as mature as it. Also anyone who says CGI isn't art, or that the people doing it are just "computer geeks" and not artists, you are EXTREMELY ignorant. Go watch the 'making of' of any cg movie. Look up the program Zbrush. Do you think the aliens in Avatar invented, modeled, painted, and animated themselves?
My dad introduced me to this wonderful movie, besides the blood the animation was unforgettable. Any child who is shown this movie shouldn't have too much to fear.
@MSBrown1115 I think people are overreacting. I grew up with this film, and I wasn't mentally scarred. I suppose people have different coping levels, but for me this story was just really awe inspiring and beautiful. I read the novel when I was ten and loved it too.
To be fair to the parents who showed their very young children this film scarring them for life (including my older sister) the beginning does look like this is going to be a film for young kids and then the blood comes as a total shock. This has become one of my favourite movies ever, the artwork is wonderful.
UGH. Getting sick of all the idiots bashing Disney because of some movie.
Yes, this movie is good, but just because Disney is more lighthearted doesn't mean its bad, and it definitely doesn't mean that Disney didn't have some darker moments of its own. Blood =/= a good movie.
You can't compare the two, anyway. Just because the movie is animated doesn't mean it's for kids, and this movie (as well as the novel) definitely isn't for children. Get over yourselves.
@Kari166 And there is a difference between his movie in this that no one else sees. Time and convention. In Disney's day cartoons were adult's entertainment (I mean, Look into Betty Boop's reels) Disney was loved because it was more refine story-wise, thus more adult. We live in the times were every piece of kids animation look to his work and so we grow up automatically seeing his work as a kid movie. in snow White first showing, the house (of adult celebrities mostly) were crying by the apple.
@Kari166 this movie is good for children but it work well for any ages to watch aswell so take youre own get over yourself with youre talk that it isnt for children
@HumphreyTheWolf. well some disney movie, especially the oler ones all have hapily ever after. but take a disney movie like the Hunchback of Notre Dame, that watered down, and it has a happy ending, but the over-all tone is dark, and it focuses on taboo topics, even live action films struggle with, like lust, corruption of the church, execution, racism, beauty, the laws of sanctuary and the question of humanity.
I know this is called a classic, but its NOT a childs movie. It is so incredibly gory. The plot, the theme, are all relative valid and true but to show this to a young kid, not something a wise parent would do. Faar too violent.
whenever i'm lonely or just depressed with this sad world we have warped, i watch this movie. the mark of an amazing children's movie is being able to watch it well into adulthood and still be deeply moved emotionally. i will never forget watership down :)
Whoa. This is great. I read the book some years back, it was definitely something. I heard of the movie but never found it anywhere forever. Thanks for putting this up. :)
@Loganberrybunny Only Richard Adams could tell you for sure, but I think it helps add that "non-human" feel to the characters without going the whole hog (or bunny!) and doing everything in a foreign language like Klingon etc.
@TheJayman213 There are often words in one language that don't readily translate to another. While that's not always the case in Watership Down (Elil is easily understood to mean predator), a society with a word of such importance as Elil in it, with the meaning it has, is meant to give you a strong sense of their prey nature. It's similar to the idea that Hindi has ~40 words for love, and Sami has hundreds of words for snow. Culture shapes language (and vice versa).
O My this movie still scares the hell out of me (note: 20 years old right now) XD
My mom brought this movie home once when I was like 6 or something saying: 'look a movie about rabbits, you like rabbits right. Let's watch it!' It was a really traumatic experience :p
Yesterday I saw the movie, today I'm gonna blaim my parents for showing me those awfully naive disney movies instead of this all time epic classic movie full of wisdom that is essential for a good moral existence. I'm 20 years old, and when I get kids, they will see this! I do not care if they have 5 dimensional tv's with smell-o-vision at that time. My kids are gonna see this!
@matz2005 I think you shouldn't bash Disney like that, This movie may not have even existed if it was for his making the drawing speaking and accompany music, and MOSTLY Snow White for animated movies posible (The notion of cartoon movies was hated instantly, you can assume that no one else was going to do this but him) and being that you say that he film are childish and never dark, because both films are in different times and convention, I'll can say more if you reply, so I have room.
I called this the "Bad Rabbit Show" (Watership Down) when I was little because it scared me. The "Good Rabbit Show" was Peter Rabbit. But I used to love watching Watership Down and when it got scary I'd go run to my mom and hide my face on her shoulder. My young mind couldn't even grasp what it was about! But I still love my Bad Rabbit Show! And my Mommy, for covering my eyes when the bad rabbit came on!
I saw this movie as a child, and as a young adult, I watched this movie with a very special girl who is no longer part of my life. Just thinking about this movie, and how deep and moving, as well as the emotions it evoked in various stages of my life, is fucking mindblowing.
Oh its been so long since I've seen this movie, It surpireses me how much blood and death are in this when I first watch this around 7 or 8 years of age and that todays cartoons for kids won't even let them SEE blood, they have to edit it out. When I do have kids there not going to be allowed to watch the cartoons of the times instead I'll show them the REAL cartoons like this, Gargoyles, The Real My little pony etc, the artwork is so much better and the storyline really have depth to them
I'm surrounded by this countryside. It's VERY early on a sunday morning, (clocks turned back an hour for Winter), WHY am I sitting here drinking brandy????!!
No Disney film could ever hold a candle to this classic, powerful, moving, beautiful, deep, and dark animation, so pure, no computerized bullshit. This is a tale so powerful it gives me goosebumps, amazing, amazing, amazing. "All the world will be your enemy, prince with a thousand enemies, and whenever they catch you, they will kill you..but first they must catch you" If only Children knew real movies, not 'Kung fu panda' (So many scenes in here touch you in a way like no other)
@dubstepwolf I don't mean any offense to what you're saying, and i agree that children should be shown films that can teach them values more important then what disney has to offer, but I think that there should be a fair balance of it.
Maybe they could be shown innocent , films that are just meant to put smiles on their faces and then sometimes films with meaning that are meant to make them think and understand things.
I know it sounds weird but I'm just saying i think both are important.
@MajorHarvestMoonFan This world isn't about innocence and putting smiles on faces. Watership Down showed us that, yet... through all the hardships they went through.. they came out on top.. and that's what makes me, and others smile.
@dubstepwolf no of course not, and they will learn that in later life, and there's no reason they shouldn't be educated about life ending at a young age too, but i'm saying i think there should be a fair balance of both, movies like this are deep and involved and make you feel and learn things.
But I think that they should show kids a bit of both you know?
They should be able to understand drama, as well as just watch somethin for a laugh i think. o.o
@dubstepwolf Agreed, the book & film are great, but.... it's not really a kid's film. That's not taking any of the greatness from it, mind you, but I don't think it's mandatory viewing for 6-and-7 year olds. Besides, "Toy Story 3" "Finding Nemo" and "Percepolas" are perfect animated movies that are all about the darkness and beauty of humanity.
@dubstepwolf Watched this back when I was ten. Doing so again now at 29. You are so right, this is the kind of films that are missing from our entertainment industry. The message of this film is still very relevant today.
@dubstepwolf I agree that this film is fantastic. A work of art. But that's not saying that films like "Kung Fu Panda" don't have their place. If this were the only level of animation available, if there was no lighter fare available, your head would soon explode.
@alcockell Dude, some Beatrix Potter tales scared me (in a good way) as a kid. The illustrations were so cute and cuddly, and then all of a sudden Owl bites the tail off of the Squirrel, or something like that. And Peter was always avoiding getting caught and eaten, just like El-Ahrairah.
I watched this as a kid and I was scared as hell for long. Some time ago I remembered this and read the book (I'm almost done with it!) which is amazing. But still, I'm way too scared to watch this movie...
What is disturbing to one person may not be at all to another person. I watched this movie as a child and was scared by some of the scenes but I liked the movie, I liked the message and the characters. I grew up mostly normal. lol. Everyone wants to pacify kids now, label them ADHD and bi- polar, spoon- feed them meds, and blame cartoons for making them psychos. It's pretty ridiculous.
Such a beautiful film...and a very strong message about simply how life is. I think I remember this playing when I was a kid, but never watched it because I thought it was some random disney cartoon lol...man was I wrong then! This should never be remade; honestly if they did, a lot of the good o' stuff would be cut off.
The narrator here is Michael Hordern one of Britain's most brilliant and versatile character actors. He played, convincingly, everything from Marley's ghost to Admiral Tovey. I miss his work.
when i was around 5 or 6, my i was watching telly with my grandparents. we watched a scene from this, i thought it was another oldish cartoon which i had a fasination with. when i saw the rabid rabbit or wat ever is wrong with him dig into the borrow and kill a rabbit i was terrified! i covered my eyes and asked to change the channel XD
I watched this when i was about 4-7 years old. I never knew the name of the movie, I only remember the most graphic parts. I never remembered the plot, so I thank you for posting this.
I remember this from when I was kid. It was horrifying! i watched this when I was like 8. But now that I understand more, this movie is really good. :) loved the book too

The message of this film is still very relevant today.
booteeny24 2 months ago
@dubstepwolf I agree that this film is fantastic. A work of art. But that's not saying that films like "Kung Fu Panda" don't have their place. If this were the only level of animation available, if there was no lighter fare available, your head would soon explode.

@dubstepwolf kids are in it for the humor, ok? show this to a teenager.

@kickodude IRonically, even Beatrix Potter's material had Peter and Benjamin cheating probable death a number of times...
alcockell 3 months ago
@alcockell Dude, some Beatrix Potter tales scared me (in a good way) as a kid. The illustrations were so cute and cuddly, and then all of a sudden Owl bites the tail off of the Squirrel, or something like that. And Peter was always avoiding getting caught and eaten, just like El-Ahrairah.
