Two of Britain's Masters of Chuck Berry's 'licks' at work together 1974 - 'must admit Ronnie excells himself on this one and Keith, subtle as ever, drawing on some of his early Stones recording style phrases - what a blend and an amazing concert - one of the most exciting I can remember.
So...who's the drummer? And the dude in white pants (not Keith, not Ron, not Rod and certainly not Ian Mclagan) that's presumably riding the bass? This is a TREAT! LOVE IT! <3 Thanks for sharing!
@redwoodrebelgirl This is the Faces so the drummer is Kenney Jones and, because this is their last concert, Ronnie Lane had already left and the bass player is Tetsu Yamauchi (only guessing with the spelling of his surname).
one more thing. true greatness, true art? only lasts for a very short time. one needs to catch it when its available. keith is great here so is everyone playing in the band. if you wanted to try and explain real rock n roll? here it is in all it's decadent glory. love these cats! kh
the faces.wonder if they ever miss each other? these guys were so fuckin cool i can't fuckin stand it.listen to ians piano!!! they were only rivaled by the beatles and the stones. rod stewart never sounded better. totally on top of theyre game here. and god bless ronnie lane. best , kh
one of the nights when the faces were on. some nights they could suck so bad. however, when these guys were on? look the fuck out!!!!!! when they weren't drunk? they wrote the book ! kh
Wished I'd said "primordial" and "distilled" rather than "pure" and "invented," but I'm no historian so no matter. Anyhow, IM's keyboards are great tho interesting to compare them to Johnny Johnson's on the Berry original(s). Kenny Jones does a stellar job of allowing KR to control the tempo from around 4:00-5:00min in. Transcendant. R 'n' R would never have been what it is w/o ENSEMBLE playing and/or players. Maybe that's partly why Punk and virtually everything thereafter suffered.
Can't recall a better "pure" Rock 'n' Roll number...If Berry "invented" it - and seems he more or less did - nothing short of phenomenal that two decades later Keith (especially) & Woodie were still "perfecting" the form. Wether he'd admit it or not, Chuck would be jealous. "Brilliant?" Yes. Utterly. ABSOLUTELY. I'd only add "Triumphant" and every other superlative I could think of. Anyhow, Rod Stewart certainly isn't Sam Cooke (his idol) or much less Little Richard, but not too terribly bad.
@blufrenchie That rockin' piano is played by Ian McLagan....possibly the greatest rock n'roll piano player of all times! Kenny Jones on drums; who joined the Who after Keith Moon died. In their prime, before Ronnie Lane (bass player) left....there simply was no better rock n' roll band, pound for pound....than Faces.
@swiggy58a LOVE the Faces. It's hard to understand why some bands break up or don't 'make' it. And today, it's almost impossible to break into the business...I should know.
Mac replaced someone else in the Small Faces, which means that Kenney is the only member in 1974 who was in the Faces from the start. That solo from Ron is great
with the jeff beck group and the faces he was king shit! but then he took a monster nose dive and is now a major knobshiner althought his misses is quite hot
the groove here is just spot-on. Love this song and the band is playin insanely tight!!
