This isnt an episode. This is the Samurai X OVA. Its the prequel that sets up the events of the animated seriese Ruroni Kenshin. The OVA is split in 2 parts. Trust and betrayal. Without spoiling too much, It pretty much explains Kenshin`s violent past and the tragedies of his life. There is another OVA that is an epilogue of the animated seriese. I wouldnt recomend watching that though. It has the saddest ending of any story ive ever seen. Anime book or movie....

god i hate this ova. The voice acting is terrible it sounds like kenshin has depression same with tomoe and since when did okita became kenshins bitch?  Last i check both him and saito were equal in strength only rumor was that saito was better and kenshin even stated that there was never any conclusion when he fought the squad members of the shinsengumi. Another thing i dont like is there was no humor in this. In the manga they had some humor in it and it actually showed the real kenshin

This doesn't even follow the manga or anime. Saito was never Okita's master, Okita was sick when they met Kenshin for the first time and Saito butted in.

In reality, Okita was rumored to be the strongest of the Shinsengumi despite the real life Saito being a badass in his own right. I believe he was a kenjutsu instructor.

lol, don't know why they changed it in English version, but in the Japanese dub of RK, Okita refers to Saito as Saito-san in the typical friendly attitude. Okita is still 1st Captain and Saito is still 3rd Captain. But yea, technically Okita is of equal or higher rank than Saito.

@KyojiK It has a lot to do with how the two languages flow. There have been many directly translated anime, but they all suffer from the same awkward moments where the dialogue makes no sense at all. Even with a looser than normal translation like this had more than it's fair share of awkward dialogue that didn't really make sense unless you really thought about it.

Then you have Human error, cultural misunderstandings, and badly interpreted meanings for words. It used to be a lot worse, DBZ for example had a fairly lose translation the entire show in a mixed attempt to make the dialogue more fluid in English, and fill in some cultural misunderstanding by simply replacement.

I still like Rurouni Kenshin(The slightly happier version of this) better than the OVAs... I dunno. The voices (In the dub) are better, and even though the animation style is different, I still like it. The OVAs are too dreary, and even they don't follow the manga very much. I'm glad to hear that they're animating something new though. 'Bout time :3

Saito wasn not Okita' master, Okita did not carry a Kiku-ichimonji Nori-mune. Okita was a Cpt, not a Lt of the 1st squad. Okita sword style was in Tennen Rishin-ryū. Saito's Style was Ittō-ryū, possibly the Hokushin Ittō-ryū version or Mugai Ryū.

Considering the Shinsengumi's first rule he probably would have used Dono, which could be translated as master. I actually have more of an issue with how Saitou speaks. given his personality, and not the one Ruroken shows, he would have been much more polite

@bls90 there were mistakes on the dub. Okita was not a lieutenant, he was the captain of the first unit. So he was equal to Saito in ranking and, acording to some historic references, in swordmanship abilities. (sorry for my bad english)

@mrbartozio from what I have read Okita was the most highly regarded swordsman in the Shinsegumi. Not that he would kick the other captain's asses easily, but he was acknowledged as superior, IIRC. In part that's why Soujiro is so damn good in Rurouni Kenshin, being based on Okita; Soujiro could have defeated Shishio if he wanted to (in my opinion) and he only lost to Kenshin because of his psychological issues. As far as pure talent goes, he and Hiko Seijuro were the best in the series.
