It is a shame that whatever the European called us or addresse us as, our people accepted and embraced wholesomely. The word should be what the people addressed themselves as, and not the word "Maroon" which is used to describe as isolated. Our original names have also disappeared, including some words in our language all because of this inferiority complex nature of accepting or looking up to the European language.
That's why I never accept the word "Patios - (pat-wa)" for our native dialet.
Man the internet is such a wonderful place. I just searched Marcus Garvey (someone mentioned him on a forum), then looked at the bottom under category and saw "National Heroes of Jamaica", which then lead me to "Nanny of the Maroons", and thus leading me here in search of more information on the history of slavery in Jamaica, more specifically the Maroons.
I thought that the Maroons were natives to the americas..?? I kno they were black and could easily be mistaken as an African. they were so successful at fightin the krackas, they knew the terrain better. Of course they intermingled wit slaves after freein them from their bondage. But I was convinced that the maroons were native americans of jamica. Is this so??
We are not from Africa, we were already hear before the Europeans came here. Why would a race of Criminals who said they had enslaved our Ancestors tell you the truth about your History? Wake up people!
you are very ignorant to say "we are not from Africa"....is there something wrong with Africa why you ppl keep saying tht?...for you information it is believed that the very beginning of mankind started in AFRICA... read the GOOD BOOK (bible) and you wont be so ignorant and uneducated about your history darling.
the Awaraks were already there before the Eurpeans came nad Africans were probably there before the whole slave thing too but you cannot look at live evidenced in living colours and say "we are not from Africa"....look at our culture (Jamaican culture ofcourse) and our physical appearnce and tell me we are not from Africa... most Jamaicans are mixed w/ a variety of race/ppl epsecially Africans..thts why our motto declares "OUT OF MANY ONE PEOPLE"
how can you look history in its face and say "we are not from Africa"...are you going to deny all tht our National Heroes did for us? Are you going to deny the bravery, greatness, leadership, independence, power, knowledge and wisdom in the black race tht our people revealed through the history tht they made in our country? I am proud to say I am mixed w/ Maroons (African) Chinese, Indian n Irish..becuz thts JAMAICA..mny 1 ppl
@pmpm777 i mean no disrespect but please research the history of jamaica or the carribean islands and you will find a wealth of culture from arawak indians who travelled from the americas, maroons, countries like benin, ghana cote dvoire europe and others which have influenced the language -patios. You can easily find this through google search engine. Dont remain ignorant...again i mean you only good.
There were some already here in fact a very few. This stil dose'nt give you the right to say "we" as in everyone the vast majority (99%) of us did come here on boats from africa. So you wake up brother.

This woman does not have a clue about what she is talking about.
The Maroons were "freed slaves" - freed by the Spanish on the arrival of the British. They were armed by the Spanish as the Spanish fled the island. The Maroons knew quite a bit about profit making. Because they have infact sold runaway slaves back to the Plantations - Yes, for profit. Many of the Jamaican National Heros were sold out by the Maroons. Woman, you should be ashamed of yourself preaching false history like that
Half truth there were two main Maroon groups there was one faction that when pressed through time would take a short term term goal and help th e invader but there was another group on that island that didn't divide and conquer is as old as dirt peace and blessings.
WOOW Thanks for posting this gal... Never knew the jamaican maroons were linked to the ghanaian akans.. Well i am an ashanti and im travellin to the carribean this vacation to visit ma lost brothers and sisters..
also most of what jesus taught goes against what the bible says and what modern tax exempt institutions called churchs teach you. this may sound CRAZY but it is obvious if you can read sentences and think that jesus's teachings are opposed to the churchs doctrine, dogma, etc. Faith = blindly submit, do not think for yourself etc...this is not what jesus taught. Also on the sermon on the mount he said we are all god, there is no monotheistic male diety without a wife running this joint! !
your into battling slavery and oppresion but your favorite book on your page is listed as the bible? Makes no sense to me. Even if you find much comfort in god and jesus's teaching the bible is hardly the place to look...this will only confuse you and make you more of a slave. God is freedom. the bible is historical document used to promote war, economics, property, domination of women, slavery and blind obediance.
thts why I dnt just get up and say anything about wht is sd to be "God's words"...dont mess w/ spirituality like tht....just think...wht if your wrong..isnt tht then called BLASPHEMY...just saying you...just like how alot of things puzzle me in the bible but tht doesnt mean I shud tek it up on myself and say its wrong...or tht Jesus teachings are wrong...sure the bible has been fabricated or its nothing like the original but mi nah point out seh this wrng unles FADA GOD tell mi suh Himself
@SFwizardoakland I understand what you are saying, and I agree that I do not specifically accept the Canon from the Roman Catholic Church. But I do still feel solace in many of the pages within the Bible.
@SFwizardoakland Many ancient Africans (Nubians) were Christian and read the Bible long before Europeans came and brought us their version of the Bible and the violence that came along with their distorted perceptions of Christianity. It is historically naive to blame all the problems of man on just one book...
And it doesn't take into account all the centuries of resistance to slavery, war, violence and inequality that the book inspired. Your analysis is very one-sided!
