Whether or not there are any problems with this presentation depends on the intended audience, and the intended purpose of the presentation. It is certainly US centric - for example, using 'other cultures' all the way through - but if it is for a US audience, that is ok.
Main issue is that it presents an idealised view of US. Taking the UK media as an example - our coverage of China lacks accuracy, but we like to believe our media are fair and free. This apparent hypocrisy by us annoys others.
@reyty2 You have never traveled the world have you? either that or you're blind. This isn't just an advertisement of the US. Its a horribly biased and inaccurate one. I sincerely hope that international communication is not your area of studies, or worse - your field of work.
@Spets25 I have lived in three continents: Western Europe, North America, & Asia. I have been to Abu Dhabi, Argentina, Bangladesh, Brazil, Cambodia, Canada, China, Hong Kong, Denmark, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Malaysia, Monaco, Nepal, Pakistan, Philippines, Singapore, Spain, Switzerland, Taiwan, Thailand & too many other countries to mention. And you?
@reyty2 How about this whole comparison of "US mainstream" with the elusive "some societies"? How does that serve the purpose of learning, if you can't even bother to mention what are you comparing US to?
Not to mention that most of them (say, everything between 01:15 and 02:01) basically touts how superior this "US mainstream" is to "some societies".
The "sun people vs. ice people" thingy in the beginning was pure rubbish, too.
@Arrinmurri Where in the slides did I say the "US mainstream" is superior to "some societies"? It's all in your prejudgment and imagination. Just *not* in the slides. You got it all wrong.
