Back when these films were made allot was misunderstood. Green buckskins were not really worn, the eating of human flesh, did happen, but it wasn't by the insane, native warriors used it as a survival tactic, this way they didn't have to Carry food for a return trip home, also my insisters beveled they absorbed the courage and strength of there enemy's.
Read "White Devil" by Stephen Brumwell (2004). It details, among other adventures of Rogers' Rangers, the harrowing forced retreat after their destruction of St. Francis that required some of the Rangers to resort to cannibalism to survive. Great piece of nonfiction.
"No, you ain't hungry enough yet." Closer to the truth than most viewers ever knew.
The film was ok but didn't capture the desperation of the soldiers in the book. Additionally, aside from the usual Hollywood failing of changing really significant details (Rogers [Spencer Tracy] actually marries the girl that Towne [Robert Young] is depicted as marrying at the end) - the movie covers about 1/3 of the novel by Kenneth Roberts, which is a minor classic. The movie isn't.
