  • mainstream baby...

  • Nice! For those who don't get it, this is a spoof of Jim Cramer and his TV show, "Mad Money" (watch?v=PvsVKDRh7-w). This clip is part of a longer commercial (watch?v=zayZDaISjvQ) produced by Novell, a company which sells Linux-based software.

  • Linux is non main-stream.

I bet there will be no more power users systems by 2020

It's all gonna be thin-clients running a mobile phone OS.

Lion is turning into iOS and I'm sure they'll discontinue the MacPro and Windows 8 uses the Windows phone 7 UI and will run on Systems-on-a-chip devices that can't be upgraded and turn into a piece of shit in 3 years and Google is investing in chromebooks.

When that day comes, programming/linux/open source will be not needed in the main-stream market.

  • @commodore256 Google boy :D That won't happen never. Motorcycles and bycycles never replaced a car, think about it :D

  • not mainstream yet :P

  • @commodore256 Yes, consumers are moving away from desktop computers and are heading to devices. But guess what, Linux is there too.

You mentioned Google's chromebooks, well Google has built all it's O/S's (Chrome OS, Chromium OS & Android) on top of Linux Code.

Oh, & have you checked out whats been happening with MeeGo lately, that's Linux too.

Plus you might want to have a look at what Canonical have been doing to Ubuntu's desktop environment. They too are preparing to move to devices.

  • @endomancer What'the point of Linux being used in Android and ChromeOS?

The Honeycomb version of Dalvik isn't Open Source and ChromeOS is just a browser.

People won't know they're using linux and not care and not know stallman's definition of free software.

Programming in general is going down hill too. Have you seen theses services where you could make an iPhone app and not know a line of code? Have fun making a word processor or an OpenGLES engine using Havok.

  • @commodore256 If it's not open sources, that does not mean it's not linux.

No matter linux or not, fact is no linux - no Android :)

  • @Videotubelord You don't need Linux to run Android Apps, Dalvik (java) is what runs Android apps, you can run any android App on Sparc Solaris without recompiling.

  • @commodore256 i know, but what i wanned to say is that if not linux then Android would never existed because it's made on linux kernel, same with meego and maemo, also most of consumer devices. As for the java - it's universal platform and can run on almost any OS - thats not related to linux at all.
