Sometimes when they sing they have similar voices, but they are both very different and very talented musicians. I love both Regina Spektor and Emmy the Great. :)
Addicted to her wonderful vioce. Got "first love" from on itunes free give away a few weeks ago? Didn't like the beginning so never listened to it much. But I can't stop now xD
I read an article raving about her, but she's a poor man's Regina Spektor-- with only half the voice, a quarter of the musicianship, and none of the playful lyric romantisism.
"No such thing as hope". Best of luck with that dead end-- although it IS very European.
I agree. It was middle class youth that lead the student revolution of the 60's and from whom flowed a great deal of the artistic impulse. Whatever problem someone might have with EtG's music it is most assuredly a matter of style and taste. As far as for the quality of her writing, there are very few that can match her in depth and skill. I hate to resort to saying this but I think she's over a lot of folks's heads. In a good way.
One of the best lyricists melodically and poetically in the trade. I found her in Tilly and the Wall's myspace top 8 in 06'. "Secret Circus" blew me a way. I'd never heard anything quite like that before. The poetry was dense but went well with the music. And she's also a good reason for me to put on my glasses.
I saw her in Vigo three weeks ago 1 hour before the show walking alone.I told to my friend "nice girl"and later she was in the theater singing this lovely music.thanks
I'm as working class as they come, the old man was a docker and all his family were.
I found this and don't see the point of your argument
What are you apppear to say is the working class should not be exposed to this or it will erode their 'Mary Poppins' like charm either that or the working class are too stupid to appreciate music like this.
Everyone is an individual and if you don't realise that it is you who are the elitest.

indeed// not that middle class should be a negative statement - yet this does have the worst aspects of blatantly being some self indulgent stage school kid making dull music..

"over a lot of folks' heads".. oh dear.. get a grip. The only reason you dont like it is because you dont understand it. probably one of the most pathetic things resorted to in internet arguments
where are these regina spektor comparisons coming from?! they are completely different.
but yeah, i agree with the leonard cohen comment, all the beautiful stories she weaves into songs aren't too dissimilar to masterpieces like the stranger song, or one of us cannot be wrong.
she has a tiny hint of Regina Spektor in voice and singing, and she has a little look of Alexa Chung in her, so yeah she sounds good and is hot too :P
I know some people might consider it too much of a leap, but if she reminds me of anyone, it would be someone like Leonard Cohen. Just these amazing lyrics that rise up over everything, the music backing it up doesn't even matter so much...
Her title track for the album she's eventually gonna release is called First Love and it's got 'hallelujahh' in it. As well as the line 'the original leonard cohen version'. It's on youtube. Check it out.
i disagree completely. emmy is damn original . regina and emmy's vocal styling are vastly different . as for the music i suppose one could compare it to regina as well as countless others. regina didnt break the mold and start some revolution. even though i am a huge regina fan .

Emmy should make up her mind about whether she wants to sing or just speak but first and foremost, listen to some Led Zeppelin, Suzanne Vega, Joni Mitchell and Justine Frischmann.
Or, you know, don't. Far too much music these days is derivative in one way or another- people keep trying to imitate the 60s and 70s. Led Zep were a good band (until they went crazy and did massive rambling jam sessions that sound like shit unless you're high), but not everyone has to sound like them to be good.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Well I wouldn't have mentioned Zep if it weren't for the fact that in a recent interview when asked about them, Emmy said they were "pretty".
And that's the kind of mentality that's ruining music. Robert Plant's vocal range transcends time; and the voices of the women I mentioned come close. Emmy's voice doesn't and won't, because just doing something "pretty" is not enough.
Actually I find Robert Plant's wailing annoying sometimes, and wish he'd just carry a damn tune properly, because I know he can, because he does it on other songs. =P Haven't read/heard that interview though, whereabouts was it?
And what's wrong with music being "pretty"? Music is just music! =) Take it too seriously and you get pretty twisted around.
Ultra easy to make, four chords, simple lyrics, no melody, takes 5 seconds to write this kind of music
