I made this quilt using Jenny's technique but I added my batting before I sewed my circle. When I sewed all my circles together my quilt was completed.
I too was thinking of lining the circles with flannel. I did notice that the diamonds are on their sides with this style instead of standing on points. Do you know of any way to do the faux style with them on points?
@Tabascopeppers -you can do it either way. I am making it now and will leave the circles as-is because I love the scalloped edge. But I've seen it squared off and even with a binding!
I love this tutorial! You gals have the best tutorial videos! I was thinking that before sewing all the way around, to make the slit. That way you aren't fussing with it afterwards.

Thank you sew much! I was going to waste my time and do a rag quilt but then when I saw your idea I changed my mind. This is much easier than the way my great gma made hers.
In regard to that slit.... I don't understand how that slit will be hidden, if it is on the portion of the back that is going to be folded over to the front... Please explain.
I made a quilt similar to this and used flannel. It was frayed edge pattern because I used 2 layers of flannel it was heavy and didn't need batting. The technique was the same except that the fabric was stitched right side out. Mary
@Maryg1208 - Love the idea of Flannel!! I am using muslin as "batting" for mine, but the quilt itself has weight to it with just cotton fabric. I was surprised how much weight! I agree with you, batting may be a bit too much.
Wow!! This is so much easier than it looks when you look at the quilt itself. Thanks! I like the idea of just overlapping the circles and not ironing the folds open too.
If you made this bed size, you wouldn't even think of using batting. The weight alone is enough to keep anyone warm. I know... I have one and I live in Minnesota and keep a window open--even at -25! I believe that the Cathedral Windows quilt was thought up to use scraps of fabric and not have to use anything other than muslin for the backing/scalloped edges. I love how the edges on this are finished. No binding! Thanks for a great idea, Jenny.
How would you integrate batting into this pattern? Without batting it would be good as a table cloth but at least a little would be better for a quilt.
@Maryg1208 It is an old pattern called x's & o's It is made with wild flower charm packs by moda and a solid white charm pack. They are available at our shop.
This is fantastic! Idea: since the circles are so large, could photo transfers be on the "inside" of the windows? Seems like you could make a wonderful Memory Quilt this way. Can't wait to try it!!!!
Hi Jenny, I love your Cathedral window quilt!. Looks fun.... Just picking your brains.... would I be able to do it as quilt as you go, sandwich the wadding, turn it around, quilting the squares before sewing the circules together, then start sewing the cirlues together? Let me know what you think.
Since you know where you're going to make your slit to turn the fabric, why not use your rotary cutter to make the slit before you sew the 2 circles together?
Great quilt. I just got one that was made by my grandmother the original way. It is for a twin bed and she sewed it all by hand. You are right I would never make one that way but this would be real easy and fast.

I, too, would find it easier to make the slit before sewing the seams together.

Quick comment--my local quilt store had a class on this style quilt using a Metal circle. I am buying this ruler today, this ruler is SO MUCH EASIER.

When you add the backing, batting & binding, do you leave the scalloped edge as is or you square everything off? This is really beautiful!

Thanks for this nice tutorial, it's very helpful.
I made a picnic cloth using this method. My "backing" fabric is
lots of partially worn-out jeans and the contrasting fabric is
a number of different blue prints. I think next time I'll use red fabrics
with the jeans because although the blues are pretty, there isn't
quite enough contrast with the jeans.

@nyjill Hi, The slit is not on the back it is on the front and will be hidden when you fold the circle over. Have Fun!

I couldn't see if you were going to sew 1/4" on outside of line or on inside, I sort of missed that part about sewing (presser foot)?
