that plug is known as a GBIC or gigabit interface converter... he was showing an example of when a uplink is severed the xmas lights went from white to red to indicate interface was in alarm.

We networking guys are selfish jerks. We care more about the status of the switches management IP than any0 servers that may be attached to it :).
