@ondywasem Thanks for stopping by! Yes, the 5's complement is used when you have to add a number and you don't have enough earth beads to perform the addition. For example, if you have to add 4 and there are already 3 earth beads in use, then you would add 5 (add one heavenly bead) and subtract 1 (take away one earth bead), since 4 = 5 - 1.
I'm planning on putting up some more videos detailing the steps involved in the other arithmetic operations (subtraction, multiplication, division).
@ondywasem About your question of five’s, it’s to save the amount of beads, because most of the country adopted decimal Arabic system and Japanese Soroban does operations in decimal base, each column can represent numbers from 0 to 9. Of course you can create decimal abacus with 9 beads per column instead of 5, but why 9 beads if you can represent by 5 beads.
Actually there are many way to do arithmetic, Binary, Octal, Hexadecimal, Sexagesimal, etc.
