I have lived through disasters similar to this and I can tell you that the behavior of many black Americans was nothing short of shamefull. When hurricane Andrew devastated a huge swath of S. Fl. it was the blacks from the little damaged northern Miami that attempted to prey on the unfortunates in the worst hit areas south of them. This included making blacks, whites, and hispanics a target. Help from the Feds was about a week away. Ah, but Floridians believe in the 2nd A. Bad blacks, bamm!
everyone knows that he wasn't there in their time of need. there is no excuse why he didn't get down there as soon as possible. people throughout the country stepped up to help before he did.. that's saying something.. i went there for 3 weeks last summer & it was depressing to see what that storm did.. all the lives lost.. & i agree, it's not the presidents fault that it happened but it was his responsibility to help fix it.
@mazooo1 ..Bush was here within 3 days. I was here and saw him myself. He tried to talk to Gov Blanco to see what was needed but all she did was cry. Mayor Nagan was huding in his Hilton penthouse and didn't stick his head out for 5 days. And you want to blame Bush? Who is responsible? Blame the lazy's who refuse to do anything for themselves. Blame Mayor Nagin who didn't care because he had a Hilton Penthouse apartment. Blame Gov Blanco who did nothing because she had no clue.
@theviking711 Do not blame Bush for a slow response. If you read my posts of months ago, you would know he was here and did everything possible to give as much as possible. In fact, he did too much. It's the locals, the local & state governments and the local residents who have only themselves to blame for the current conditions there. Most of them have moved on and destroyed things for other areas.
@theviking711 What I mean by that is. I live on the Northshore in St Tammany Parish. We had extensive damage here as well. We didn't lay on our butts expecting someone else to do it. We got to work immediately and started the cleanup and repairs. We were back up and running asap. Most of us also had paid for insurance. That's the kind of folks we are on the Northshore. Maybe I should say were. My next post will explain
@theviking711 I bought my house in '75 and have never locked my doors. I could leave anything in the yard or car with never a worry. Since Katrina and the invasion of people from New Orleans East, the lower ninth ward and St Bernard, I have steel doors witrh dead bolt locks on my home, a camera system, 2 dogs andf I keep my guns loaded. The cops are always next door, there are pit bulls running loose in the streets and drugs all over. We never had that before.
@theviking711 So while we pay for insurance, & pay for all the Katrina aide for those who didn't, we pay because our parish has changed very negatively. it is no longer the beautiful St Tammany. It has become an extension of lower 9th ward, St Bernard, & N O East. However, while our way of life has been destroyed by the aftermath of Katrins, there's nothing we can do. Insurance nor federal programs will help with that.
this is a very sad video.. & i also read the comments.. whether you liked bush or not eveyone knows he wasn't there when they need him the most.. yeah people chose to stay.. it was their home! i wouldn't leave mine! so many people lost their homes, their families, their lives. i am from iowa so i guess i don't have a lot of room to talk about what the people down there went through but i did spend three weeks down there last summer & the devastation is still there. it breaks my heart to think

@mazooo1 The devastation is still there because the feds did too much in giving them money to stay all over the country instead of coming back to help clean up their homes and neighborhoods. Too many locals leave everything up to others to do it all. They want someone else to pick them up, take care of them, fix the damage & bring them back to something new. Ridiculous!
The US Government did NOT cause the hurricane that hit NOLA! People knew for weeks it was coming! Did the Government cause the tornadoes and floods in Iowa the last two years? NO! Did we cry for help? NO! Did we cry about it? NO! We rolled up out sleeves and cleaned up and took care of ourselves. What is Nashville doing now? Are they blaming the Government for the floods? NO! Who is to blame for these NATURAL disasters? The Government? NO!
blame it on the power mongers of state and local gov't. and the idealistic electorate. while you were attending your a.c.l.u. rallies i was attending o.e.p.( fire, police, e.m.s. and uscg) briefings. nobody likes to admit when they're wrong, but grow up.
I saw this video and it was like a video of the twin towers. To be honest you should just be glad that you werent killed in that storm or you still wake up in the morning...Those people that died are in heaven or hell....Thank you unsung1984 the video was great...I am not mad with anyone, and you yall shouldnt be either....be thankful you are still alive...
These people were total idiots. They were told DOZENS of times to get out and they did not. What the hell was their problem. FREE transportation, FREE meals and a FREE place to stay during the storm and they did not leave... total idiots.
exactly right. I was in N. O. before this happened and I quit my job and just left. I saw how it would work and refused to go back. I am just a poor steel worker and so were all the people working at Avandale shipyard. I left. They didn't. they suffered and I got a job in California. It took me half an hour to load up all my things and hit the road. Sucks to be stupid huh and not see what's coming.
These people were warned to leave before the hurricane hit. If you didnt have a car then you should have walked and hitched your way out. no excuses!!!
What a disgusting ignorant comment. Look up something about social class in America. Simple question: why were the patients at the private hospitals airlifted and removed immediately while the clinic patients were left to die? Why were the rich protected by private security mercenaries while the poor were left in chaos?
Because, Free market works. The public hospitals are run by the government and everyone knows the government doesn't care. The rich were not protected. They were herded out of thier homes at gunpoint.
Creating a video about suffering Americans after a major natural disaster only to show your own personal opinion about President Bush is disgusting sir.
Actually it is affective when the leadership of this country slept while people (poor people) died. Their suffering is on their hands and should never be forgotten or forgiven.
um excuse me Chownings...what about those that had no where to run. U might have a roof on top of ur head and technology out the ass, but what about those that have nothing. Sometimes u should think before u represent ignorance on a worldwide website. GOD BLESS
@cwflet01 These people were total idiots. They were told DOZENS of times to get out and they did not. What the hell was their problem. FREE transportation, FREE meals and a FREE place to stay during the storm and they did not leave... total idiots.
I feel very sorry for these people who ignored repeated warnings to leave the city and put their lives in jeopardy. These idiots will not listen on where to go but will run for a government check. Not sorry at all.
You are a racist troll. Ignorant of any rationale thought. Go take a college class on sociology. Or how about you get out of the house and see the world around. Keep living blind it allows you to consume consume consume with no worry about anyone else. You are the problem with this country not the people you are denigrating.
Please help me understand why anything I said could be construed as racist? I live in this world by using common sense, something most of the residents used before the hurricane came. Those that stayed behind are the problem.
For the record, I'm black and I have a minor in sociology.
The only reason you think its bullshit Goldiney is cause you didnt see it on the news and you didnt see it on the news cause you were to busy watch fucken CNN and MSNBC.This was all on fox you dumb bastard try fucken waken up watching the correct news people this is what happened and its sad.
I was watching CNN and MSNBC? lol ... child ... I am a Republican and watch nothing but the only news network - FOX. I listen to Rush, Hannity and Humphries. This video just happens to be complete and utter bullshit.
"The Spirit of Louisiana" has weakened but not failed and it is because we had each other to depend on when pieces of shit resembling a whole lot like you didn't feel like we were worth it. Rest assured that the Big Easy will rise again.
Statistically, you're devastating viewpoint is a probable 1:10 ratio. Calculate that for a moment will you? Who will mourn the loss of you or of what you cherish most? How do you plan on getting back every item you once owned with no money and unaccessablity to return to your city because you're identification perished along side the rest?
In a very restricted sense, I'm apologetic that you are unaware of the powerful impact of being apart of something beyond you. It is those like you that make America have such a negative connotation. You should use your... immense passions to do something in society. To help, motivate, to survive and inspire. Sitting at home being ignorant and hiding behind a computer screen means you will always remain invisible.
It's an awful, embarrassing, desparate situation to be forced to turn to outside help for assistance in survival. Better yet, watching their backs turn because it wasn't where they lived so it wasn't their problem.
I hope that you never watch the place, the only place you can consider home never rebuild because of empty campaign promises. I hope that your securities in life remain untouched as my birthplace will never exsist to the magnitude as before that day.
Hours and hours dialing the same numbers hoping that whereever they made it to that they were alive. Now, imagine that intensity. You're not worried about a single individual being in despair. YOU HAVE NO IDEA IF EVERYONE IN YOUR LIFE IS ALIVE. I hope that you never have to leave you're hometown and return to it in shambles, that you never have to choose between all items you own by which ones you simply don't have to heart to part from.
I hope that you never have to experience something like August 2005. You should be more grateful than hateful. I hope that you may always be near the ones you love; accordingly I wish that in emergencies that loved ones will only be a call away. Of course you would know that the phone lines in Louisiana were destroyed multiple days after Katrina had subsided, right?
Would you have responded to the same to 9/11, as if there's any difference to these tragedies? Two incidents where a man-made structure's weakness (the steel frame of the twin towers and the instability in the levees) killed thousands of innocents and corrupted the lives of innumerous??
Yes, tradgic. Same as 9/11? Hardly. far from it. 9/11 had no idea that was going to happen. Katrina was on path and people were told NUMEROUS times to evacuate. Who did? The emergency bus drivers did! What is there video of? Police women looting wal-mart with the rest of the group. Looters shooting at rescure helicopters. I donated a quarter to Katrina victims...call someone who cares. Deplorable behavoir beyond imagination...women getting raped in the drome. Fix your own dang house.
New Orleans, as with all of south Louisiana, is a remarkable place to be raised in. Whereas in other parts of the country the focal point is hate,- which seems to be a category you fit into- I'm honored to say that I had the privledge of being influenced by a culture of compassion, music, life and a vibrance of heritage and pride. There's an evergrowing unification in our history, our heritage, and now our pain.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
This is a cool video, but you pissed all over it by turning it into a political attack. You took a very uplifting beautiful video and ruined it by injecting petty hatred.
Uno25, You seem to have misunderstood my comment about Bush not landing. He was asked NOT to land because the security every prez is REQUIRED to have would have interferred wiith evacuations. And the photo of him on the plane was not staged. The press always flies with every prez. Many pics were taken but the Bush bashers ran amok with that one and claimed it showed he was unconcerned. In reality, he was shocked at the devastation and disappointed that he could not land to offer comfort & help.
I repeat what said before, who is responsible for me? I am. I pay for insurance so you will never have to fix my house or buy me a car. I plan for storms and act when they come so you will never endanger your life trying to rescue me. I have no problem helping others, but I do get tired of people not trying to help themselves,
All of these comments have not mentioned the people who are better off than they were before. They were too cheap to pay for insurance but were 1st in line to take advantage of the money and programs to help Katrina victims. So I pay for insurance and pay to fix houses for others who didn't pay for insurance. Many of these live is better houses than mine, but I get to pay for them. Many spent the money buy big new expensive SUVS. One brags about her breast implants, compliments of Katrina
That is my biggest complaint about the whole thing. Too many do nothing and wait for others to do it all. Then they complain about what they get not being enough. Who is responsible for me? I AM.
Not you, not the president, me! I will say, this was the worst disaster ever to hit the planet. No one expected the damage that was done. Bush did not cause it. Nature did. The whole world responded and still people complain.
Everyone does need to plan and act when a storm comes. I do. I make sure I have water food cash, gas, flashlight w/ batteries, etc. In 1965 I didn't have resourses so I learned where shelters would open and went there. No bus, no car,no money, but safe shelter. Shelters open before storms arrive and stay open until danger has passed. Agencies are prepared to transport the eldery, needy, and disabled when called upon. BUT THEY HAVE TO CALL FOR HELP. THE ABLE NEED TO GET UP AND GO TO THE SHELTER
Bush called Blanco to tell her the resourses of the US were at her disposal, what did she need. Her reply was "Everything". He said exactly what did she need, again, everything. She was confused and nearly incoherant. He flew again to Baton Rouge to meet with her in private to find out was needed. Nothing could get into the city because of 14 ft of water. When he sent rescue choppers in, they were shot at from the ground. The city was not prepared.
I'm sure some folks will be angered, even offended by my comments here. I am just so sick of all the Bush/FEMA/government bashing over Katrina. I do fault Gov Blanco (a worthless gov if ever there was one) & Mayor Nagin, who didn't stick his head out of his penthouse suite at the Hilton for 5 days. I am also tired of all the lazy stupids who do not listen to evacuation orders but endanger the lives of the brave people who must go to reccue them.
Obviously you haven't spent much time in New Orleans...You should ask the question where was the presidental support on day 1? I know he "showed up late" but lets not give him a "security risk excuse." After this is tha same man who went to Ground Zero on Day 1...Was was he scared of? a few looters? Doing something productive? not causing a war? You seem like an intellegent person....Why cover for Bushs' ignorance?....I haven't met a Republican yet that is proud that they voted for him...
I've been in NO since 1965, Remember Betsy & Camille & several others. Bush was here on day 2 after Katrina. N.O. airport was closed to all traffic except evacuations. I am Rep & proud of my vote for him. Nagin did not stick his face out of his penthouse suite at the Hilton for 5 days. Go. Blanco, "unexperienced?" She was born and raised here in hurricane land. Bush could not possibly know what eve4ry one of his 50 states have on hand to deal with catasrophes.
wat700son, you are not quite right there. Evacuation shelters for everyone who need them are opened well in advance of every approaching storm they are free & open to the public. If you are disabled you call any of several organizations who will provide assisrance to get there. However, YOU DO HAVE TO MAKE THE CALL OR GET OFF YOUR BACKSIDE AND GET THERE. You do need to bring your own food, medicine, pillow and blanket. That's not to much to ask is it?
You really believe that everyone had the means to leave New Orleans? That is not the case...New Orleans is nothing like the rest of the world....Every bus in this city would not have been enough to transport....this is why our city needed our president....and he failed...We will never forgive him for that...Nagin didn't plan enough...but he was here on Day 1....Blanco was just inexperienced and didn't request what she needed to request.....Bush failed miserably...States helped each other...
@theviking711 it is if you dont have money to afford a phone to make the call, money to purchase food, or pay for your prescriptions, if you cant afford luxuries like pillows and blankets. Many people even today still only own the clothes on their backs and that is because they found what others discarded. I dont see you offering up your resources to help them. I am a minimalist, both while in the woods and in daily life. I freely give anything that I do not need to survive. I use library comps.
@Caveman0713 . You know nothing about me. I am a senior citizen, widowed and survive on soc sec & a part time job in a gas station. I had 15 evacuees in my small home for months after Katrina. I still have one who is disabled. One must make their own choices and be prepared to live with the results. I choose to work & provide for my needs. I am forced to pay for others by higher taxes, fees on my phone so they can have free phones, etc. How much more do you expect me to give?
@theviking711 I wasn't singling you out, expecting you to pay for EVERYONE. I was simply commenting on your remark that people CHOSE to die by not going to the relief centers. And that all they had to do was supply their own supplies. There were people before katrina that couldn't afford to make a toll free phone call. My family and I sent over 30 cargo boxes full of clothing and supplies directly to katrina victims. We bypassed Fema because they are ineffective. Give all that isn't necessity.
Part 5 I could go on but I have said enough. Bush was here also, The photo showing him flying was taken on when he was not allowed because people were still being evacuated and the security would have interferred with that. When he was able to land late, he was very distraught to tears by what he saw. I know, I was there. Federal money was sent immediately to all who needed and requested it. A horrible disaster but like earthquakes & tornados it's was not the fault of the government or Bush.
What else do you know about that picture?.....because I know the person that shot it....and I can assure you that it was COMPLETELY staged....there are atleast 50 different versions...Bush coming here late was a political move...Bush going to Ground Zero on Day 1 was heart felt...His advisors saw that his popularity was plumiting..Even FOX News reported that the Bushs' response to Katrina was slow and without substance...You really can't win this argument. Bush was parting and playing the guitar
Uno25, It looks like I also misunderstood you. You mention argument. What argument? I thought this comment section was for giving opinion and open discussion of the subject matter like adults do & not argue like children. My intent is not to argue but give the other side of the story. Katrina was a disaster, but many would have fared much better if only they had tried to take responsibility for themselves and not expected others to take care of them.
@rgsrobertg ..No changing anything. I was here. I did not leave & have knowlege of what happened here during that time. I wrote what I saw and lived. Would you prefer I say something different?
part 4 Walmart sent in semi's full of emergency supplies and gave them to anyone who wanted. Animal control saved as many animals as possible. Noah's Wish gave free vetinary care & pet boarding to all who needed help. Home Depot, Sam's & walMart flew in workers from all over the US to get the stores open and functioning without power & under very difficult conditions. They provided shade, food and wated to all who wanted it. A cruise line turned a ship over to the 1st responders to live in .
Did you see the cargo plan in the video? That was the first plane to deliver supplies via aircraft. It came from China. Did you see Bush playing the guitar while people were rotting in the streets? That's is true...Him and the maverick were parting while my people were dying. What about the press conference when the press secretary was reminded, at the end of a briefing, by a reporter, to explain what the president is doing to help the gulf coast.....Press Sec gave an embarassing BS answer....
Part 3..I did not evacuate because my area was safe. I Lost electricity, phone, & calbe but did not flood.THE DAY AFTER KATRINA, I was on the I-12 and saw a never ending line of repair trucks for power & phone rolling in. I also saw Fema, faith-based agencies, every insurance co imaginable, Red Cross, in that line. Repairs were started that day, Same day Fema set up well organized stations for dispense food, water, ice, bedding. Red Cross set up hot meals and medical care.
Part 2..The world responded & many came & risked their lives to help those that remained. They evacuated as many as possible. The area is still in trouble because most of the ones who didn't help themselves before are still laying around on the taxpayers dime, bemoaning their fate, claiming they can't return because there is no place to live. But they don't return to help provide livable spaces. They wait for someone else to do it. Then & only then will they return. (P S I don't want them.)
I live in Louisiana and know well what happened during & after Katrina. We were warned several days in advance about the approching storm. There was plenty of time to evacuate. Most did. Those that didn't were the die hards that ignore the warning & stay to protect their possessions. Or those that will not do anything for themselves but lay around expecting others to do everything for them. Both groups are fools.
those lazy fuckers could have walked out of there they had plenty of warning... they had legs ad they had many other ways of getting out but they stayed to loot and rape
People need money to leave an area, they need transportation-it's expensive to just up and leave. They need money for lodgeing, money for food, money for gas, money for any particular's that might come up. The moral of the story is that people in poverty die when there's a disaster and they're not ushered to safety quickly. It's an American SHAME!
@SweetKooshy And instead of using the buses to evacuate people from the city, Mayor Nagin choose to evacuate the buses and left those in the city to fend for themselves and he had plenty of warning as well.
This is just my presonal opinion so I hope this dose'nt make any one mad. I think this happen because GOD wanted to get these people attenion in this Part of the Country.there were so much SIN there.
This is amazing...I wish this brought America together more though because it seemed like it drove us all apart...my heart goes out to all of the familes that went through this. Never take for granted anything you have man...
Americans say "they are the most powerful country." now don't take this the wrong way, I live in America. But still.... If nature can cause so much damage are we really such a strong nation???
There's a thing called HAARP, a satellite capable of generating tornadoes, earthquakes, & other natural disasters. This technology came from Nicola Tesla. Why do you think it only happens in places where the majority of the population's ethnicity is of no interest to the elite? Our government is corrupt
Was I talking about end times? Were these people warned of these danger zones before it hit their area? No I don't think so. Maybe if you read something and not take the media's extorted word for what happens outside your little box you call home, you'll realize there's more people out there who have more truth to tell than what is handed to you. So don't be lazy and pretend it's a wonderful world of protected sheep guarded by uncorrupted shepherds. Sheep eventually get led to the slaughter.
World has a love/hate thing with US which is never easy to understand, full of contradictions & so complex often beyond comprehension. Love of freedom & liberty in a culture of have & have nots; world wars fought for peace yet liberty is limited by guns & violence; equality of justice but OJ; land of opportunity unless you're on the wrong side of a class divide (in Watts, Harlem); wealth created by cheap labor but hate of "illegals"; fear of socialism yet banks & corporate America get bailouts!
Americans proclaim they're the greatest country on earth, yet look at the poverty not only in New Orleans, but in many urban centers in the US. Is it any wonder that Cuba has a lower infant mortality rate than the US, which has a rate matching that of 3rd world countries. So much for being the world's greatest. More than anything else, the disaster in New Orleans reflects a cruel social-political reality in the US.
What gets me is when I hear Americans buying what the president says, like a bunch of Forest Gumps, "Well if Bush says the Iraq War is about our freedom, it must be so." You kiddin' me? We're no better than anyone else but the Canadian prime minister is just a politician. And if he screws up too often his term in office can end if put to a "vote of no confidence" in the House. Different system but how did Bush get elected a 2nd term after starting the War in Iraq? His old man only got one term!
HI, I saw this video for the first time-My oldest went through Katrina-They ended up @ the Can co. in town..On the roof . My wife is from there and some of my in-laws lost everything but most important, thier lives were saved. Being from NEw England, we opened our home up to the family, for months they stayed-I lived there myself for sometime and I hope and pray that special spirit of New Orleans returned or will return-it is like nothing else anywhere. For you and your family-bless you all...
The name of the song is Sarah Beth by Rascal Flatts. It's about a girl with cancer...I just added the George Bush/Katrina angle. Thanks for being honest!
I was just in New Orleans and having just toured the lower ninth ward what a somber expierence seeing those x marks all over the houses and realising the full scale of that damage
Very powerful. I almost did not keep watching, but then I could not stop. I still cannot imagine what those people went through and are still going through...
Thanks for checking this video out! I seems so long ago that I scrambled up all the photos for this video. Years from now I hope people have the same reaction that you did. That was my goal! Thank you again!
Thanks so much! I am so glad people actually respond in a positive way! I didn't expect such a positive response! From major news reporters to young youtubers everyone feels something when they watch this video. Thanks for watching! I hope Americans never get abandoned by our Commander-n-Chief again.
Beautiful. That's the best word I can find for this. I miss home so much, and don't you worry, I'll be back, but I'm glad you made this video. It helps me, and I'm sure many many others, cope with losing home.
Thanks Shelby! Your comment was absolutely BEAUTIFUL! New Orleans is awaiting your arrival. See you in the studio soon. This video was featured on a Chicago News channel...The emails that I received were incredible.
I lived in New Orleans when katrina hit and this video breaks my heart to see so many of the locals from my city we hurt and suffered soo much :( when i saw the leeves breaak on tv all I could do was cry and watch my city i love soo much go under water
Thanks Monica... I still live in New Orleans and it's getting back to normal for about 75% of people. The other 25% were expected make perform a miracle with small amounts of money from the government. Imagine having no home, no job, a family, no hope....The President didn't even act like he was going to help this small group of people. (small...when you look at the big picture...) It's not to late to take care of the people who need it the most....( the people living under the bridge)
yah it was really a somber expierence I was just there this is the first time I really saw it all for real up close and not in a book very sad seeing what was on some of those X marks on the homes very sad..God Bless New Orleans for trying to recover from that
Thanks for the comment. Most of the people that I know in new orleans are better off now then they were before Katrina. The people that actually need assistance are slipping throught the cracks. Depending on who's name the house was in...some people never make it pass the initial road-home interview.
Brooke I've been so busy with Regis & Kelly which is going to be live from New Orleans tomorrow morning that I am a little late on my replies. I am OK and doing great! Thanks for keeping in touch.
This by far has been the abseloute best video I've ever seen on youtube. I have just one favor to ask you, can you make a video dedicated to the thousands of people who lost their lives in the 911 attack. I've tried many times to do it myself, but for some reason always click the x before ic an finish. I feel it's meaningless coming from me.
Brooke, that was the biggest, most heart felt, compliment that I've ever gotten about this video. Thank you so much. I will consider doing a 9/11 tribute. My style is to give a song new meaning through images and controlled editing. So first I have to have the perfect song. I can't begin to explain how good your comments make me feel. Thanks again Brooke.
I am from New Orleans...I live and work in New Orleans...Everyone has there own story about how they were treated in the days following Katrina. If you were stuck in this city for 7-14 days with bodies decaying around you, your story would start with my video. Your President should know better. Thanks for the honest response.
Thanks Miranda! I am always pleased to read viewer's comments. I'm glad you took something with you from this video. It all makes sense...That's what makes this video different from the other Katrina videos. Every cut was well thought out.
Hi Jessica! Thank you for your reply! When it's all said and done this video will stand the test of time. It's one of those videos you end up watching over and over. Thanks again.
Thanks for the comment. Every time I watch the video I see something else that I didn't notice before. It's short and to the point...with no wasted shots. I'm glad you enjoyed it. I'm even more elated that you sent me your thoughts.
I played this video before I gave a presentation at UNO (Univ. of N.O.) and everyone was so emotional. I just wanted to get the truth out in my own way. Thanks again Jess.
Thank you Jess! I must say that your comment feels so ginuine! I can feel the love. I tried to tell the story with my frantic/calm editing technique. I am so pleased that your heart was touched by this video.
I have to admit...it was very hard to think this video through...cut by cut. This video will stand the test of time. That's what I was shooting for. Again thank you for your honest remarks.
I tried to be as descriptive as I could without going overboard. I edited out pics involving stray animals and abandoned bodies because it made the video hard to watch. Thanks for being honest about your experience.
It's hard for me to watch at times as well...I left out a lot of grotesque pics...involving stray animals and abandoned bodies...I still think that I included a good mix. I wanted this video to be as descriptive as it could be, without grossing out viewers.
haven't anyone notice this was made on " April 1st " ?

@mazooo1 ..Bush was here within 3 days. I was here and saw him myself. He tried to talk to Gov Blanco to see what was needed but all she did was cry. Mayor Nagan was huding in his Hilton penthouse and didn't stick his head out for 5 days. And you want to blame Bush? Who is responsible? Blame the lazy's who refuse to do anything for themselves. Blame Mayor Nagin who didn't care because he had a Hilton Penthouse apartment. Blame Gov Blanco who did nothing because she had no clue.
theviking711 1 year ago
@theviking711 Do not blame Bush for a slow response. If you read my posts of months ago, you would know he was here and did everything possible to give as much as possible. In fact, he did too much. It's the locals, the local & state governments and the local residents who have only themselves to blame for the current conditions there. Most of them have moved on and destroyed things for other areas.
theviking711 1 year ago
@theviking711 What I mean by that is. I live on the Northshore in St Tammany Parish. We had extensive damage here as well. We didn't lay on our butts expecting someone else to do it. We got to work immediately and started the cleanup and repairs. We were back up and running asap. Most of us also had paid for insurance. That's the kind of folks we are on the Northshore. Maybe I should say were. My next post will explain
theviking711 1 year ago
@theviking711 I bought my house in '75 and have never locked my doors. I could leave anything in the yard or car with never a worry. Since Katrina and the invasion of people from New Orleans East, the lower ninth ward and St Bernard, I have steel doors witrh dead bolt locks on my home, a camera system, 2 dogs andf I keep my guns loaded. The cops are always next door, there are pit bulls running loose in the streets and drugs all over. We never had that before.
theviking711 1 year ago
@theviking711 So while we pay for insurance, & pay for all the Katrina aide for those who didn't, we pay because our parish has changed very negatively. it is no longer the beautiful St Tammany. It has become an extension of lower 9th ward, St Bernard, & N O East. However, while our way of life has been destroyed by the aftermath of Katrins, there's nothing we can do. Insurance nor federal programs will help with that.

NO!

What a disgusting ignorant comment. Look up something about social class in America. Simple question: why were the patients at the private hospitals airlifted and removed immediately while the clinic patients were left to die? Why were the rich protected by private security mercenaries while the poor were left in chaos?
unsung1984 2 years ago
Because, Free market works. The public hospitals are run by the government and everyone knows the government doesn't care. The rich were not protected. They were herded out of thier homes at gunpoint.

How satisfying to think how superior we are to the idiots who stayed behind.
Consider:
1. Many of those who stayed behind did not have homeowners insurance,
2. Many of the people who stayed lived in areas where an evacuation posed a distinct fear of looting.
3. The storm hit on August 29 and many who lived on Social Security or pensions did not have a spare dime.
The vast majority of people who evacuate will do so needlessly, when viewed in hindsight. Maybe you would have stayed too.

I have no problem helping others, but I do get tired of people not trying to help themselves,
theviking711 2 years ago
All of these comments have not mentioned the people who are better off than they were before. They were too cheap to pay for insurance but were 1st in line to take advantage of the money and programs to help Katrina victims. So I pay for insurance and pay to fix houses for others who didn't pay for insurance. Many of these live is better houses than mine, but I get to pay for them. Many spent the money buy big new expensive SUVS. One brags about her breast implants, compliments of Katrina
theviking711 2 years ago
That is my biggest complaint about the whole thing. Too many do nothing and wait for others to do it all. Then they complain about what they get not being enough. Who is responsible for me? I AM.
Not you, not the president, me! I will say, this was the worst disaster ever to hit the planet. No one expected the damage that was done. Bush did not cause it. Nature did. The whole world responded and still people complain.
theviking711 2 years ago
Everyone does need to plan and act when a storm comes. I do. I make sure I have water food cash, gas, flashlight w/ batteries, etc. In 1965 I didn't have resourses so I learned where shelters would open and went there. No bus, no car,no money, but safe shelter. Shelters open before storms arrive and stay open until danger has passed. Agencies are prepared to transport the eldery, needy, and disabled when called upon. BUT THEY HAVE TO CALL FOR HELP. THE ABLE NEED TO GET UP AND GO TO THE SHELTER
theviking711 2 years ago
Bush called Blanco to tell her the resourses of the US were at her disposal, what did she need. Her reply was "Everything". He said exactly what did she need, again, everything. She was confused and nearly incoherant. He flew again to Baton Rouge to meet with her in private to find out was needed. Nothing could get into the city because of 14 ft of water. When he sent rescue choppers in, they were shot at from the ground. The city was not prepared.
theviking711 2 years ago
I'm sure some folks will be angered, even offended by my comments here. I am just so sick of all the Bush/FEMA/government bashing over Katrina. I do fault Gov Blanco (a worthless gov if ever there was one) & Mayor Nagin, who didn't stick his head out of his penthouse suite at the Hilton for 5 days. I am also tired of all the lazy stupids who do not listen to evacuation orders but endanger the lives of the brave people who must go to reccue them.
theviking711 2 years ago
Obviously you haven't spent much time in New Orleans...You should ask the question where was the presidental support on day 1? I know he "showed up late" but lets not give him a "security risk excuse." After this is tha same man who went to Ground Zero on Day 1...Was was he scared of? a few looters? Doing something productive? not causing a war? You seem like an intellegent person....Why cover for Bushs' ignorance?....I haven't met a Republican yet that is proud that they voted for him...
uno25 2 years ago
I've been in NO since 1965, Remember Betsy & Camille & several others. Bush was here on day 2 after Katrina. N.O. airport was closed to all traffic except evacuations. I am Rep & proud of my vote for him. Nagin did not stick his face out of his penthouse suite at the Hilton for 5 days. Go. Blanco, "unexperienced?" She was born and raised here in hurricane land. Bush could not possibly know what eve4ry one of his 50 states have on hand to deal with catasrophes.
theviking711 2 years ago
wat700son, you are not quite right there. That's not to much to ask is it?
theviking711 2 years ago 2
You really believe that everyone had the means to leave New Orleans? That is not the case...New Orleans is nothing like the rest of the world....Every bus in this city would not have been enough to transport....this is why our city needed our president....and he failed...We will never forgive him for that...Nagin didn't plan enough...but he was here on Day 1....Blanco was just inexperienced and didn't request what she needed to request.....Bush failed miserably...States helped each other...
uno25 2 years ago
@theviking711 it is if you dont have money to afford a phone to make the call, money to purchase food, or pay for your prescriptions, if you cant afford luxuries like pillows and blankets. Many people even today still only own the clothes on their backs and that is because they found what others discarded. I dont see you offering up your resources to help them. I am a minimalist, both while in the woods and in daily life. I freely give anything that I do not need to survive. I use library comps.
Caveman0713 1 year ago
@Caveman0713 . You know nothing about me. I am a senior citizen, widowed and survive on soc sec & a part time job in a gas station. I had 15 evacuees in my small home for months after Katrina. I still have one who is disabled. One must make their own choices and be prepared to live with the results. I choose to work & provide for my needs. I am forced to pay for others by higher taxes, fees on my phone so they can have free phones, etc. How much more do you expect me to give?
theviking711 1 year ago
@theviking711 I wasn't singling you out, expecting you to pay for EVERYONE. I was simply commenting on your remark that people CHOSE to die by not going to the relief centers. And that all they had to do was supply their own supplies. There were people before katrina that couldn't afford to make a toll free phone call. My family and I sent over 30 cargo boxes full of clothing and supplies directly to katrina victims. We bypassed Fema because they are ineffective. Give all that isn't necessity.
Caveman0713 1 year ago
Part 5 I could go on but I have said enough. Bush was here also, The photo showing him flying was taken on when he was not allowed because people were still being evacuated and the security would have interferred with that. When he was able to land late, he was very distraught to tears by what he saw. I know, I was there. Federal money was sent immediately to all who needed and requested it. A horrible disaster but like earthquakes & tornados it's was not the fault of the government or Bush.
theviking711 2 years ago 2
What else do you know about that picture?.....because I know the person that shot it....and I can assure you that it was COMPLETELY staged....there are atleast 50 different versions...Bush coming here late was a political move...Bush going to Ground Zero on Day 1 was heart felt...His advisors saw that his popularity was plumiting..Even FOX News reported that the Bushs' response to Katrina was slow and without substance...You really can't win this argument. Bush was parting and playing the guitar
uno25 2 years ago
Uno25, It looks like I also misunderstood you. You mention argument. What argument? I thought this comment section was for giving opinion and open discussion of the subject matter like adults do & not argue like children. My intent is not to argue but give the other side of the story. Katrina was a disaster, but many would have fared much better if only they had tried to take responsibility for themselves and not expected others to take care of them.

part 4 Walmart sent in semi's full of emergency supplies and gave them to anyone who wanted. Animal control saved as many animals as possible. Noah's Wish gave free vetinary care & pet boarding to all who needed help. Home Depot, Sam's & walMart flew in workers from all over the US to get the stores open and functioning without power & under very difficult conditions. Red Cross set up hot meals and medical care.
theviking711 2 years ago
Part 2..The world responded & many came & risked their lives to help those that remained. They evacuated as many as possible. The area is still in trouble because most of the ones who didn't help themselves before are still laying around on the taxpayers dime, bemoaning their fate, claiming they can't return because there is no place to live. But they don't return to help provide livable spaces. They wait for someone else to do it. Then & only then will they return. (P S I don't want them.)
theviking711 2 years ago
I live in Louisiana and know well what happened during & after Katrina. We were warned several days in advance about the approching storm. There was plenty of time to evacuate. Most did. Those that didn't were the die hards that ignore the warning & stay to protect their possessions.

Love of freedom & liberty in a culture of have & have nots; world wars fought for peace yet liberty is limited by guns & violence; equality of justice but OJ; land of opportunity unless you're on the wrong side of a class divide (in Watts, Harlem); wealth created by cheap labor but hate of "illegals"; fear of socialism yet banks & corporate America get bailouts!

ontcan1: precisely stated. America is the definition of an oxymoron
wat700son 2 years ago
Americans proclaim they're the greatest country on earth, yet look at the poverty not only in New Orleans, but in many urban centers in the US. Is it any wonder that Cuba has a lower infant mortality rate than the US, which has a rate matching that of 3rd world countries. So much for being the world's greatest. More than anything else, the disaster in New Orleans reflects a cruel social-political reality in the US.

Can't argue with that, facts are facts.

His old man only got one term!

its been orchestrated like its always been done,.. the elections were fake ,.. america was sleeping at that time..

Wow they all look black. Is Obama black or Mixed. 90% of the victoms of Newoleans were on Goverment Programs befor the tragic event.
One lady was asked why she stay. She Replied "I was waiting for my wellfair check". Blame the people. Not one man.

Obama is he black or white? The New MJ song in Stores now. Also with his hit I want to be a Priest.
Sanemaxx2000 2 years ago
It does not matter if he is black or white. I dislike the man for his policies.
But if you must know, he is half black and half white.

For you and your family-bless you all...

i think that ppl should quit building homes in New Orleans cuz the same thing will keep on happening to those poor people. God Bless

wuts the name of that song it is so touching
UTUBEHOTTIE109 3 years ago
The name of the song is Sarah Beth by Rascal Flatts. It's about a girl with cancer...I just added the George Bush/Katrina angle. Thanks for being honest!

I was just in New Orleans and having just toured the lower ninth ward what a somber expierence seeing those x marks all over the houses and realising the full scale of that damage
gaycowboy31 3 years ago
Very powerful. I almost did not keep watching, but then I could not stop. I still cannot imagine what those people went through and are still going through...
kakwalker 3 years ago
Thanks for checking this video out! I seems so long ago that I scrambled up all the photos for this video. Years from now I hope people have the same reaction that you did. That was my goal! Thank you again!
uno25 3 years ago
You are welcome. It really is a powerful message. I know many of those people still need help. I wish I could do something...

God Bless,
Shelby.

Thanks Shelby! Your comment was absolutely BEAUTIFUL! New Orleans is awaiting your arrival. See you in the studio soon. This video was featured on a Chicago News channel...The emails that I received were incredible.

I lived in New Orleans when katrina hit and this video breaks my heart to see so many of the locals from my city we hurt and suffered soo much :( when i saw the leeves breaak on tv all I could do was cry and watch my city i love soo much go under water
msmonicabrooks 3 years ago
Thanks Monica... I still live in New Orleans and it's getting back to normal for about 75% of people. The other 25% were expected make perform a miracle with small amounts of money from the government. Imagine having no home, no job, a family, no hope....The President didn't even act like he was going to help this small group of people. (small...when you look at the big picture...) It's not to late to take care of the people who need it the most....( the people living under the bridge)
uno25 3 years ago
yah it was really a somber expierence I was just there this is the first time I really saw it all for real up close and not in a book very sad seeing what was on some of those X marks on the homes very sad..God Bless New Orleans for trying to recover from that
gaycowboy31 3 years ago
thanks for uploading this video..i felt sorry for the N.O. victims..
jakks024 4 years ago
Thanks for the comment. Most of the people that I know in new orleans are better off now then they were before Katrina. The people that actually need assistance are slipping throught the cracks. Depending on who's name the house was in...some people never make it pass the initial road-home interview.

brookesanchez 4 years ago
Brooke I've been so busy with Regis & Kelly which is going to be live from New Orleans tomorrow morning that I am a little late on my replies. I am OK and doing great! Thanks for keeping in touch.
uno25 4 years ago
Thank you. But truly I ment what I said, I may only be 11 years old but that was the biggest most heart felt video i have ever seen.
brookesanchez 4 years ago
This by far has been the abseloute best video I've ever seen on youtube. I have just one favor to ask you, can you make a video dedicated to the thousands of people who lost their lives in the 911 attack. I've tried many times to do it myself, but for some reason always click the x before ic an finish. I feel it's meaningless coming from me.
brookesanchez 4 years ago
Brooke, that was the biggest, most heart felt, compliment that I've ever gotten about this video. Thank you so much. I will consider doing a 9/11 tribute. My style is to give a song new meaning through images and controlled editing. So first I have to have the perfect song. I can't begin to explain how good your comments make me feel. Thanks again Brooke.

this is such bullmess and anyone from the area knows better.

I am from New Orleans...I live and work in New Orleans...Everyone has there own story about how they were treated in the days following Katrina. If you were stuck in this city for 7-14 days with bodies decaying around you, your story would start with my video. Your President should know better. Thanks for the honest response.

Thanks for the comment. Every time I watch the video I see something else that I didn't notice before. It's short and to the point...with no wasted shots. I'm glad you enjoyed it. I'm even more elated that you sent me your thoughts.

its a great song and video.

Thank you so much Lizzy. I am still pleased to see that viewers are still being touched by my video.
uno25 5 years ago
I tried to be as descriptive as I could without going overboard. I edited out pics involving stray animals and abandoned bodies because it made the video hard to watch. Thanks for being honest about your experience.
uno25 5 years ago
im sorry i could only handle the 1st minute and had to turn it off. its too hard to handle.
RodeoCowboy87 5 years ago
It's hard for me to watch at times as well...I left out a lot of grotesque pics...involving stray animals and abandoned bodies...I still think that I included a good mix. I wanted this video to be as descriptive as it could be, without grossing out viewers.
uno25 5 years ago
OMG im freaking crying!the song doesnt match the video but i still love it!

Thanks for your honest remarks! I tried something different and I'm glad you enjoyed it.
