since i got the 25th aniversary dvd....i always wondered what had happened to the break in this section coz its my favourite part of the film....*shows the entire hip hop culture in the space of 2 minutes!* thanks for enlightening me.....i prefered this version with the bells...DEFFO!!!!
Bob James is a dick for not clearing the sample. I read years ago that he didn't respect Hip-Hop. Hey Bob, his movie, JMJ, and Wu-Tang KEPT u relevant to this modern generation.
@acdegrees421 : I don't think it was Bob James that had a say in this, but rather Paul Simon or his record label/owner of the rights of the song. Paul Simon was the original composer of "Take Me To The Mardi Gras". Maybe someone else can shed a light on this...
@acdegrees421 I don't think it was Bob James' decision. There are two songs that Flash is cutting on the scene; the first one is "God Made Me Funky" by Head Hunters, the second break is, of course, Bob James' "Mardi Gras", but it is Paul Simon's song. Both breaks were replaced on the Wild Style DVD, so we don't really know whether it was Bob James who refused to clear it. But Bob James seems to have allow a lot of artists to use his recordings, so I wouldn't assume it was Bob's fault.
