Eventhough there where changes in the movie that wasn't accurate to the books I think Peter Jackson told this story in a way that Tolkien would have been very proud of. He pulled off something that was really just impossible to do of making this book into a movie. He did such an epic job at making this book come to life and is just outstanding work. I wished he would have taken on Eragon the movie because he'd stayed closer to the book instead of straying like the others did.

How they did this was they filmed Gandalf talking to nothing, then filmed Frodo farther away talking to nothing then combined the two. They did more than just this for this effect, but it's crazy how much work they put into doing that.

They did it partly by making oversized sets, then in other scenes they used "little" people, to show them from behind, and suchlike...
