  • Electric cars are the future unless someone invents a Deloran, the fusion engine =)

  • electricity_car is the future.

Unless someone invent a Deloran with home fusion advice instead of Uranium-drive

  • Things can be powered by electricity? What's next? Wind? Sun? Water? Potatoes? This is so stupid.

  • Well, I knew first time about the commercial from "Who killed the electric car" movie. Indeed, is not the most inspirational set of sounds and images, the feeling and emotions it raises are not the happiest ones, I have to admit. I would compare it with X-Files themes more :-), where mystery is mixed with fear... But maybe the commercial ad was not really intended to raise people curiosity...I would ask people today what would be if mobile phone would have been fuel powered? Would you use it?

  • to me, this commercial doesn't seem creepy. The music sounded like that of a mystery and that something too good to be true actually did exist and that the feeling in this commercial made it seem like we're supposed to be in amazement and awe. That's what I got

  • @DrSurprise I disagree, it is very, very creepy to me.

  • Nice voice. (yeah, right)

  • Fucking creepy

  • This was actually scary.

  • Corporate greed is what makes me proud to be pursuing a career in public service.

  • I think the reason this commercial failed was because it seems to be implying that people are too stupid to understand how electric cars run. Why not just have the person be CURIOUS about the mechanics of the can instead of making it sound like they're so stupid that they assume that the damn car is just running down a hill with nothing but its tires.

  • Magic?

  • Personally, I preferred "Electric Car 3: EV vs. Freddy", but that's just me.

  • QUESTION: does anyone know the name of that ominous soundtrack music?

(I had nothing against the commercial, because I like creepy things, but I can see why an advertisement like this would fail...sorry for the car though)

  • was the marketing team on acid?

  • what the fuck

  • what the hell? do you call this an advert? for me this is anti-promote advert. This adverts could scare people

  • this is creepy.

    :(

  • Now compare this advert to their unaired version.

  • Also forgot...if you look at the shadows they are turned in the direction that the EV1 is headed...it was that eye catching, and to imagine seeing a car pass you and be totally silent would make you look too!

  • this car was the "future" that the oil company big wigs didnt want to see...it WAS the truth. If you guys see the documentary "Who Killed The Electric Car?" you know it by how hard the people who got to lease one protested their hearts out until the very end.

  • When I see those shadows, I think Slenderman is watching me.

  • Comment removed

  • @smelllzlykazz

I was talking to the guy before me, the one about the pruis. This was before the @Misinformed Commenter feature, and also a year ago. Instead of commenting on comments made a year ago, maybe you should talk to some friends.

  • Am I the only one who likes the commercial?

  • @Imposter138 no, three other people like this commercial

  • wow they showed the corner of the car for like 10 seconds. the rest of the time the camera is pointed at the shadows on the pavement

  • "How does it go?" It's so unnatural! It's an UNHOLY ABOMINATION!!!!!!!

  • If you buy this car, the gates of hell will yawn open and rain firey death upon the Earth. Also, you'll resurrect Hitler.

  • Apparently, it goes by being powered by tortured human souls. Geez! I've heard that woman's voice in commercials before, and she could make a children's birthday party seem creepy.

  • Alright, so it may be a somewhat tenuous link, nevertheless...

THIS HOLE WAS MADE FOR ME!

  • BRING BACK THE EV1!

  • the video could be a holocaust montage

  • @nottinmatterz2day More likely nuclear holocaust, considering those shadows...

  • was watching this at 3:00 am, now I'm scared to go to sleep... wtf

  • @Shizuquill Ha Ha, the add was carefully designed to make people NOT want an electric car.It worked perfectly. The commercial people did a good job.

  • Arnie- Come with me if you want to drive an E.V

    Judgement day is here!

  • They need to hire better people to make commercials for them... o.O

  • This has to be one of the creepiest ads I have ever seen.

  • Alright umm...this i NOT how you sell a car at all! You sell a car by showing a picture of it driving down the road with the person inside having a lovely time. So either GM is run by idiots or they didn't want to see the car. And if they didn't want to sell the car, why bother to advertise it at all? In fact, why bother to MAKE it?

  • we already had fully functioning electric cars a few years ago! "How did we go so long without it?!!!" simple car companies released it, wouldnt let people buy it only lease it, and then confiscated them from their owners, discontinued them despite popular demand and in the end crushed all but ONE. hypocitical bastards like them killed the possibility because of the oil industry. go watch who killed the electric car and then come back to this video without fucking exploding

  • Now watch them revive this ad campaign for the Volt.

  • The message of the commercial is: "Buying electric cars will lead to a nuclear holocaust in which the shadows of your loved ones will be burnt into the cold, unfeeling concrete, the last ghastly memorial to the hubris of humanity. There will come soft rains, and then crumbling stones, forever."

"Oh, and there's no God, either! Sweet dreams!"

  • @Alephvoid But... HOW?

  • @Thor22289 No clue. Ask the disembodied alien archeologist (voiced by the narrator, Linda Hunt) picking through the remains of human civilization. "How does it go without gas and air? How does it go without sparks and explosions? How did mankind die off without a trace of struggle? How did they go mad and silence their noisy cities in the blink of an eye? How could this car bring them to this?"

  • @Alephvoid "Ignorance is bliss" I guess... I rather keep my sanity with me.

  • As professional in the advertising and marketing industry I can tell you the minds behind the concept and creation of this ad would have known that these images and this music would evoke a negative and almost revolting response. This combination of voice, imagery, and music is a disgusting combination for promoting anything. Those pricks new it too.

  • This sounds like the music you'd hear behind the footage of these cars' destruction .

  • EVs are the answer to our problems and the cure to our addiction to oil only IF the electricity used to power them is coming from solar, wind, and water power. If it's coming from factories and generators, it's using just as many if not more fossil fuels.

  • Those shadows creeped me out, they made me think of what happened at Hiroshima.

  • I Am Ambivalent About Electric Cars, But I Am An Enthusiast Of Capitalizing Every Word As You Seem To Be.

  • And just what in the bloody hell does that have to do with cars!?

  • Note to GM: in a car commercial, you show us the car, you say some of the features, and show the price. IT IS NOT THAT HARD TO MAKE A CAR COMMERCIAL.

  • i am fucking weeping from terror right now

  • The music tells me I should be supporting breast cancer, Chrone's Disease, Melanoma, shelter dogs, and orphans.

  • This advert is scary and it looks like threat. But I think, EVs are the future. And I enjoy the Nissan Leaf and Mitsubishi iMiEV.

  • We claim to be a free market, then we bail out all the companies/banks that fuck themselves over with bad policies. Bailing out these companies is basically rewarding them for fucking over the American people. Yes, initially there might have been jobs lost from GM. But then, over time, smaller car companies would have expanded their operations to fill the hole in the industry and thus, new jobs would be created. If we claim to have a free market, then lets actually it work.

  • The fuck is this!!!!!!!!!!

That is not how you sell cars!!

YOU CAN'T EVEN SEE THE CAR!!!(except for the left tail light)

Served you right GM when you were going downhill.....too bad you had bailout. That way you would have disappeared!

  • In order to prove to California there was no demand for these vehicles the fine crooks at GM made commercials like this to keep folks away. Thanks for posting it.

  • sounds like a creep grandma

  • so would you buy a car from a creepy grandma??? NO!!

That is really sad. Putting this commercial. :(

  • Ev1 was a great car but this gives me shivers

  • Lol, this commerical reminds me of a nuclear war scene from Terminator. Just imagine that the shadows of the kids are burned into the concrete by the nuclear blast, replace the creepy voiceover with Linda Hamilton, keep the music exactly like it is, and BINGO!

  • This is SCARY AS HELL!

It sent shivers down my spine when it was shown on the documentary "who killed the electric car".

  • I remember hearing about this ad around 1998 and we wondered the same thing. We thought that GM not only had some kind of death wish for the EV1, but we thought electric cars were inevitable and that GM had some kind of death wish for itself. We later heard of the cars being destroyed, still later watched "Who Killed The Electric Car" and finally watched GM Corporation essentially cease to exist. GM Corp. had a 15 year(!) lead in the electric car market, and insanely threw it all away.

  • great spook campaign...nice one, surely using all the millions and billions on these ads to scare the public away. Did you know the Oil companies dictate and own what and how these ads are promoted..

  • They need to get hot babe with some big sun glasses cruising down the highway reciting that poem. Good poem, creepy ass grandma.

Wonder what moral-less cheap as dirt advertiser they scrapped off the floor to make this.

  • sigh ... if I remember correctly, this commercial was nominated for an award. Don't hate it just because it doesn't have some model with huge tits in a scantily clad dress laying across the hood. GM was trying to do something different for a very different car. This was probably the most innovative car commercial ever produced.

  • well... most innovative except for the early Volkswagen commercials.

  • That just scared the crap out of me! Electric cars are very scary!

  • any GM exec who was pushing the EV 1 would never have gone through with this commercial.

  • lolz.....this seems like a horror film commercial....'the electric car is here.....to eat you'..lolz..

  • Check out the Chevy Volt Dance on You Tube. They're doing it again.

  • I heard this was originally an ad poster made by GM, and the audio was added by the makers of "Who Killed the Electric Car" to make it seem as though GM were using "anti-advertising" on the EV1. That's what I heard.

  • OMG This is sO clearly supposed to make you think of a nuclear war.. The first thing I thought OF was the stories of people's shadows being burned into the sidewalks in Japan...Then the creepy music and if that wasn't enough they have that sound of (what is not an explosion but is made to sound like one) and the final shot shows the car ahead of people's shadows as if to tell you it's leaving humaity behind. Oh and let's not forget the "how does it go without sparks and explosions?"

  • a fully electric car could get a few hundred miles and if more research was done, like with gas-powered cars, who knows how much farther you could get

  • It's like a trailer for a nuclear holocaust film. Creepy.

  • I dont think so

  • YES X2

  • alright

  • Do you even know what you're talking about?

  • This would have been a true revolution to the world if the human crazyness would not have killed it. Mr.Bush (father) and his little friends are in part responsible for this. The GM recall was never because of an electrical problem as they said. To me this is really the proof that the humanity will not change before a majority of it dies.

  • My User May Be TitanicFreak, But Im Also An EV1Freak too.

  • i get cheeped out every time i see this.

  • Am I missing something? this commercial doesn't even show the car!

  • that is the point...GM sabataged the electric car sales with crappy commercials to promote it's gas guzzler, more profitable cars and suvs.

  • have you seen the GM transformer car commercials?

  • I know right. You can't even see the amazing car, all you get is the left tail light!! The fuck!!!!! I could even make a better commercial than that!!!!

  • this commercial was so controversial because after the ev1 was cancelled people started wondering whether or not this commercial was meant to scare away people from it. The scary voice, the creepy background music, it's almost as though GM wanted the ev1 killed. look at them now, they're bankrupt! practically. ev1 was so popular, and would've gotten really popular too, too bad GM was somehow dumb enough to cancel the program, we would've been seeing these cars on the road if it weren't for them!

  • @nigahigaboii They did want it killed, they hated the car because it didn't require much maintenance. Thats why they sued the law and then stole all the cars ad destroyed them.

  • @nigahigaboii It wasn't shutdown but was killed of by oil and car companys. they bought out the calafornian leaders and slowly killed of the eletric cars

  • I've seen commercials from this car that scares the consumer away. I remember this as a kid (10 years old) and was very frighted and somewhat dumbfounded as to what an eletric car is... I have/love my 95z28 but I am disturbed that GM would sell it's battery technology to texaco oil co. and take all the EV1s away from the people who wanted to buy them after their leases. The owners offered GM 1.9 million dollars for the last 78 EV1s and they still ignored them and crushed them.

  • Screw GM they killed a perfectly good car that would of been good for everyone because they wouldnt make enough money off it now they are bankrupt lol screw them

  • creepy man....its so good at being legit w/o saying "dont buy it". soo eerie

  • It was made so people didn't buy it. The Car is like a ghost, it still is around but it is not allowed on the road and is disabled so no one takes it on the road. It should not have existed but yet it did, and it will exist tomorrow as the Chevy Volt.

  • i doubt it. They were meant to release the Volt a long time ago, and its still no closer. This EV1 was an incredible car for its day, and considering battery technology today, available electric cars have not really come any further than this one, with the exception of Telsa cars. There is a reason for that, and its cause very few people are really trying.

  • This commercial is more like saying dont buy this product rather than saying buy our product... wft???

  • The ad's were strange because they were trying to get people not to buy it. Because they did not want company's like Shell and Texaco getting aware that it was taking over the combustion market-share. It looked like a threat and it became so much of one that they had to pull it back so that future generations don't know that an Electric car is possible. Of course you can keep it hidden or you can re-innovate like the Chevy Volt.

  • I love how the commercial looks like a nuclear holocaust. Stirs up endearing ideals about the car.

  • It´s kinda strange they don´t even show the car properly. I want to see the whole car.

I wish they didn´t crush every one of them:(

  • there's one or two left

  • Yeah it is, but the technology in them has been ripped out. So one of them are in a museum. And the other one is a whole new type of battery in it.

  • GM killed it. Why bother listening to the partisan hacks who post here when you can judge yourself?

  • HAHAH what a crap commercial!!!!

OHhhhh ROFL!!!.... What a piece of crap looking junk battery car from the 90's!!

    LOL! GARBAGE!!!

  • Here's a way to get interest back in General Motors. Say they are going to bring back the EV1, and not with an add campaign that resembles the film "A.I." - I have a friend that works for GM in the engineering division and do you know what they are hoping to launch besides the VOLT to revitalize their market? The revamped Camaro!!!!!!

  • horrible commercial!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Its to bad GM distroyed all these cars. They leased them out then took them all back and crushed them. Makes you wonder.... No wonder they need a bailout at the expence of the taxpayer. GM should just dissapear into the wind. There time is done.

  • that is just a really creepy ad !!!!!!!!!!!

  • BIG OIL KILLED THE ELECTRIC CAR!!!!! GM DIDNT EVEN MAKE AN EFFORT TO MARKET THE EV1!!!! I cant wait till the MINI E possibly goes into production!

  • That was such a weak ad campaign. I don't think GM could have made less of an effort. These cars could have been the beginning of something. Not the solution, but a push off the cliff at least.

  • These cars need to get on the road!

  • Why did the baby explode?

  • Hilarious.

  • Okay.. that was a great video! really made ma laugh! I liked it alot! I wanna watch it over and over again now!! I t really had me laughing!

  • The voiceover sounds so much more frightened or nervous that the intrigued or excited tone you would expect when promoting a product like that. Those sorts of decisions aren't made by accident!

  • oh come on, it was deliberate to kill the electric car. that was creepy as hell, really spooky, with alien like shadows and that weird voice-over. It's as if a buyer was signing up for an alien invasion--"it isn't coming, it's here". That send shivers down my spine.

  • it wasn't.

    gas was 1.40

    reality killed the electric car.

  • The oil companies and GM killed the electric car and now they can all be bankrupt together. Hummer's are a great alternative to an electric car aren't they, especially when gas is $3.50/gallon. I went past a used sales lot the other day and the only things for sale were SUV's and big American boat cars, I guess American's weren't ready for those either.

  • scariest car ever. EXPLOSIONS!!!!

  • sad people vote you down. but thats the reality. a tesla costs 120+k 10 years after ev1. the reality was that it was not an affordable technology regardless of environmental wishful thinking which is about as religious and unscientific as it gets

  • You must work for GM, if you watch Who Killed the Electric Car you will see that the battery issues were resolved and the car could go about 70 miles easily without being recharged. I don't know about you but there are many of us who don't do 70 miles in a day, the average driver drives about 23, to work and back and some errands, this car would have worked out just fine for me.

  • Resolved? Really? They degrade quickly. About 10-20% per year. They are REAL expensive and REAL heavy. No one killed the electric car. It was suicide. 8 hours to recharge... Try taking a nice road trip with that.

And no, I don't work for any car company. I just know a failed concept when I see it.

  • Is that why people are still driving the EV Rav 4, because it's a totally crappy car.

Answer me this, if the technology is so inferior then why did GM sell the battery patent to Conoco/Texaxo?

You don't know what you are talking about the second generation batteries were good for 150 miles per day, and the car had 30% Regenerative brakes which meant that every time you pressed on the brakes the battery was recharging, just as in the Toyota Prius. Do you work for GM?

  • If the Rav 4 is so good, why did toyota abandon it and the only electric car they plan to produce is the size of a Smart (HA!) Fourtwo and only goes 25 miles per hour?

They sold it because they are building a new plant you moron.

  • Anyway, even if what jwissick is saying is true, today's bateries could make that car go up to 400km without rechanging. Check on the internet if you don't believe me.

I think that you can have a "NICE ROAD TRIP" with that.

Well, GenXintrovert73 has already posted coments about the EV1's batteries so, I don't have to repeat that.

  • Really? The new Chevy Volt, scheduled to be released in the near future, has a Huge range of FORTY MILES or 64km. The Ev rav4 has a range of about 100 miles and takes FIVE hours to charge. No wonder you don't see any in private hands... Only government.

  • Actually, i'm not talking abut AMERICAN CARS (or cars sold in america) So, the places where more electric car delopment is seen are asia (india, china, korea, japan) europe, recently SouthAfrica (african electric MPV boasts 400km range - IN STORES NEXT YEAR). You're expected to charge your car at night (like your cell phone). Plus, even the cars that mencioned can satisfy the needs of 95% of people. Battery technology is there, your gouverment worked with oil companies to hide you that.

  • Ok. ANd when you need to go further some day or power outage and you can't charge? Or you get a dead battery? Then what? YOU SCREWED then.

No thanks. That does not work for most americans at all. The battery tech is NOT there. Till I can do the exact same things I can do with my gas engine, I am not interested in downgrading to an inferior electric car. Till I can get 200+ miles a charge AND get a dead battery swapped out or recharged in less than 5 minutes for $20 buck, NO WAY.

  • Electricity is much cheaper than gas! Anyway, what if gas raises its price again (its price is always going up and down). Your pocket would be affected hardly; that don't happens with electricity. You also have to consider the environmental problems that electric vehicles would solve if most of us use them. Also, if the oil adiction weren't existed, the US woulded have a war in the middle-east. Also, you don't drive 400km in a day and power outages last only a few hours.

  • Its cheaper right now.. but when it will require the US to rebuild it's entire electrical grid because it will exceed capacity when everyone gets home at 6pm and plugs in... What environmental problems with gas? The Iraq was was not over oil no matter what any conspiracy theorist told you. I driver more than 800km in a day a few times a year. And some power outages have lasted weeks in some remote areas. While you can't bring in volt then, you can bring in gas. Try again.

  • Evironmental problem with gas

1.oil leaks in the seas during transportation

    2.global warming

3.water, air, ground, etc is being polluted be chemicals during its refination and usage

    4.etc

And the war in Irak was caused by oil, no matter what any stupid genocidist told you.

Well, now that you told how much you drive, i think that electric cars are not for you (your part of that 5%) but you can still the batt. tech, that you said that it was not there, in hybrid car.

  • 1) Oil leaks out of the earth all the time. Its natural. There are bacteria that consume it and make it harmless.

    2) Global warming is a theory that has not been proven to exist. Non starter.

    3) There is nothing wrong with my water.

If the IraQ was was started over oil, where is the oil? We import less oil now from Iraq than we did for 5 years prior to the start of the war. Your premises is false.

Hybrids are a toxic mess and do not work for me either as well as most americans.try again

  • 1) oil becames a pollution factor when some chemicals are added to make it work for cars.

    2) most experts stablish that global warming is actually. I'm not surprise that you don't believe on that. Your goverment make a hard effort on expreading the false news that there was a doubt between scientifics. Almost all scientific studies support my point.

    3) you only on think on things that are affecting your directly but are cold knowing that every sec a kid die due to polluted water.

  • 1) Those chemicals come fro oil. There is not much risk there compared to the byproducts of the manufacture of electric car batteries.

    2) Most experts do NOT claim that global warming is a reality. Many more who say it MAY exist offer ZERO proof as to its cause (man made or something we can't control like the SUN). How do you explain all the record low temps this winter? GW BS

    3) Every sec a kid could die from a croc in Africa too. Should we stop the world because of that too? Non starter.

  • 1) just the ones oil companies admit to add to that

    2) wow, well you're a skeptic and I respect your points of view (even if you seem to not respect mines). However, your goverment manipulate media to make that state of uncertainty between americans. So, many of that experters were paid to realese that studies

"it's difficult that a man understan sth if his salary depends on his ignorance"

    3) you're so cold. Well... Nevermind. You can stay in your house ignoring that there's a real world outside

  • well, it was an intellectual pleasure debating with you. However, both have very strong and different opinions that none of us want to change; so, it think that the most correct and mature thing is ending this debate here. Have a nice day!!!

  • 4) i'm talking what caused the world not the oil you import from there now. I'm surprise that you keep importing any oil from there you are giving them money to keep the war on.

5)what about hydrogen cars?? Iceland is using them. Anyway, just don't buy a Hummer!!!

  • Why care about polluted water? For every ONE child that dies from fuel polluted water, THOUSANDS more die from malaria. Get your priorities straight.

Hydrogen? Your kidding right? You DO know where hydrogen comes from right??

  • Hey, is 1 CHILD EVERY SECOND. From malaria 3000 are killed in a day. There're 86400 seconds in a day.

Hidrogen comes from a process where using a large amount of electricity H and O2 from water is separeted.

  • they are gonna be avaible on Iceland soon

  • also, they have intevented a system where hidrogen is extracted from the gas that is delivered to your house's stove. It contains high level of Hidrogen

You seem to be negative to all green technologies and despresing them as they were junk. But if you want to keep polluting the planet, ocasionated global warming (that is real - my country is the 3° most affect by it - we are lossing our glaciers) as the ones that screw up the planet did, for me is fine.

  • You know what? It was really fun debating with you but, we are just out of the original topic. Also, we are gonna getting nowhere with this debate. We have different and strong ideas that none of us what actually to change. So, I think that we can just declare this as a tie. Both of us said good arguments from part we are defending. SO, Have a nice life!!!

  • SORRY, i forgot to insert the number THEY DIE MORE THAT 4000 a day. (more than malaria)

Also, you have to rethink what's an human life

  • Your 1 child per sec from fuel polluted water is bogus so don't even go there.

Hydrogen from water? Incorrect. That process is too expensive, too energy intensive, and consumes more energy than it provides... an energy black hole. The current source of hYdrogen that industry uses comes from hydrocarbons from fossil fuels. That process also releases carbon, so it may be a contributor to gw... if it exists.

It seems to me that someone has been feeding you misinformation.

  • I corrected that info.

I corrected 4000 kids a day 1 child per sec was just a typing mistake (i didn't insert the number)

See the water composition h2o. Also, i spicified LARGE AMOUNT OF ENERGY. I only post because you didn't wanted to accept the possiblity of electric cars... see our debate.

I also put that the actual system is extracting the gas of your stove (an hydrocarbon) to extract hidrogen. Even if it would contribute to gw, the actual system is an even worse contributor.

  • You also are clearly misinformated about gw. So, your not the best person to tell me that .

Even so, i already said to you have nice life!!!!!

  • GM installed public rechargable stations for EV1 users; GM closed them with the cancelation of the program. Electric cars have proven to work for people in many countries. Some of them are already experimenting with its massive use. They can ajust to the needs of almost everyone BUT, i'm not saying that it cover YOUR needs. Charging can be a problem but, you just have to make sure to keep it charged (like a cellphone).

  • No wonder they didn't sell any.

  • They werent for sale GM just leased them out then junked all the cars after the leases were up

  • I should have said leased instead of sales. Really, thats a pretty weird commercial for such a new cool concept for that time.

  • sounds like you are making an assumption with that comment. Have you even seen one exploded. Have you even check the stats of car fires with gas cars?

  • lol i used to have a Fiero, it never got over the 84 4cyl engine fires.

  • The engine of a gas powered car make several explotions to keep the car moving... They are refering to that.

  • You could have piped in dialogue from The Day After, and I wouldn't have noticed any disconnect. Weird commercial. I sorta see what they were trying to do (I disagree this was deliberately made to scare people away), but they obviously didn't put their best marketing talent on it.
