No one seems to know this but you can turn one piece of wood into a piece of Charcoal which acts the exact same as coal (burns eight items, makes 4 torches, etc), AND you can burn it with planks. 1 plank burns 1.5 items so 4 planks will burn 6 items. You could use 7 blocks of wood to produce 6 charcoal. This is great to remember if you can't find coal.

To gather obsidian, put down some water and a when the block breaks the water will keep it from going into the lava by obsidianizing the lava.

And another thing, to both @CreeperOnYourHouse and Muse, is that obsidian isnt formed when water cools it at all. Obsidian forms when basaltic lava (really runny lava) is cooled naturally by air (rapidly)

Just saying, @19:00 (around about) when you said when water and lava meet irl, it doesnt form pumice. Pumice is formed when lava is erupted into the air, which then rapidly expands to cause the bubbles inside it. When lava meets water, it just simply solidifies into a rock which is the same composion as the lava, which is usually basalt :P

actually, IRL, when magma and water meet, they form obsidian or pumice. It all depends on the silica (iron) content and speed of cooling.

And two, I once made a quarry on a singleplayer world of mine. Once I finished it, I stuffed everything in chests, took torches to light my way home, and promptly died from fall damage. All those resources have been sitting there ever since.

if lava cools down really fast and become solid it usually makes obsidian in rl. but yea this is volcanic glass an can easily be smashed.

You need 3 pieces :3 and you need enough to make a nether portal as well. Because you have to go into the nether find a nether fort to get blaze rods to make the potion thing. Hope that helps Some!

actually, in reality muse, obsidian is somewhat strong but it is very useful because of the way it breaks. when it breaks it splits into very sharp shards, and it is not hazardous to the human body. Because of this, obsidian is commonly used in surgical scalpels.

@maSK1337 No. You would need 285 pieces all centered in a 1 block area and that is not possible with TNT as 1 piece blowing up would make all the oter pieces fly away randomly. You CAN do this with the Single Player Commands mod by typing in "explode 285" dont put the air quotes. This is proven by AntVenom in his video titled by:"Blowing up Obsidian w/ TNT!". He shows various ways, until he just puts 1 block and keeps adding to the explode command until it blows up. Then he uses the X-Ray pack
