Richard and Karen Carpenter defined and entire era of music. Karen's voice was unparalleled, classic, and timeless. In a way, she was ahead of her time. Her dramatic voice was uplifting and sultry, which could stir the soul of any man with even faintest pulse.
I always thought it might of been cool that of all the many interviews Karen did in the following years some witty DJ might of began by saying, "Hello Karen, well it's not Monday and it's not raining.....how are you feeling?" I think she would of liked that. Then he might ask her "how did you invent one of the greatest singing voices in modern music by age 19?" I would of loved to hear her answer!
Do you honestly not feel just a slight bit insincere when you write "Karen went to heaven to teach angels how to sing"? I assure you the rest of us are cringing.
Yeah, but, you see, Zarathustra, one of their big hits "Close to You," contains the lyric, "On the day that you were born the angels got together, and decided to create a dream come true," so this sort of sentiment goes with the territory. I'm willing to give obamaisapieceofshit the benefit of the doubt.
Touché, goback3spaces. Having since ventured further into the Carpenters oeuvre, I've discovered it's necessary to take their saccharine sentimentality with a grain of salt.
true. the music is pure pop. however, listen to her voice; thats not saccharine sentimentality I hear, its pain and longing. in other words, real life.
Oooh!! Aren't we hip and edgy? You are the kind of person that helped to destroyed her. Hope you are happy with that, Go read your flippin' Rolling Stone magazine.
OOOH! Aren't we hip, edgy and condescending! Go back to reading your Rolling Stone magazine or whatever the "oeuvre" is these days for slamming people who are just not cool enough for you. Test your power to see who else you can destroy. This woman had one of the purest singing voices ever. Name some that were as good or better. That is a challenge. Thus Spake Squitzy!
Absolutely love a girl that plays the drums and sings this beautiful. I was always the guy that played the saxophone part. I still love that role and the mechanics of blowing the horn.
Thanks for a great memory. I was fortunate to have seen the Carpenters in concert twice. The last concert I will always remember because my mother passed exactly a week later. This song holds a very special place in my heart
I grew up listening to her songs, thnx to my Mother & Godmother who loves to listen to her songs, that's why till now i love to sing her songs. Thanks for uploading!
I love this song. Fantastic writing by Paul Williams, I believe. And a perfect marriage of song and voice. A higher voice would have made this song too feminine, too woe is me. But, especially with Karen Carpenter's voice, it's not really depressing. It feels like sort of a bearable melancholy that you know you'll get over. If only she had.
note: to EdwardWLynn: wow,,,,,,thats a great way to put it....."a bearable melancholy that you know you'll get over". Sounds like something a Brit would say
Once Anorexia digs it's claws into you it is like a demon that engulfs you. I have had long relationships with 2 girlfriends that suffered dearly from it. It is almost like having agressive cancer.
I thought of the perfect name for Karen Carpenter. She should be called Our Lady of Rock Divinity. She was so great. I'm going to go and paste this message on some other videos because I think it's a good name. I hope it catches on.
Actually she was more anorexic than Bulemic she she tended to starve herself more so than puking -- although after she went through treatment for anorexia she did become more so Bulemic after that -- taking huge doses of Ipetec Syrup to induce vomiting which they say probably was the major contributor to her ultimate death as Ipetec is a very harsh substance (basically a poison) and it threw her electrolites all out of balance leading to her death of heart failure
What actually killed Karen Carpenter? Was it the bulimia or anorexia? I mean, anorexic because she used restriction & bulimic because she used laxatives. Was she a mixture of the two or what?
I think her family killed her with their unreal expectations. I've been treated for an eating disorder and I can tell you, one of the most common things among patients with these problems is that unless they're perfect and live up t everyone's specifications, they're not going to be loved. Karen's mother was very hard on her. Richard was always her mother's favorite. Watch "The Karen Carpenter Story"; it's here on youtube.
Actually she wasn't doing well after treatment in 1981 --- shortly after her return to L.A. after treatment in NYC she was abck to abusing laxatives and was consuming huge doses of Ipetec Syrup to induce vometing -- so publically, yes she would eat, but then drink ipetec afterwards and vomit - they say that the Ipetec was more a contributor to her heart failure than the actual yrs of anorexic abuse --- and after recovery there were still certain foods that she wouldn't touch (eggs for example)
Initially she was more anorexic --- very ritualistic about avoiding meals - if in a restaurant she would wait until everyone else placed their order so she could order something completely different and then would share it up with everyone else to avaid actually eating it -- after treatement in 1981 for anorexia she actually then became more bulemic after - consuming huige doses of Ipetec syrup to induce vomiting
They're both great and are both classy singers, these are the kind of singers we should be appreciating not tearing down or putting them up against each other. They're amazing in their own ways.
I normally don't like this kind of music but there's just something about Karen's voice
