Mini My Keepon review part4 - It seems to me they really really really should have put more effort into getting it to continually listen to the background beat and dance in sync without stopping because that's what a lot of people admired about the Keepon Pro - a My Keepon v2 definitely needs to be made. If they could make it listen+dance at the same time I would buy another one (this time to keep), otherwise I'll just wait for a very cheap one or as a gift.

Mini My Keepon review part3 - The touch mode is actually quite funny; if you tap him on the head 10 times in a row and he'll bop down/up 10 times, but tap 30 times he'll do 30 movements but not all are bopping down/up. Tap him on the front/back/side and he'll move or turn in that direction, but double tap and he does different things than tapping them once, also try squeezing front+back or left+right buttons at the same time.

Mini My Keepon review part2 - The beat matching is surprisingly good when you clap your hands at a steady rate, but give it music and it can't tell the difference between high pitch sounds and any pounding low frequency beat that it really should be dancing to. Also when it pauses every 8 seconds to listen to the music it ruins the character of the toy and it automatically goes to sleep after several minutes even with music playing.

Mini My Keepon review part1 - I received one a couple of weeks ago, the batteries weren't that difficult to install but the screw head was annoying (needed an unusually fat flat-head screwdriver). It can run on an external PSU with a voltage anywhere between 8v-12v.

I sent it back the next day for a refund because it stopped working on batteries (I tried new Duracells & freshly charged rechargeables) and only ran on external power. I haven't bought another one yet.

Also, MyKeepon is running Dance Mode and Touch Mode on the same computer (as you can tell by the two buttons at the base), whereas KeeponPro seems to be running the programs on four, so they can all work in conjunction. This is why it seems that you can poke KeeponPro while it's dancing and make it look at you funny.

Remote Controlled has higher priority than Touch Mode which has higher priority than Dance Mode and Beat Check. All those computers make him more expensive.

Now, Beat Check is not doing the dancing. What Beat Check does is listen for the beat (Is the music still going? Am I dancing this correctly?) and tell Dance Mode to make the piston swivel and bob.

Since MyKeepon lacks Beat Check, Dance Mode has to do all this checking itself. What you see as "dancing to the music" is actually the program choreographing what happened 6-10 seconds ago.

Okay, judging by what I can see and analyze, MyKeepon and and KeeponPro aren't even programmed the same.

MyKeepon seems to be running only two programs, Dance Mode and Touch Mode, while KeeponPro is running Dance Mode, Beat Check, Touch Mode, and Remote Controlled.

In MyKeepon, Dance Mode is the only program running so they adjusted it to have the toy beat check every 6 seconds. But KeeponPro runs Beat Check and Dance Mode at the same time, Beat Check running longer so it can adjust on the go.

The My Keepon is a toy designed to capitalize on the popularity of the Keepon Pro. Don't hate on this video since the My Keepon didn't come out until 2011. So it came out 4 years after this video.

@jskuzma Hate to be one of those people, but CMU didn't design the Keepon. It was developed by Hideki Kozima while he was at NICT in Kyoto, Japan. The one in the video here was worked on by a CMU student to be autonomous. From what I can take from the Wikipedia article, the original was remote controlled by a tele-operator.

Just got the MyKeepon. This is 40 bucks well spent. It doesn't sense your movements, nor does it dance as fluidly as this one, it still gets the job done. It's like an iDog. But better. And cuter.

And some of the proceeds go into Autism research.

I ordered mine online for $40 and got it today. It requires 8 double AA batteries, has a poorly made battery compartment, doesn't even dance anywhere CLOSE to how it does in any of these demonstration videos (just bounces around offbeat and even continues to dance when you shut off the music), and the visual input is poor. Just read the reviews on the Toys R Us site or tested.com to see that I'm not the only one disappointed.

It's not supposed to be able to do what the one in the video does, that one is mostly used in labs and is super expensive. The MyKeepon is a (much) simplified replica of the KeeponPro. I think it's pretty cool.
