calm down every one. Luther does sing it good too but Luther is not a musical theater performer. The Brian Stokes is expected to sing this like an old man would. Luther doesnt have that restraint he can over affect it all he wants and make it Luther. But when watched on stage there is a sublime weakness and humility created by Mitchell's performance. Which for me in the long run makes his version more impressive to me.
I agree with MsMaynes and darknight. BSM owns both the stage and the repertoire. I never miss his performances when he comes to my town I'd also add he is a celebrity with his heart in the right place.

@jayseah32 This isn't Mitchell's best performance of it, either. Check out the soundtrack from the Broadway revival he was in. Plus, some folks below point out some issues with the sound recording as well (which I agree with it). It's not a competition, though - Goulet's good, Mitchell's good, and I've always had a soft sport in my heart for Placido Domingo's version.

Then he let himself go and, in a manner of speaking, let Don Quixote take over, and the reason he is so famous for his rendition of this song becomes obvious again. I don't know why but every time I hear this man sing I feel the need to hear more. He has a fine voice but that is not the reason. He invests the lyrics with so much humanity and understanding that each song's performanc becomes a minor masterpiece.
Too theatrical for my taste, maybe in the play but for a solo it really needed more feeling and passion. I don't believe he captured the real spirit of the song. I have to say I like Jim Nabors version from the Gomer Pyle U.S.M.C. much better. He at least acted like the song meant something to him. And I thought the vocals were much more in line with what the character was trying to portray.

Cheesy, fake, soulless, on and of the voice, no line, no top. Sorry, not good singing...... See Sam Ramey, Bryn Terfel etc etc. This is why opera singers don't want to do musical theatre, because it has attracted this speak-singing nonsense and killed great music.
This is a true anthem for those who go through troubles and adversity and have to fight in any which way to sort their lives out. Not only that but inspiring and beautifully written and sung to give us all pleasure.!!!

I agree with Agorante. I used to be a fan of Stokes' voice, but lately I do not care for it, I think he has lost a lot of the power he once had. If you really want an outstanding recording of this listen to Bryn Terfel's recording.

Terrible. Clearly the worst version of this song on YouTube. Not only does he skip the final high note but he has no legato at all. He uses some dreadful sort of Spechstimme. He is special as in the Special Olympics.
Jim Nabors is preferable. Also Ramey, Terfel and Villazon. Mitchell is hokey and distasteful.

The Impossible Dream is not particularly difficult but it still requires actual singing, not the Rex Harrison semi-singing style that is acceptable elsewhere.
I just happen to catch some of Edward Kennedy's memorial and this guy came on, and he looked like someone I had seen on television but I just could not place him, than his name came on the screem, than I remembered that he started on Trapper John MD. Rhyd sings it better live, but when record producers get hold of if in a studio, its never the same.Lucky those who got to see Brian sing this live. Last nights rendition of the Impossible Dream by Brain Stokes Mitchell took my breath away and brought tears to my eyes. For me, Ted Kennedy was a kind and wonderful human being, not a perfect man, but one with flaws and faults who in spite of them lived a life of service and was a voice to those who needed it most. He will be sorely missed.
This was good, but I thought his performance last night at the tribute for Edward M. Kennedy at the JFK Library was excellent, accompanied byonly a piano. Mr. Mitchell knocked it out of the ballpark!!

This is great....... BUT.... there was an even better video on youtiube of BSM singing this song, ecorded live at a Tony awards ceremony; he was in full costume etc. And it was a superb rendition. Just truly magical. I just came on to watch it again, as I do regularly when I am feeling in need of inspioration. And of course some SOB has removed it due to 'terms violation.' I dont like the Rhydian one Im afraid. It is too over-produced. The beauty of Mitchell's performance is that he has a real natural style. I think Rhydian has a fine voice but I dont like his style.

theres a glitch in the info. This is actually the Conference centre not the convention centre. That person probably didn't know.
Anyway brian is amazing when he sings he put so much feeling into his songs its like he becomes the character in the song

I just happen to catch some of Edward Kennedy's memorial and this guy came on, and he looked like someone I had seen on television but I just could not place him, than his name came on the screem, than I remembered that he started on Trapper John MD. Than I see that he sings one of my favorites song. Thanks Brian

Thats fine rossmcl177 everyone has their own taste, I like both. Rhyd sings it better live, but when record producers get hold of if in a studio, its never the same.Lucky those who got to see Brian sing this live. Does he ever come to England, love his voice but I don't really follow him ,so really don't know what he gets up to.

Last nights rendition of the Impossible Dream by Brain Stokes Mitchell took my breath away and brought tears to my eyes. For me, Ted Kennedy was a kind and wonderful human being, not a perfect man, but one with flaws and faults who in spite of them lived a life of service and was a voice to those who needed it most. He will be sorely missed.

This was good, but I thought his performance last night at the tribute for Edward M. Kennedy at the JFK Library was excellent, accompanied byonly a piano. Mr. Mitchell knocked it out of the ballpark!!

What a wonderful song! I am a new fan of Brian Mitchell Stokes, and this inspiration song! I especially like the version played at Senator Kennedy's funeral.

when you think of the mary jo kopechne incident, these words are the opposite of the teddy kennedy we knew...he was never brave nor did he right the wrong, nor did he try when his arms were too weary, nor did he reach the unreachable star....he led a good life, but he was no hero, just another poor human with faults and foibles

It's as if the song were written for Teddy, and for Moynihan, for Wellstone, for King. Teddy was the promise of the Kennedy legacy, and he leaves its greatest mark.

Wish I could have been there. This song is a perfect tribute to a man of indomitable spirit. Teddy will live on, in the soon to be enacted universal health care bill that should bear his name. Long live the Kennedys!

Yes he will be performing this evening. This performance was very uneven and pitchy, and out of tune for the first 1 1/2 minutes...BUT he finished quite well delivering at the end. Good luck tonight.

This is great....... BUT.... there was an even better video on youtiube of BSM singing this song, ecorded live at a Tony awards ceremony; he was in full costume etc. And it was a superb rendition. Just truly magical. I just came on to watch it again, as I do regularly when I am feeling in need of inspioration. And of course some SOB has removed it due to 'terms violation.' I just want to thank that vigilant person killing something that made so many people happy. :(

I dont like the Rhydian one Im afraid. It is too over-produced. The beauty of Mitchell's performance is that he has a real natural style. I think Rhydian has a fine voice but I dont like his style.
And meanshile of course the BSM Tony version has been removed again. Whoever is removing it - look at how many people agreed with my post above. does it makje you feel good to make so many people unhappy???

@rossmcl177 I remember exactly the performance you are talking about. I t was saved as one of my Favourites. But was removed by WMG. But he is still amazing, I hope one day to get it back. If anybody that still has that recording and may be able to post. Please Post !!!!
