I was at this gig, I remember seeing Alan McGee twidleing the mixing knobs up stair ? . Also remember seeing Kevin and Belinda at the Suger gig here in199....4 Bob should tour with MBV sometime.
I remember listening to this album in 89. To me it sounded like ecstasy felt at the time. Me being into indie,spacemen3 etc. Really captured the time and all that. Trivial I know!
I saw their gig in Denver a few weeks ago. OMFG, so worth the wait. Best show I have seen in over 20 years. No fucking joke. MBV are amazing. If Kevin Shields decides to finally release a new album under the "MBV" moniker, Something tells me it will be worthy of their name. However, how can one improve upon a perfect record? "Loveless" is easily one of the greatest records of the latter 20th century. Bilinda, you are a GODDESS. My left ear is still in pain. Blissful, beautiful pain.
kevin uses a guvnor distortion (marshall pedals),a lot of reverb (a lot) digitech whammy , big muff, boss digital delay, equalizer, boss tremolo pan , these is only a few pedals he has many more, and of course his talent
I think he actually uses the marshall shredmaster, I could be wrong. Bilinda uses a Rat II and I think I can hear the Rat in a lot of Kevin's parts too. Never used a Big Muff I'm pretty sure. You can actually get that detuned lead part he does just using a quadraverb (100% wet reverb) and an overdriven amp, just pick with the whammy bar in your hand.
Hah. Y'know, I always figured they got the "ooo ooo" noises out of their guitars. It never once occurred to me that it might be Belinda Butcher doing background vox.
it's probably tough to sing in pitch when you're using your whammy bar to strum. maybe we should send him though the t-pain autotune/mellowdyne program? Then we'd have a MBV top 40 hit!
This is my favorite song of theirs because it is so chaotic, but peaceful at the same time. It's all emotions into one, but not. I have yet to hear a more amazing song then this. Thanks for putting this up!
Funny you are talking about the guitars. Bilinda used a Jazzmaster too. Check out the pink metal guitar she's playing in this, however - it's hilarious. Still sounds awesome though.
i haven't seen much live stuff, so i decided to see if anybody put up footage from the reunion shows if they have happened yet, but i find this stuff and it's blowin' my mind!!!
My pleasure. I heard the CD version of this song at least a hundred times. This is the only song I will never understand, how anybody could wrote it. Everything is weird and original -rhythm, melody of the declaimed singing, and the melody and arrangement of this song at all. I dont know similar piece, It's pure magic.
How do you get a guitar sound like that?

88/89 was the best time to see them live. 'Isn't Anything' is unmatched.

Yeah, there aren't many good quality vids of them live. There's one at the fuji rock festival a couple of years ago playing To Here Knows When.

when it's 2 Am and you have to go school in a few hours, and you can't sleep, 30 times is a lot.

They also use jaguars. They use both the jazzmaster and the jaguar.
LifeofXes 3 years ago
I chose to play a Jazzmaster because J Mascis plays one, but it is so cool that Kevin Shields played one too!!!
