Why is every1 calling it a dust duvil. Never heard of such. This is a whirlywind a big 1 for gawler region! Never seen 1 this big! Good fun to watch. Glad it's not a tornado or cyclone tho because I only live 15 mins away

it looks like a dust devil but they form on hot dry days and don't connect to the clouds. this however this on a stormy day and looks like its connecting to the clouds so I'm not sure

Actually, it's NOT a tornado. It's what's called a 'Dust Devil' or 'Willy-Willy'. The way it's created is similar to but not the same as a tornado. Dust devils can rip the roof off your house but they are generally not that big. This is an example of a big one, although I have seen bigger near Alice Springs years ago.

yah for a tornado it seems to have too little upward thrust and intensity in general, even though it gets pretty intense toward the end...

But the shape itself looks much more like a dust devil or landspout than a tornado that touches fown from a storm cloud - did you ever look up to see if there was a funnel cloud above it?

its possible that this was a land spout.. which is a weak tornado that forms out of a strong thunderstorm.

It baffles me! I cant believe how far across the country those things were appearing.. it felt really errie outside when i stopped to take photos.

Even in the last couple of years Broken Hill has had a couple of 'mini cyclones' that have selectively destroyed houses. I'll find out if dust storms have increased as well.

Looks like the public will have to do our own research because i havent heard a thing from the weather bruro.

Early march this year I was driving from Broken Hill to Adelaide and saw about 100 of these forming in groups of 3 to 5.. as soon as one would end another would form.. They were massive like that one. Never in my life have i seen any that big before and especially never that many!! Usually only 3-4 small ones. These ones had funnels that reached right up in the sky... wtfs going on?!

bloody hell thats a fair effort. going back some weeks now we too around the roseworthy area would see large ones most days, and like you a few more then one. but yeah, struck us blind that one went through the business's like it did. never really had them that big that close. one of the old blokes at work had never seen one like this in all the many many years hes been here. like you, whats going on?!

What ever the name, this thing was very bloody odd for where it hit. there are always small willy willys but nothing ever this big on this path.
