Don't be a fool, this lens is rubbish, pay the extra couple of hundred and get the 50mm 1.4 USM, its much better, quality is better, build quality is better. and soooo much fun!!!
@insanitystudio Can't argue with the price, I did test out the 1.8 but I much prefer the 1.4, I'm not a big fan of the pentagonal effect that the 1.8 gives with bokeh. 1.4 offers I believe 9 aperture blades, so its gives a much smoother effect when using a wide aperture.
@Dannysubliminal 1.2L the way to go. Haha too bad I can't afford it. And I agree the 1.4>1.8 ANY DAY. I used the 1.8 and it was actually the worst lens I've ever used. I would have preferred to stick to my kit lens 18-55 over it (not that I use that, of course) haha
Im sorry but i have this Lens, I'm shooting on a 5D and the Lens was Cheap very cheap infact it's only £70-£100 but hey listen, you hear that? yes the sound of horrible plastic rubbing together as you press the shutter, as for the image quality i think it's quite a nice and the Bokeh from F1.8 is nice, but if you want a better all round lens id fork out the extra £170 and get the F1.4 50mm lens.
Or get a 35mm f 2 which is almost identical as putting a 50mm on a full size sensor camera. Also the cannon 35mm f 2 is better made than the 50mm f 1.8 and is just better lol.
Just got this today. Can anyone tell me how to select aperture when on video mode? (I have a canon 550d). Is it automatically 1.8?? Please someone help lol :(
Does the crop factor effect your image with this lens? Because i have some old 50mm FD mount lenses that i put on my Canon 1000D, and the first thing i noticed was my angle of view was made smaller (i found out later this was due to the crop factor), because my camera is not a full frame camera. Does the 50mm lens in this review have the same issue or can it be used with camera with a cropped sensor?
The focal length of a lens is measured the same as it always was. The crop factor basically causes an "effective" difference in FL, but the EOS lens will work just fine on a film *or* digital camera. What you have to look out for are the EF-S lenses, which protrude into the body of the camera, and would interfere with the operation of the mirror on a 35mm film camera. The 1.6 dSLRs take both types just fine. See if your local camera shop will let you try the lens b4 you buy.
I've owned this lens for a few years now and give it two thumbs up for the quality of shot and price. I use it on a Canon 40D camera. Happy shooting ....CHEERS!!!
hey if anyone is looking to buy the canon 50mm 1.8 lens for cheap im selling mine on ebay jus search mzawesome and the lens will put up low price to and its brand new!!
this is my go to lens for portrait/gatherings/events/bbq's etc. also great for macro/closeup work. love the bokeh/blurry effect you can get with the right settings dialed in on your dslr.
this should be a kit lens imo! well worth the $100
this lens takes lovely pictures.. fantastic for picking out your subject.. and does a real good job of advertising style pictures.
Light weight and great price.. bit noisey on the AF which maybe a problem for video but using MF all is forgiven.
Being able to isolate your subject with the very wide aperture is great fun even when perfect composition cant be achieved or just as good with some well planned composition, making it a fantastic lens to have in the bag.
while changing the aperture with the camera on AV mode...do you hear a "click" as well, as you're changing the aperture ? it's not as loud as the focus, but still noticeable .
and it's really bad while filming...because if you aren't in manual mode... the cam changes the aperture automaticaly for the correct exposure...and because of the "clicky" noise, you also see the 1-shaky-frame on the video
HI Roy from Ireland, Great video. I am looking for some advice. I am slowly (when i have the money) putting together a selection of good lens for my Canon 7D. I have the Sigma, as well as a Tamron 70-200mm 1:2.8. What lens would you recommend to compliment the above mentioned lenses, I could use for city breaks (e.g. shooting people, moving cars, some nice buildings, that sort of thing). A small aperature number at about 20/25 metres range, or so. Ask me any question to clarify.
I bought this lens a couple of days ago and I love it! You just have to be extremely careful with it because it's plastic and can break easily, unlike other lenses that are metal.
I must be the luckiest son of a gun in town, because while removing my "already opened" camera bag from my car, I accidentally tossed this lens to the ground, and it miraculously didnt even break. After all the controversy about the build quality of this camera, I can tell that this didnt make any diference. Actually I believe that if it was heavier, it could have broken something inside. Lucky me it didnt...Jeesh
I just bought this lens, and Im amazed by the definition that you get for only 120 euros. It is a little bit noisy when compared to other lenses, but nothing that someone hould notice, actually when shooting at the street it is barely audible. It is blurs at the sides, and its really very sharp at the center, so you have to really think before you decide what part of the subject you want to shoot first. Really nice buy, everybody should get this, unless you can afford the 50 mm f1.4 model.
I'm having focusing issues and image quality issues with this lens. The images aren't terrible, but they aren't amazing. However, considering the price, it's a great lens. If you're looking to do high quality photos then I'd definately look at the 1.4 version or something else. It's good as a general lens for most people though. Nice review.
It would be nice if they made another 50mm 1.8 with better build quality. Yes, they have the 50mm 1.4, but the 50mm 1.8 is already really good optically it just needs a better build.
I wouldn't mind paying an extra $50 for a better casing. How about a couple more blades as well?
Not at all, but it feels really cheap. I wouldn't mind paying a little extra for better build quality. That is the only thing this lens needs to be perfect for me.
Hi, thanks for the video. I´m confused between to buy the 50mm f/1.8 and the canon lens 35mm f/2 1:3. My main goal is make some good videos. Can you help me with your opinion please? Thanks in advance
Hi Rob, i´m confused between between buying the 50mm f/1.8 and the 35mm EF f/2. Can you help me please? My main goal is to make videos of good quality an definition with my new canon eos 550d. Thank you in advance
i currently bought a 17-85mm lens as my general purpose lens for a bit of everythingg to replace my 28-80mm lens hwoever for portrait shots iw as considering chucking in another hundred dollars to get the 50mm...would this be an alright thing to do..or will my 17-85mm work just fine??
@shyer012 The 17-85 will work fine in most situations - however in low-light, or where you want that extra-narrow depth of field - the f/1.8 50mm would be a nice addition to your glass collection.
@scalespeeder well i'm new to this so, I wonder what's the difference of taking photos as he mentioned with 17-85 f/1.8 and 50 f/1.8 on the same distance? Why is it better?^^
I'm very sure it's awesome value but maybe one shouldn't overhype it too much? It's not perfect and there's waaay sharper 50s out there, for much more of course.
@ashplaystation3slim I manually focused a store display model 18-55mm IS kit lens really fast and hard with the switch in AF and also while I was in the middle of focusing with the camera. I then attempted to auto-focus on several things and focused without any problems. They are not as fragile as many people think but I still wouldn't risk it with my own lenses :P
@ashplaystation3slim dont worry it wont get damaged like that my friends usually do it with my lens mistankenly and its working fine till now .. if it gets damaged it wont focus anymore and it will take so long time u will notice it ... company knows people use it so they made it that way but they just warn people not to do it ...
nice vid. im going to be using it with the 550d, and the standard lens cap is 58mm. so it wont fit on this lens. does this lens some with its own lens cap?
When I take pics with this at anything smaller than f/1.8, I often see pentagon-shaped "bokeh" in the background. Also, when focusing on bright lights, I get spokes that flare out from the light source that do not come to a sharp point. Will photography snobs see these and stick his nose up in the air at me?
DON'T DROP IT! I dropped mine and it blew up. Ridiculously fragile lens. Canon should get it's butt kicked for producing such a piece of trashy plastic!
Everyone bangs on about how noisy this lens is. Yes there is some noise, but having heard your video, it isn't as bad as I thought it would be. Going to invest in one of these soon.
So, the camera will always have one point in focus and the rest blured. I couldn't photograph a landscape if I wanted because everything would be blured. So, it's a secondary lens because everybody want a lens that can focus a whole landscape as well as a primary lens. Damn, I'll have to change my camera choice because this shit is fixed all the fucking time. ARGH!
The beauty of the 50mm is that you can have that selective focus look at the larger apertures, say f/1.8 to 3.5, but then you can stop down to say f/8 or f/16 for shots where everything is in focus.
@menoziinrevoltado You have to look at this as a great feature, if you know how to use it. When it's focussing to (nearly) infinity, like with a landscape shot, you don't have that much problem at lower apertures to get everything in focus. I suggest reading some articles about use of aperture widths.
What you're saying about the polarizing filters not rotating is a good point.. I haven't thought about that. I have this lens myself and find it incredibly sharp at 2.0 and 2.8. That's my favourite aperture for this one :D
The 50mm f/1.8 can blur the background (or foreground) more than a 3.5 lens.
This lens is much sharper than a kit lens at the same apertures. Shoot at f/5.6 or f/8 and it's as sharp as any lens out there, including "L" lenses.
Having a 1.8 aperture means that, if you have to, you can shoot in low light levels, even indoors without a flash, without having to pump up your ISO too high (which causes noise).
Being a prime lens (no zoom) it forces you to move, improving your composition skills.
lol. after reading my question again.. I feel so dumb.
Recently I've been reading and learning about lenses.
The lower the f number, the beter the bokeh, better in low light condition, shallower depth of field and sharper picture. I didn't know alot of things before.
Btw, recent compact from samsung has 1.8 lens. But ofcourse, DSLR will always be better than compacts.
@HatroVille It let it more light, so in low-light conditions you can use lower iso (less noise) and/or get lower shutter times (less chance of you or object moving), the difference in depth of field is more of a side effect and I guess that optically it may be considered "a flaw" but as far as picture output goes many likes it, and you can always close it down to get broader DOF.
I want to get a good portrait lens. Would 50mm work for that? I'm thinking either I could get to 50 now, or wait a year and get a 60mm. Or maybe 60mm is still too wide. This is for a cropped sensor.
The only difference between this lens and L glass is that the L glass produces images with a wider range of colors. The 50mm f/1.8 II images are slightly, and I mean slightly "flat"... but... with a little tweaking in post production one would be hard pressed to tell the difference.
This review was very helpful! After your detailed explaination, I was able to see past it's "cheap" build and negative comments in other reviews. I went ahead an ordered it today! Can't wait for the results!!
Hi, I've been looking at buying a *relatively* cheap prime for a couple of weeks... I've looked at the 50mm 1.4 and the 85mm 1.8, and then I realised that many people (even semi-pros) seem to be delighted with this lens. For about 3x the price, is it really worth it to go for the next step up 50mm 1.4?
3.5 or 2.8, or more correctly f/3.5 and f/2.8 relates to the size of the hole that lets the light in the lens (the aperture).
With a bigger aperture (smaller f-number, eg f/1.8) you can shoot at the same shutter speed in less light, or as you say, have a shorter depth of field.
However, remember that all lenses perform best a couple of stops up from wide open anyway - so by having an f/1.8 lens it means that it will take sharper shots at f3.5 and above.
@AttemptingToBeBusy Both are cheap, this one is just close to free =p, compare the price of the 1.4 against the 1.2L and the comparision may be different. Check reviews, I don't like the boke of any of these primes. I would had got the Sigma 30/1.4 and the 85/1.8. For some reason looking at flickr bokeh shots at for instance 50/1.4 I think the Nikon shoots seem to look better than the Canon shoots, but Nikon seem to also use more aperture blades and circular apertures ..
hi..i was just wondering..i'm new to this..but is this lens better than the EF-S 18 - 55 mm IS lens?..is this worth buying cus i already have the EF-S 18 - 55 mm IS lens.. so yeah..hope to get an answer from u..tnx
Better is the wrong word, it's different. The 50mm 1.8 gives you a smaller depth of field for those blurry background shots, but you're sacrificing zoom and IS.
I'd say stick with the 18-55 until you've got to know that lens better, and you feel the need for a fast prime.
@MAJAsins As far as you're shooting 50mm it will be better, for everything else it can't do it .. So .. But it's dirt cheap so you got nothing to worry about, if you need a faster lens (letting in more light) or background blur go for it. If you can afford it and think it's ok look at the Sigma 30/1.4 to, I'd rather pick that one, and if you want to shoot portraits instead look at the 85/1.8. You could also get a brighter zoom lens like the Tamron 17-50/2.8 VC or something such.
@arzy2008 The 85/1.8 would probably be better for portrait, the 50s where the normal primes for full-frame cameras, but on a cheaper APS-C something like the Sigma 30/1.4 would do better. (And I would definitly get that or their 50 over the Canons, I think their boke look much better, the 30 mm Sigma isn't sharp on the edges though.)
Canon 50mm 1.8f....Cheapest lens on the market and its an absolute pile of SHIT !...pick one of these up and you'll know exactly what im taking about

@neekface Hi! um if you don't already know how to change aperture on your 550D all you need to do is..
(hopefully on manual mode)
Hold down the "Av button" while using the main dial (the wheel thingy)
OR!
You can always use the "Q" button and select your settings from there :)

On a crop sensor you get the field of view of an 80mm lens but no the perspective distortion of an 80mm.
This is important if you are thinking this lens will give you compression and thus a shallower DOF on a crop sensor. It won't.

i currently bought a 17-85mm lens as my general purpose lens for a bit of everythingg to replace my 28-80mm lens hwoever for portrait shots iw as considering chucking in another hundred dollars to get the 50mm...would this be an alright thing to do..or will my 17-85mm work just fine??
shyer012 1 year ago
@shyer012 The 17-85 will work fine in most situations - however in low-light, or where you want that extra-narrow depth of field - the f/1.8 50mm would be a nice addition to your glass collection.
scalespeeder 1 year ago 2
@scalespeeder well i'm new to this so, I wonder what's the difference of taking photos as he mentioned with 17-85 f/1.8 and 50 f/1.8 on the same distance? Why is it better?^^
lolish1234 1 year ago
I'm very sure it's awesome value but maybe one shouldn't overhype it too much? It's not perfect and there's waaay sharper 50s out there, for much more of course.

How can you tell if your lens is damaged ? i accidently tried to mf when it was AF ,
ashplaystation3slim 1 year ago
@ashplaystation3slim If it still focusses ok in AF mode, I guess its ok!
scalespeeder 1 year ago 7
@ashplaystation3slim I manually focused a store display model 18-55mm IS kit lens really fast and hard with the switch in AF and also while I was in the middle of focusing with the camera. I then attempted to auto-focus on several things and focused without any problems. They are not as fragile as many people think but I still wouldn't risk it with my own lenses :P
SeikoPsycho 1 year ago
@ashplaystation3slim dont worry it wont get damaged like that my friends usually do it with my lens mistankenly and its working fine till now .. if it gets damaged it wont focus anymore and it will take so long time u will notice it ... company knows people use it so they made it that way but they just warn people not to do it ...

nice vid. im going to be using it with the 550d, and the standard lens cap is 58mm. so it wont fit on this lens. does this lens some with its own lens cap?

@TheFilm35 yes, it will come with caps for the front and rear of the lens.

seriously guys, learn more about concept of depth of field with your f/stop before you whine about blurring. n00bs!
siliconsurf 1 year ago
When I take pics with this at anything smaller than f/1.8, I often see pentagon-shaped "bokeh" in the background. Also, when focusing on bright lights, I get spokes that flare out from the light source that do not come to a sharp point. Will photography snobs see these and stick his nose up in the air at me?
SeikoPsycho 1 year ago
@SeikoPsycho No.

Everyone bangs on about how noisy this lens is. Yes there is some noise, but having heard your video, it isn't as bad as I thought it would be. Going to invest in one of these soon.
FunnyBoysFilms 1 year ago
So, the camera will always have one point in focus and the rest blured. I couldn't photograph a landscape if I wanted because everything would be blured. So, it's a secondary lens because everybody want a lens that can focus a whole landscape as well as a primary lens. Damn, I'll have to change my camera choice because this shit is fixed all the fucking time. ARGH!
menoziinrevoltado 1 year ago
@menoziinrevoltado Er... no.
The beauty of the 50mm is that you can have that selective focus look at the larger apertures, say f/1.8 to 3.5, but then you can stop down to say f/8 or f/16 for shots where everything is in focus.
Cheers, Rob.
scalespeeder 1 year ago
@scalespeeder I got your point but...
Wow, f/16? That's fucking dark, dude.
Can I photograph the sun with such a dark aperture?
Lol.
menoziinrevoltado 1 year ago
if you shoot on manual and adjust your shutter speed correctly, it doesnt matter what your aperature is
NightriderSam 1 year ago
@menoziinrevoltado
background will be blurred if u shoot at the lowest f1.8 but if u open it to say f5.0 etc it will be non blurred
aDJmProduction 1 year ago
@menoziinrevoltado You have to look at this as a great feature, if you know how to use it. When it's focussing to (nearly) infinity, like with a landscape shot, you don't have that much problem at lower apertures to get everything in focus. I suggest reading some articles about use of aperture widths.

What you're saying about the polarizing filters not rotating is a good point.. I haven't thought about that. I have this lens myself and find it incredibly sharp at 2.0 and 2.8. That's my favourite aperture for this one :D
Walcor87 2 years ago
I'm quite new to understanding Lenses...is it that with F1.8, you can blur the background MORE than the kit lens which is F3.5 -5.6?
So this lense is bacally about Blurring the background more? if only that's the reason, why big hype? ...
I wanna learn more that's all, not insulting anyone or any product.
HatroVille 2 years ago
The 50mm f/1.8 can blur the background (or foreground) more than a 3.5 lens.
This lens is much sharper than a kit lens at the same apertures. Shoot at f/5.6 or f/8 and it's as sharp as any lens out there, including "L" lenses.
Having a 1.8 aperture means that, if you have to, you can shoot in low light levels, even indoors without a flash, without having to pump up your ISO too high (which causes noise).
Being a prime lens (no zoom) it forces you to move, improving your composition skills.
scalespeeder 2 years ago
@HatroVille Why are you looking at DSLRs if you don't care about a shallow DOF?
You can do almost everything a DSLR can do with a compact these days, apart from this.
willieturnip 1 year ago
@willieturnip
lol. after reading my question again..
HatroVille 1 year ago
@HatroVille It let it more light, so in low-light conditions you can use lower iso (less noise) and/or get lower shutter times (less chance of you or object moving), the difference in depth of field is more of a side effect and I guess that optically it may be considered "a flaw" but as far as picture output goes many likes it, and you can always close it down to get broader DOF.

I want to get a good portrait lens. Would 50mm work for that? I'm thinking either I could get to 50 now, or wait a year and get a 60mm. Or maybe 60mm is still too wide. This is for a cropped sensor.
ManicEightBall 2 years ago
The 50mm f/1.8 is a great portrait lens, it's slightly telephoto on a cropped sensor.
I'd get it now, then think about going longer, to say a 135mm, or wider to the very useful 28mm.
Cheers, Rob.
scalespeeder 2 years ago
@ManicEightBall Get the 85, or if you want a macro maybe the 100/2.8 macro and use that for portraits to.
JohanKH 1 year ago
This lens is INSANELY sharp!!!!
It's every bit as sharp as L glass.
The only difference between this lens and L glass is that the L glass produces images with a wider range of colors. The 50mm f/1.8 II images are slightly, and I mean slightly "flat"... but... with a little tweaking in post production one would be hard pressed to tell the difference.

AttemptingToBeBusy 2 years ago
What you'd be paying for is much better build quality, faster AF, and that extra stop of light. I'd go with the 50 1.8, and the 28 2.8 as well.
scalespeeder 2 years ago
which is the differents between 2,8 and 3,5?
veoquenoesunproblema 2 years ago
besides the D.O. Field!
veoquenoesunproblema 2 years ago
3.5 or 2.8, or more correctly f/3.5 and f/2.8 relates to the size of the hole that lets the light in the lens (the aperture).
With a bigger aperture (smaller f-number, eg f/1.8) you can shoot at the same shutter speed in less light, or as you say, have a shorter depth of field.
However, remember that all lenses perform best a couple of stops up from wide open anyway - so by having an f/1.8 lens it means that it will take sharper shots at f3.5 and above.
Cheers, Rob.
scalespeeder 2 years ago

MAJAsins 2 years ago
Better is the wrong word, it's different. The 50mm 1.8 gives you a smaller depth of field for those blurry background shots, but you're sacrificing zoom and IS.
I'd say stick with the 18-55 until you've got to know that lens better, and you feel the need for a fast prime.
Cheers, Rob.
scalespeeder 2 years ago
@MAJAsins As far as you're shooting 50mm it will be better, for everything else it can't do it .. So .. But it's dirt cheap so you got nothing to worry about, if you need a faster lens (letting in more light) or background blur go for it. If you can afford it and think it's ok look at the Sigma 30/1.4 to, I'd rather pick that one, and if you want to shoot portraits instead look at the 85/1.8. You could also get a brighter zoom lens like the Tamron 17-50/2.8 VC or something such.

Is this lens for only portret?
arzy2008 2 years ago
@arzy2008 You can use this lens for anything apart from close macro - you just move your feet to get the framing you need!
scalespeeder 2 years ago
Ok, thanks for answer! Yesterday I use this lens for landscape. It was hard to use :-( Very hard. Regards from Russia!
arzy2008 2 years ago
@arzy2008 The 85/1.8 would probably be better for portrait, the 50s where the normal primes for full-frame cameras, but on a cheaper APS-C something like the Sigma 30/1.4 would do better. (And I would definitly get that or their 50 over the Canons, I think their boke look much better, the 30 mm Sigma isn't sharp on the edges though.)
