@CapKorzeniowski , the IAF kicked out the Gripen from the competition for the MMRCA . India will make his choice betwen Eurofighter and Rafale , for a total of 126 planes .
@indianajonesanaheim2 Gripen is much, much cheaper, you can't compare them..... Just the fact that gripen is a pretty old plane but is still top 5 in the world and the cheapest one of te top planes makes me wonder why so few countries use it. When gripen was new it was the very best plane in the world, but people still bought the more expensive planes from russia and america, why? Propably because suck up to eather USA or Russia. Sweden does'nt have the "diplomatic push" like USA or Russia...
@indianajonesanaheim2 You shouldn't compare the two crafts directly, but better think what would be better for a country to buy. 1 F-22 or 4 JAS-39? On interception, I am not sure that 1 F-22 can make it up against 4 JAS-39 (the F-22 will run out of missiles, lol). And in strike role, aside from the fact that the F-22 is not a strike craft, 4 aicrafts can deliver more payload and in many places than one, and if the F-22 tryies to intercept them, it cannot be in all places at once.
Look at Europeans, they always do that turn after take-off for a demo. Americans like to show the raw power of their fighter aircraft and usually pull straight up and accelerate while doing aileron rolls up through the clouds. I like the American way better.
@JetMechMA .Relly ..strait up ..it show only a mind that has no imagination and its the swedes that do the turnoff since it was practised to use in roadbase configuration with being outclassed by the enemey (russian airplanes).
@Millinillion Any plane can turn after takeoff. Only a high performance fighter aircraft of the first order can do a takeoff roll in 3200 feet and climb at over 30,000 feet per minute straight up out of sight. Are Swedes up to the challenge? I think they are, by the way.
@JetMechMA .Curently BAE and swedes are working on a aircraftcarrier version, and both J-35 and J-37 could take off from 3200 feet roadbase, but underpowered by todays standard
@Millinillion I see what you are saying. You know, the greatest compliment I ever heard about the Swedes was, back some time ago, some American engineers were convinced that they had made the tiniest drill bit in the world. They sent it to the Swedes to brag. The Swedes drilled a hole in it and sent it back to them !
@Millinillion Gripen looks awesome to me. The only concern I would have is how do the canards affect the pilot's visibility. But overall I would think that the canard design is more agile than tail mounted pitch controls. Seems pretty forward thinking to me.
@JetMechMA I got that totally wrong. It was Swiss watch makers who drilled a hole in America's tiniest drill bit. Sorry. My compliments to the Swedes still stand.
(Mig35,F16,Gripen,F18) are considerate obsolete, outclassed and fail to test requirement conducted by india, that confirm rumor, test are based on merit.
Obsolete, test fail - Mig35,f16,f18
Redundance with tejas, the gripen NG - to poor capabilites
@rafaletiger Where did you get that info? No releases on such things have been made by either the IAF nor any of the Airplane manufacturers. Saab and the IAF have however said a few good and bad things about the planes. The IAF said they were really pleased with the results of the Gripen during the flight trials and that its AESA was probably one of the best ones in the M-MRCA. The IAF also made some comments about the Rafale saying it performed really well too.
@rafaletiger And I don't really know what you mean by "poor capabilities". The Gripen is an excellent multi-roll platform, with swing-roll capabilities aswell as having an international ease of use. It can use both European, indigenous and American weapons, it was created in the first place to be able to fight even with the loss of air-superiority against the Russians, and its avionics and communication is perhaps arguably some of the most sophisticated equipment in the world.
@rafaletiger From the rumors I've heard from Saab, the Gripen was cut from the shortlist of the M-MRCA due to two main reasons. And that is because the IAF thought their Gripen IN's wouldn't be able to get their AESA radars on time (since Sweden expressed that we'd want our AESA's before anyone else), aswell as being too similar to the Tejas (eventhough the Tejas is outdated, nowhere near as good and just meant for India to have its own 20-year delayed fighter).
@rafaletiger And the M-MRCA was at first a replacement for the light, single-engine MiG-21 fighters. But when the Tejas got delayed, a new similar fighter jet system was to be introduced. The Gripen NG is basically what the Indians hoped the Tejas could be. It's better in every single way, it's much more advanced and the perfect candidate to replace a single-engine fighter. I mean India already operates several very expensive dual-engine fighters (Su-30MKI, MiG-29K, PAK-FA) so why another one?
I agree, Gripen probably would not have a chance 1-1 against a F22.. on the other hand, F22 is extremely expensive, it shakes itself apart in flight and needs 30+ hours of maintenance for every hour of flight.. and a skin so thin even small arms could shoot it down US will NOT build any more of them, ever. And it starts to look like the F35 will be a dud too, not as stealthy as advertised, closing in on F22 cost, not very agile or maneuverable.. and something about not being able to take rain?
Stealth isn't the same now as it once was. The radar and other sensor technology has developed to make much of this capability less valuble. Stealth planes are also noutoriously maintenance demanding regarding the state that the surface area of the plane has to be perfect to become stealthy. Stealth is soon a dead technology because the radar and sensors. If you are about to fight in weak countries they might not be able to see the fighter, but otherwise it's a waste of money to go for stealth.
I had thise jets buzzing my heads all day long during my military service as a helo mechanic.. Gripen is a nice aircraft. But i cant replace my love for the J-35 ;)
rafale's a multi-task aircraft, better in any cofiguration with a better tech.onboard n 2 engine,it's faster etc.........and the price is not so more expensive than any other aircrafts.Of course if u listen the other manufacturers, they 'd qualify the Rafale inferior, which is a hype.
@tibotibo1976 i woudent say it has better technology, and i dont under stand the claim of being mutch more agressive? i asume your reffering the the offensive capability.
The concept of JAS-39 Gripen is to make new aircraft with already known materials. This is why there is many US or UK stuff inside. This is also the reason of its price, because of R&D budget reduction, compared to Rafale or Eurofighter. In fact, the Gripen is not for poor countries, but for countries that doesn't need the lastest fighter, but that don't want (for both economic and political reasons) buy F-16, F-15, Eurofighter or Rafale. Even this, Gripen is a great fighter.
@SillieWous Its not useless, it is a very small plane. and therefore stealthy to a certain grade. It makes up for the Stealth capability to fight without runways, using ordinary 1-1 lane roads, and only 5 men readying the plane in 15 minuttes. Low Logistics, Good survivability Vs. High logistics and supreme mission capability.
@JVC7400 I think it's more useful to have a completely stealthy plane than kind of being stealthy cause if I would be in a war I think i want to have maximum protection instead of being able to start a mission earlier
@SillieWous Of course, its not stealthy, but to a certain grade (not very much). of course in war scenario the F-35 will be good in the start, but when the airfields are bombed, it takes to much logistics, however it can take of vertically without full armament and fuel. here, the gripen can do with full fuel and full armament on a 1-1 lane road. For the money you give, the gripen is far by the best aircraft you can get. But the F-35 has a wider mission capability.
Once again the Gripen was used as a scapegoat for spending insane money on something that has lots of prestige but will have total costs that are twice as high while delivering half the operational capacity :-D
Compare the 15 Austrian Typhoons with the 14 Czech Gripens. The Czechs fly more, can perform more, and for less money. Had the Austrians had the Rafale instead they would have been equally inferior as an Air Force compared to the Czechs ! Indians = silly people :-D
Gripen is cheaper than Rafale and Typhoon ! but no match between them for the performance ! Gripen is for poor countries like India or Thailand etc... please , don't talk abour our great Rafale , ok ! you want Rafale ? ok , give us your money and so all ! ....
@dat8r1 We are not poor. We are much larger economy than yours. Much larger foreign reserves and larger purchasing power. As for now, it lies between Rafale and Eurofighter. But Indians are more tilted towards Rafale due to its quality and very good relationship between India and France are another factor for going for Rafale. RAFALE is an awesome Jet with all the capabilities and with AESA later on it will be the deadliest package.
@dat8r1 from Thailand and we are not poor I think the RTA choose the Grippen because of the cheaper overall cost maintainence and the famillarity with its engines. Anyway Saab gave a very good offer. BTW whose buying yr Rafale. Currently RTA have signed a contract to upgrade it's F16 fleet to C and D models
@dat8r1 YOUR GREAT RAFALE?? :DD Sry dude you forget something... If it is so great, then why no countries buy it? They buy Typhoon's Grippen's but no one buys Rafale's. Why? Because its performances to cost ratio is the worst one... Besides no one trusts French enineering. :)
@zippyLTU Fighter jet deals are ~90% politics and ~10% of how good the airplane really is. I'd say the Eurofighter by far is the most troubled out of the European jets. It has the largest decrease in actual built planes compared to what the initial orders were, it has the highest price (almost in the league of the F-35) and is constantly facing problems regarding its capabilities. The Tranche 3 models of just recently got the air-ground capability due to the long delay of its targeting pod
@zippyLTU And BAE aswell as Lockheed Martin has a long history of bribing. BAE marketed the Gripen in Austria (when swedish reporters revealed Gripen-bribes) and BAE was leading the South African campaign (in which bribes probably have been revealed). Yet, Saab gets the blame for both of these and is hung out in media and in the world. The Rafale by far outshines the Eurofighters. The Gripen is smaller and cheaper however and is thus better for struggling economies or smaller nations.
@zippyLTU yes, and the media acts just as surprised everytime. The difference between Saab and all the others is that Saab is under constant watch from the Swedish media. TV4 has AGAIN tried to frame Saabs sale to South Africa. They just wont let it go. And they have arguments like "the wrong choice for South Africa" when Gripen truly is the only jet they'd be able to fly and operate considering that SAAF barely even affords to fly anything.
The F35 is meant to replace the F16 as a multi role fighter. The F22 is replacing the F15 as a Air Superiority Fighter.
Simply Put, all the kewl smoke and agility in the world does not save you from something shooting at you 30+ miles away that you can not detect is there.
Alright you indian slumdog curry munching snake charming cow worshiping bitches, who wants some of this! Bring it on you shit color skin bred for slavery stooges!
@snoop8492 You claim that the F15 C (never mind the attacker F15 E) would be able to destroy Gripen? F15 C is already losing to the latest SU-30 planes in Dogfights (old) and more recently in BVR aswell.
@snoop8492 hahah you funny little guy...the gripen WILL and CAN shoot down the F-15a/b/c/d and e without any problems remember the F-15 is old and an 3. gen plane not a 4 or 5 gen..the only advantage F-22 has is stealth but still if this little bugger managed to see the F-22 it would be bye bye to the F-22
@BadTim28 Stealth do not even exist, it's just a much smaller radar picture, but multiple radars with different frequencies and some computing they are visible enough.
Also the American fetish to add spec's to everything make their things heavy, large and with much heat trails. And if they turn on their own radar they are no longer hidden.
@BadTim28 im no fan of the F22 but in a dogfight the 22s vectored thrust would mean bye bye gripen. at longer ranges the 22 gets even more advantage due to its low radar signature, better radar and supercruise.
Like this plane more than most of the others on the race...newer design than all except EF. With the IN version its just what we need...cheaper than most of the others...robust and simple to fly, datalink and operate. Plus with the open architecture we can chose our avionics package and swing role balance..sorta MKI it. Cheap enough to get the fleet up to 300 odd if required. Cant do that with any of the others. Seen the cockpit...best in class along with EF. So its got my vote.
LOL indian air force has the world's highest crash rate LOL cowpiss curry shits cant fly
LOL inferior indians builds military airports 30 km from the Chinese border. LOL who the fuck build an military airport so close to the border??? a barrage of long range rocket is enough to fuck it up in 10 mins. LOL only indians are fucked up enough to do such thing
It's small (which is always good for stealth) and has several radar signature reducing features.
It is quite difficult to detect with radar and has done very well in the sneak game in international exercises.
So by what standard doesn't the Gripen have stealth - the F-22's ???
Yes - true !
But here is the deal: A strike force of Gripens WILL be able to sneak past F-22s and take out their bases. Gripen on the other hand can operate from ROADS. = Gripen wins :)
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
I dont want to be of disrespect but the gripen is totally behind the needs of nations like israel usa and rus. It has NO stealth ability, it has no compos metal capability, its modules are stone age wuen compared to the platforms of raptor eurofighter and sukkoi, no.... iaf only when I stands for iran or india, Israel will never use something like this. they build better airframes in the uav systems now.
Umm....the Ericcson AESA radar is a development of the same one in the Eurofighter. Can't be stone age when it's a later generation radar of your Eurofighter. The Gripen is highly advanced and does use composites. Don't know where you're getting your info, but Gripen is a smokin' aircraft. The NG version is much much better. More power, more range. It's no slouch.
i just don't get it with india. instead of increasing its defence budget,it should use a portion of the money getting rid of those slums in new delhi and house those poor people in a REAL home. its not like they are going to war with anyone anytime soon.
@Rockerheads india has been attack by pakistan and its terrorists friends and china and faces threats to this day. ten times as many indians get killed by muslim terrorists than americans. historically india was rich and advanced and this attracted muslim hordes who invaded resulting in centruries of occupation and decline. the strong army is to make sure this doesn;t happen again. there are slums in china, russia and even the usa too.
The most suitable plane for MMRCA. Just put conformal fuel tanks to increase its range and put EJ200 instead of GE F414 engine. Saab can do the engine change and there it would be maximum bang for buck without any sanction problem. And why spend more money on 4th gen when 5th gen is here in another 10 years ??

I'm brazilian and I think the Brazil should buy the Gripen (for the project FX-2, of the FAB modernization), but the president and the defence minister prefer the rafale, and probably the french aircraft will be buy.
To complete, the Gripen is a wonderful and very powerful and modern airplane.
@bmwman87 As a Norwegian I can only agree! My admiration for SAAB´s fighters through history is great. Well, your other military equipment manufactures like Bofors etc is quite amazing to! You are still #4 in the world when it comes to selling weapon system I believe?
India should sign partnership in JSF program with USA when F-35 enter service 2011 also of production. Seeing IAF with 3 5th Gen. Stealth Fighter Aircraft the FGFA, Medium Combat Aircraft, & F-35A/B Lightning would make India best & strongest air force in the region. F-35 is cheap, powerful/advance AESA radar, cool glass cockpit, good in air to ground, & good at air combat against China/Pakistan J-10/FC-20 & JF-17/FC-1 in the future. F-35 is being approve with upgraded & performance.
F-35 is invisible to radar & inferred harder for any 4.5 Generation fighter aircraft to track it or show up in glass cockpit. F-35 only used one glass cockpit. F-35 can fire missiles that it come pass enemy aircraft. F-35 pilot use Helmet Mounted Display System to turn his head and fire missiles without turning his aircraft. F-35 pilot Helmet Mounted Display System could turn into night vision to see enemy aircraft at night.
In ur dream you listen too much to crap Russian say that they had SAM that could shot down stealth aircraft. During Alaska patrol F-22 Raptor track Tu-95 the Tu-95 radar and glass screen doesn't show F-22 in radar. You listen too much to mammyland of Russia.
Im not russian and when i was in the army there were no plane in the world our army couldn't track. But then again we are the tip of the spear when it comes to radar technology.
The f-35 is not invisible but it does have a reduced radar signiture. It is a great multi role aircraft but i can understand why the iaf might choose the gripen.
actualy, compared to the f-22 it is rather economical with comparable performance. its not better than f22 but it comes close. it would be perfect for india
@foxinterspecial The performance of F-35 is not the key issue because stealth gives that plane a huge advantage. Real problem of F-35 is payload. It can carry only two air-to-air missiles in it's internal cargo hold and only these can be used if you want the plane to be invisble to radars.
poor performance? how can you even suggest that the VTOL power of a harrier, agility as an F-16 and low detection profile as an F-22, all in just one plane, can be beaten by this small plane? So sorry but I afraid that I disagree with you. The F-35 does worth every penny.
VTOL only 1 model. It doesn't have the agility of f16 (and gripen has more agility that f 16), and it has nowere nere the stealth of f22. and being small isn't something bad. Infact the f 35 only have good stealth in the front of the aircraft. BTW the f 35 doesnt even meet the requirement of a 5:th gen fighter so it shouldnt call itself 5th gen.
In the end we value our freedom..buying the hornet will seriously compromise our foreign policy Independence! The US track record of supporting undemocratic countries like Pak and china in the region against India is a serious concern for the future of democracy..
When 10 million hindus where ethnically cleansed in East Pakistan in 72, the US sent its 7th fleet in aid of Pakistan when India tried to stop them..!! The US sucks up to all the wrong ppl, we can never trust the US... enough said..
and from all of those I would choose Gripen. Swedish quality and his maneuverability is one of the highest in this list. It outstands F-18, F-16, MiG-35. Only rivals here are Eurofighter and Rafale. But both of them are very expensive however they have 2 engines compered to Gripen's one.
@zippyLTU I beg to differ: maneuverability-wise I don't see MiG-35 as inferior. As for reliability that has more to do with mainteinance then structural design or of avionics. MiGs have a long history of simple maintenance and reliability unless not maintained right. Also has higher combat survivability thanks to that second engine you mentioned. They can also be optioned with thrust vectoring, not available on Gripen. Gripen is awesome IMO but i like Mig better. But i'm Russian too lol peace
Well I agree with you about MiG's maintenance and simplicity. But if you take Gripen and MiG - 35, put them into close dogfight when using only machinguns (yeah it sounds radicilous now ;D) I would prefer to sit in Grippen. It is so nimble that makes MiG look like a cow on ice (thanks to system called canard-delta configuration) sorry for such expression. However, MiG outruns and outclimbs JAS - 39. Such palnes were made for different functions so it is qiute unwise to compare them :)
@zippyLTU See the Gripens aerodynamic configuration doesn't have lifting body. Mig does. And also has sharp LEXs which create vortexes above the wing thus increasing lift and thus increase the angle of attack that plane can take. I don't know how high an angle of attack Gripen can take but MiG is bound to have at least 32 degrees. So calling MiG-35 a cow on ice is at best naive. They are both multi-role.
Gripen is a great plane don't get me wrong. When it comes to flexibility in deployment, MiG and SAAB are great for using unprepared areas for bases. But I have a feeling that the long history of cooperation might weigh in a little in MiG favor. Although Israeli avionics and data-links might be more compatible with SAAB then MiG.
@zippyLTU But 2 engines doesn't have to make the plane better. 2 engines = more weight than 1, sure they get more thrust but they don't really need it. Maneuverability with a light weight plane > More thrust with hevier plane imo.
i believe india will never go for gripen or anyother european aircraft or russian. this is not because american planes are better than all other in mrca. its cuz of political reason that india will go for f18s or f16s. though eurofighter and gripen are the best choices, iaf will never opt them. thru mrca, india intends to show its inclination towards the usa. but f16 or f18 would be the worst choice. these aircrafts are already nearing their retirements and would be a big mistake for india.
So about this MRCA thing, India is buying some Saab 39 gripens and other aircraft ? or is this a competition between india and whoever is in the MRCA thing?
basically india needs about 120 fighter aircraft and wants the option of 60 more. the contenders are F16, F18, Mig35, Rafale, Eurofighter, and Gripen. The winner gets a $10 billion contract with Indian govt. Winner take all. Mig is from our old friend Russia. Eurofighter is technically brilliant. Rafale can be easily integrated. India originally was nterested in Gripen. The americans are the dark horse contenders. Personally, i like the eurofighter.
India wants to keep developing Tejas because they want something of their own.
Who doesn't ? But the problem with Tejas is that it will probably never be a trustworthy first line fighter. Even worse: India will always be dependant on other nations for upgrades over time so Tejas will never be a truly independent plane. Still - I wouldn't call Tejas a bad idea. If it's fully and sucessfully developed it will be the first new plane in that weight category since the 60´s.
Tejas is a little shitplane totaly wacked out in reality. Hope you indiana jones people are aware of that. Anyway if you live your life in total lie and rejection of reality its your own problem. Anyway : We dont give away our tech like its a gift for a 3-world country. We arent giving you anything for free. Its not and will not be free goodies for you. Sorry. Santa claus will not come to your land in this business for free.
Although some aircraft flown in these exercises may have had a slightly better thrust-to-weight ratio than our aircraft, Gripens still managed to get behind the F-16s to make use of both their IR-missiles and guns. The small visual signature and excellent agility of the Gripen proved to be a considerable advantage in a dogfight.
Yeah! Not even surpassed by thrust vector in moderate to higher speeds. No extra neccesary needed. The best aerodynamic (or very close) configuration there is. f-22 and f-35 are flying barndoors in comparison. Norway, Denmark and Netherlands will regret it when the eurocanards slice them in pieces and the stealth are obsolete.
I don't get it - why would Norway, the Netherlands and Denmark be sliced to pieces by their - allies?!
As for Tejas; regardless of its merits or lack of such as a fighter, it can be considered to be many things, but a "bad idea" for India, it is not. Quite the contrary. Should Tejas prove to be a mediocre fighter, I'm sure Indias next fighter will benefit from the experience and teach the competition a lesson or two.
Dont want to say india is doing the worst exept doing what they are supposed to DO : developing their own " wehikle HAHA. and dont talk about swedens speakings with holland denmark and norway: their american assess is filled deep down with usa dix. their inferior airplanes do NOTHING against swedish planes in every usa trainings. That you have to learn stupid american schoolboy. And your indian lane is perhaps good for an india but its worthless outside .
Do know about swedish tech? We won kargil war for you stupid indians. Why didnt the cowboys shot you during the times. your stupidity is the best ,Indias intelligens must be the smallest always trying to buy the worst weapons.
You have Russia and israel as a close friend and they dont want Gripen. Also the sweds arent so good at make the connections and give bribes neccessary to make a deal happen. Even thou our bofors cannon was the best without doubt in 5 years of trials in india they ignored it. You indians have to make an effort yourself if you want the best. And I dont think you bother about it.I think I understand the way you behave. Sorry!
Swedes also give bribes......The problem is that Swedish ppl. are very honest......
No Indian politician wants his name dragged in public or broadcast in Radio like it happed in Bofors gun case....That what the reason...no Indian politician wants to buy Bofors ruin his career.....
The F-35's stealth is touted as a big advantage, but Kemp says that "stealth alone is not the answer to survivability." The Gripen's speed and maneuverability, Kemp says, as well as "superior defensive technology," make it much tougher to shoot down than the F-35.
There is no reason a flying barndoor could loose, especially not against the eurocanards: They arent american! Its time you canard fanboys learn american logic. hehe
Its a very small chans they will buy this plane. THey want to have it for comparing costs and abilities. Perhaps also to relise they want on their own planes when bought from russia/israel. THeir own Tejas also is a little failed project with most systems and abilities not coming by far close to Jas Gripen. Then they say their own Tejas have the own abilities or will have soon even if they cant accomplish it so its competetive. Lies for their own population, like bofors..
dude i m with u the gripen is a gr8 jet it will be a big mistake if our people dont buy the gripen especially with the Tech transfer and all those goodies
Gripen NG enhanced missile warning system using ultraviolet sensors with 5-km. (3.1-mi.) detection range. A high-data-rate communications system a low-rate data terminal and an image-transmitting wideband link offering 250-Kbps. throughput. The system allows directed infrared countermeasures.
The change opened up space for extra fuel, thereby increasing range. This approach also avoided major outer mold-line alterations, which had been considered to achieve the range increase.
The Gripen, The Eurofighter and The F 22 are within the top three! Nobody can really tell until they actually get into a dogfight for real. But Gripen is the Spitfire of the 2000 century, just as superiour agility!
Cant people search for their own! Its just as easy as it gets, just search for Hungarian Gripens shoot down of a Eurofighter and you´ll get the full report!
Honest what are the odds of India choosing the Jas 39 Gripen?
39 Gripen is a good plane and have many advantages compare to its opponentsbut when India will bye a new fighter there is just not a choose of buying the best aircraft..
I would like to see these in IAF along with some Eurofighters ! Eurofighter has excellent maneuverability. We should probably wait to see LCA's induction and then the Army's verdict about it. LCA is amazing. I hope we see the MCA prototype as scheduled !
gripen made Brazil ....

You know, the greatest compliment I ever heard about the Swedes was, back some time ago, some American engineers were convinced that they had made the tiniest drill bit in the world. They sent it to the Swedes to brag. The Swedes drilled a hole in it and sent it back to them !
JetMechMA 7 months ago
@JetMechMA .Gripen had today a 100 miljon dollar study allowed to keep the systems current- but this dont make a new plane.
Millinillion 7 months ago
@Millinillion Gripen looks awesome to me. The only concern I would have is how do the canards affect the pilot's visibility. But overall I would think that the canard design is more agile than tail mounted pitch controls. Seems pretty forward thinking to me.

@JetMechMA I got that totally wrong. It was Swiss watch makers who drilled a hole in America's tiniest drill bit. Sorry. My compliments to the Swedes still stand.

rafaletiger 9 months ago
@rafaletiger Where did you get that info? No releases on such things have been made by either the IAF nor any of the Airplane manufacturers. Saab and the IAF have however said a few good and bad things about the planes. The IAF said they were really pleased with the results of the Gripen during the flight trials and that its AESA was probably one of the best ones in the M-MRCA. The IAF also made some comments about the Rafale saying it performed really well too.
wellerocks 9 months ago
@rafaletiger And I don't really know what you mean by "poor capabilities". The Gripen is an excellent multi-roll platform, with swing-roll capabilities aswell as having an international ease of use. It can use both European, indigenous and American weapons, it was created in the first place to be able to fight even with the loss of air-superiority against the Russians, and its avionics and communication is perhaps arguably some of the most sophisticated equipment in the world.
wellerocks 9 months ago
@rafaletiger From the rumors I've heard from Saab, the Gripen was cut from the shortlist of the M-MRCA due to two main reasons. And that is because the IAF thought their Gripen IN's wouldn't be able to get their AESA radars on time (since Sweden expressed that we'd want our AESA's before anyone else), aswell as being too similar to the Tejas (eventhough the Tejas is outdated, nowhere near as good and just meant for India to have its own 20-year delayed fighter).
wellerocks 9 months ago
@rafaletiger And the M-MRCA was at first a replacement for the light, single-engine MiG-21 fighters. But when the Tejas got delayed, a new similar fighter jet system was to be introduced. The Gripen NG is basically what the Indians hoped the Tejas could be. It's better in every single way, it's much more advanced and the perfect candidate to replace a single-engine fighter. I mean India already operates several very expensive dual-engine fighters (Su-30MKI, MiG-29K, PAK-FA) so why another one?
wellerocks 9 months ago
this is not the NG Demonstrator!
PilotHaudi 10 months ago

Even this, Gripen is a great fighter.

where is the stealth in this plane??? wtf useless...
SillieWous 1 year ago
@SillieWous Its not useless, it is a very small plane. and therefore stealthy to a certain grade. It makes up for the Stealth capability to fight without runways, using ordinary 1-1 lane roads, and only 5 men readying the plane in 15 minuttes. Low Logistics, Good survivability Vs. High logistics and supreme mission capability.
JVC7400 1 year ago
@JVC7400 I think it's more useful to have a completely stealthy plane than kind of being stealthy cause if I would be in a war I think i want to have maximum protection instead of being able to start a mission earlier
SillieWous 1 year ago
@SillieWous Of course, its not stealthy, but to a certain grade (not very much). of course in war scenario the F-35 will be good in the start, but when the airfields are bombed, it takes to much logistics, however it can take of vertically without full armament and fuel. here, the gripen can do with full fuel and full armament on a 1-1 lane road. For the money you give, the gripen is far by the best aircraft you can get. But the F-35 has a wider mission capability.
JVC7400 1 year ago
@JVC7400 but you shouldn't care about the costs but about peoples lifes

Ah yes,
Once again the Gripen was used as a scapegoat for spending insane money on something that has lots of prestige but will have total costs that are twice as high while delivering half the operational capacity :-D
Compare the 15 Austrian Typhoons with the 14 Czech Gripens. The Czechs fly more, can perform more, and for less money. Had the Austrians had the Rafale instead they would have been equally inferior as an Air Force compared to the Czechs ! Indians = silly people :-D

dat8r1 1 year ago
@dat8r1 We are not poor. We are much larger economy than yours. Much larger foreign reserves and larger purchasing power. As for now, it lies between Rafale and Eurofighter. But Indians are more tilted towards Rafale due to its quality and very good relationship between India and France are another factor for going for Rafale. RAFALE is an awesome Jet with all the capabilities and with AESA later on it will be the deadliest package.
chex29 1 year ago

zippyLTU 11 months ago 2
@zippyLTU Fighter jet deals are ~90% politics and ~10% of how good the airplane really is. I'd say the Eurofighter by far is the most troubled out of the European jets. It has the largest decrease in actual built planes compared to what the initial orders were, it has the highest price (almost in the league of the F-35) and is constantly facing problems regarding its capabilities. The Tranche 3 models of just recently got the air-ground capability due to the long delay of its targeting pod
wellerocks 9 months ago
@zippyLTU And BAE aswell as Lockheed Martin has a long history of bribing. BAE marketed the Gripen in Austria (when swedish reporters revealed Gripen-bribes) and BAE was leading the South African campaign (in which bribes probably have been revealed). Yet, Saab gets the blame for both of these and is hung out in media and in the world. The Rafale by far outshines the Eurofighters. The Gripen is smaller and cheaper however and is thus better for struggling economies or smaller nations.
wellerocks 9 months ago
@wellerocks Yap, today if you want to survive in military industry you have to bribe...
zippyLTU 9 months ago
@zippyLTU yes, and the media acts just as surprised everytime. The difference between Saab and all the others is that Saab is under constant watch from the Swedish media. TV4 has AGAIN tried to frame Saabs sale to South Africa. They just wont let it go. And they have arguments like "the wrong choice for South Africa" when Gripen truly is the only jet they'd be able to fly and operate considering that SAAF barely even affords to fly anything.

BadTim28 1 year ago
@BadTim28 Stealth do not even exist, it's just a much smaller radar picture, but multiple radars with different frequencies and some computing they are visible enough.
Also the American fetish to add spec's to everything make their things heavy, large and with much heat trails. And if they turn on their own radar they are no longer hidden.
ytbabbler 1 year ago
@BadTim28 im no fan of the F22 but in a dogfight the 22s vectored thrust would mean bye bye gripen. at longer ranges the 22 gets even more advantage due to its low radar signature, better radar and supercruise.

Gripen is stealthy enough.

The most suitable plane for MMRCA. Just put conformal fuel tanks to increase its range and put EJ200 instead of GE F414 engine.

F-35 pilot Helmet Mounted Display System could turn into night vision to see enemy aircraft at night.

actualy, compared to the f-22 it is rather economical with comparable performance. its not better than f22 but it comes close. it would be perfect for india
dethica 2 years ago
@foxinterspecial The performance of F-35 is not the key issue because stealth gives that plane a huge advantage. Real problem of F-35 is payload. It can carry only two air-to-air missiles in it's internal cargo hold and only these can be used if you want the plane to be invisble to radars.
iivaris 1 year ago
@foxinterspecial
poor performance? how can you even suggest that the VTOL power of a harrier, agility as an F-16 and low detection profile as an F-22, all in just one plane, can be beaten by this small plane? So sorry but I afraid that I disagree with you. The F-35 does worth every penny.
helmetless 1 year ago
@helmetless
VTOL only 1 model. It doesn't have the agility of f16 (and gripen has more agility that f 16), and it has nowere nere the stealth of f22. and being small isn't something bad. USAAIRPOWER 2 years ago
man i have seen your profile and you are against russia, yet you are supporting mig-35 why like that
77777771226 2 years ago
and from all of those I would choose Gripen. Swedish quality and his maneuverability is one of the highest in this list. It outstands F-18, F-16, MiG-35. Only rivals here are Eurofighter and Rafale. But both of them are very expensive however they have 2 engines compered to Gripen's one.
zippyLTU 2 years ago 25
@zippyLTU I beg to differ: maneuverability-wise I don't see MiG-35 as inferior. As for reliability that has more to do with mainteinance then structural design or of avionics. MiGs have a long history of simple maintenance and reliability unless not maintained right. Also has higher combat survivability thanks to that second engine you mentioned. They can also be optioned with thrust vectoring, not available on Gripen. Gripen is awesome IMO but i like Mig better. But i'm Russian too lol peace
Spetsnazovets 2 years ago
Well I agree with you about MiG's maintenance and simplicity. But if you take Gripen and MiG - 35, put them into close dogfight when using only machinguns (yeah it sounds radicilous now ;D) I would prefer to sit in Grippen. It is so nimble that makes MiG look like a cow on ice (thanks to system called canard-delta configuration) sorry for such expression. However, MiG outruns and outclimbs JAS - 39. Such palnes were made for different functions so it is qiute unwise to compare them :)
zippyLTU 2 years ago
@zippyLTU See the Gripens aerodynamic configuration doesn't have lifting body. Mig does. And also has sharp LEXs which create vortexes above the wing thus increasing lift and thus increase the angle of attack that plane can take. I don't know how high an angle of attack Gripen can take but MiG is bound to have at least 32 degrees. So calling MiG-35 a cow on ice is at best naive. They are both multi-role.
Spetsnazovets 2 years ago
Well I Grippens' main function is to intercept.
zippyLTU 2 years ago
Gripen is a great plane don't get me wrong. When it comes to flexibility in deployment, MiG and SAAB are great for using unprepared areas for bases. But I have a feeling that the long history of cooperation might weigh in a little in MiG favor. Although Israeli avionics and data-links might be more compatible with SAAB then MiG.
Spetsnazovets 2 years ago

Melchersson 2 years ago
Rapeattack 2 years ago

Why didnt the cowboys shot you during the times. your stupidity is the best ,Indias intelligens must be the smallest always trying to buy the worst weapons.

i m supporting the gripen IN for the MRCA cause the russians are always cheating us and the americans we cant trust GO GRIPENNNNNNN

Sorry!
Rapeattack 2 years ago 3
Swedes also give bribes......The problem is that Swedish ppl. are very honest......
No Indian politician wants his name dragged in public or broadcast in Radio like it happed in Bofors gun case....That what the reason...no Indian politician wants to buy Bofors ruin his career.....

The F-35's stealth is touted as a big advantage, but Kemp says that "stealth alone is not the answer to survivability." The Gripen's speed and maneuverability, Kemp says, as well as "superior defensive technology," make it much tougher to shoot down than the F-35.

Most fighter jets use technology developed in either US or Russiathats the fact
smorgasbord3 2 years ago

39 Gripen is a good plane and have many advantages compare to its opponentsbut when India will bye a new fighter there is just not a choose of buying the best aircraft..
A fighter from west or east?
Bribes...bribes and bribes... etc

First vacate Kashmir and enable Kashmiri pandits to return. Palestine doens't exist. It was a Jewish land even before Arabs were born.

I would like to see these in IAF along with some Eurofighters ! Eurofighter has excellent maneuverability. We should probably wait to see LCA's induction and then the Army's verdict about it. LCA is amazing. I hope we see the MCA prototype as scheduled !
