It's a similar thing, actually... bringing or "leading" someone into the "moment." He does a quick induction after establishing rapport, then through pacing and repetition, skillfully leads her into a calm trance state. She is most likely more relaxed than before, and possibly more "aware" on some level. Notice the way she just continues to gaze passively at him. If you study hypnosis you can recognise these techniques immediately.

No, not exactly a "fake." Lots of people use hypnosis techniques without even being really aware of the fact that they are doing it. Others do it more deliberately. I suppose it depends someone upon the intent. Incidentally, you can use self-hypnosis or meditation to "bring yourself" into the present moment as well:)
