single speed makes your bike more manageable and their is lots of reasons to go single speed, however, I do feel a single speed bike is a massive step backwards for the long commuter doing 20 miles plus a day...
@robhingston For long commutes single speed or fixed is a mechanical advantage because there are fewer components and fewer potential problems. The maintenance is next to nothing.
@fixedgearforlife Fixies have no mechanical advantage to road bikes.
The maintenance of a road bike is next to nothing. Just because you are not smart enough to know how to dial in gears and brakes, doesn't make it a problem. I spend an hour every 4 months redialing in my gears and brakes.
Having a selection of gears, Having 2 brakes, being able to coast VS one single gear (bad cadence), probably zero brakes, and not being able to coast. Which one sounds like it has the advantage?
I have a singlespeed roadie (drop bars, 2 brakes, freewheel) as a training bike. It's great. Hard up the hills and I need to spin it out fast to keep up with guys on geared bikes. My rpm has gone from 31 to 171 as the highest.

@welcome2my2ndlife
You can always go faster on a geared road bike than a fixed gear.
Gambo2810 6 months ago
@welcome2my2ndlife it depends on whether it has a chain or not.

How would you expect him to brake if he's Riding a single speed (freewheeled) without brakes... think about it

What are you talking about? Even the late "bike guru", Sheldon Brown recommended to have at least a brake for the front wheel on a fixed gear.
