single speed makes your bike more manageable and their is lots of reasons to go single speed, however, I do feel a single speed bike is a massive step backwards for the long commuter doing 20 miles plus a day...

The maintenance of a road bike is next to nothing. Just because you are not smart enough to know how to dial in gears and brakes, doesn't make it a problem. I spend an hour every 4 months redialing in my gears and brakes.

Having a selection of gears, Having 2 brakes, being able to coast VS one single gear (bad cadence), probably zero brakes, and not being able to coast. Which one sounds like it has the advantage?

I have a singlespeed roadie (drop bars, 2 brakes, freewheel) as a training bike. It's great. Hard up the hills and I need to spin it out fast to keep up with guys on geared bikes. My rpm has gone from 31 to 171 as the highest.

What are you talking about? Even the late "bike guru", Sheldon Brown recommended to have at least a brake for the front wheel on a fixed gear.
