@GreatBigSlide Well said, I'm sick of all the know it alls, If you weren't friends with the band members and lived thru it, you don't really know anything but a few facts that you've read. And don't believe everything you read either.
Relf and Plant represent two very different eras and styles. Relf embodied everything that was cool about the 60's and Plant embodied everything that was cool about the 70's. Yes Plant "rocked" more when he sang this song, but Relf wasn't interested in simply "rocking out" anymore he wanted to expand his mind creatively and spiritually and chose to take risks artistically. I 'm not knocking Zeppelin but I do believe from an artistic standpoint they were a step down from the Yardbirds.
haha I'm sure Relf was cool THEN but a good comparison would be Eric Burdon who was(and still is) WAY cooler, not to mention a better singer. If anyone truly embodied what was cool about the 60's it was Eric. He has the coolest voice I've ever heard from any era, totally timeless. Relf looks, acts and sings like a total weirdo. You can debate which band was more artistic until your blue in the face but I know for a fact there were alot cooler ppl in the 60s than Relf lol he had no charisma.

Look - this is my favorite band, but I'm not enough of an asshole to say he's a good singer. He sucks. Hands down. Just listen to him wail after the guitar solo...that alone should be enough to determine that he sucks.
I don't like Zeppelin at all...but, please...they're a much better band than The Yardbirds.
Superfans of this band will tell you that they're better than Zeppelin...but they truly fucking suck except for the guitar work.
Heh? That's confusing. I wouldn't say that he was good at the psychedelic shit (Yeah, I was surprised with that wail.). He was a good pop singer ("For Your Love"). I'll give him that. Sure, I wouldn't say he was great (especially not here) but he was a good singer to some degree.

Dude - of course The Ramones suck. Listen to them.

Johnny Rotten is a great punk singer, but he's not a "good singer"...same with Joey Ramone too.
I always hated Keith's voice...and yeah, on some Yardbirds documentary I watched, Beck said that he thought Relf wasn't a bad singer, especially to market, but a great singer for the "psycho blues".
@asmorgan88 I guess I can understand that. I'm still not sure if Glenn Danzig could always sing or not. I think Jeffrey Hyman could at least sing . . . but they just wanted to rock out. Now that I think about it, I wouldn't say Johnny Rotten ever sang in the first place. Does Punk suck? I guess GG did wanna suck. Whatever.
Anyway, Keith never sounded too bad to me but I definitely never thought he was on top of his game. Nice thing of Beck to say. You think it too nice, huh?
Dude, who is Jeffrey Hyman?! Joey Ramone is the Ramones' lead singer...not Jeffrey Hyman. When Joey Ramone died, nobody said : "Rock & Roll will sure miss Jeff Hyman". His name is Joey Ramone.
Yes, punk sucks. That doesn't mean it's not good though...there are plenty of good punk rock bands. They just all suck.
Relf has his moments...sometimes he sounds alright, but man, he can be pretty terrible.
@asmorgan88 I thought you would have gotten the clue that Jeffry Hyman was Joey Ramone's real name. As in all of the "Ramones" used that as their pseudonym. Dee Dee thought of it when he heard of a man using the pseudonym Paul Ramon (I think you might know who that was).
Also, I thought sucking was contrary to being good or I've missed the double entendre here.
Yeah - Paul McCartney used to use the name "Paul Ramon(e)" when doing stuff like checking into hotels, booking flights, renting cars, etc. ...The Ramones all loved The Beatles, & they're probably the biggest ripoff of the band ever.
Well, yeah - you're right...but, I mean it in the sense that The Ramones weren't musically inclined. They sucked. Punk sucks. I don't mean it's not good though.
@asmorgan88 Oh, you mean in terms of musicianship. A'ight. I wouldn't say they directly ripped off the Beatles. Their sound was more Beach Boys like. I would still say that Johnny knew how to play the electric guitar quite well.
Also, Johnny's real name is John Cummings and Dee Dee's real name is Douglas Colvin.
I mean it in the sense that all The Ramones' songs are two and a half minutes long, follow a similar structure, & are about love, girls, friends, and drugs. Just like The Beatles.
The Ramones wanted to be The Beatles. It's clear in their music, & they've claimed so too. They may not "sound" like The Beatles, but it was surely their intent to "be like" The Beatles.
Johnny didn't know how to play the guitar - that's why he never progressed or played anything but power chords
@asmorgan88 Beatle's songs sounded like they were made because of drugs but I still I see your point. People judge the songs though so I guess the musicians sucking is a whole other thing. Like Pantera: great musicians but not always a good band.
Some people want to say that Jimmy Page left the Yardbirds because he considered the other musicians in the band inferior, but I think the musicianship on this clip with Jim McCarty and Chris Dreja is excellent. I'm not sure I like Keith Relf's vocals on this, but I reject the notion that somehow the Yardbirds were inferior musicians.
Dig this absolutely and I agree with rialcnis, the great Yardbirds were Much Much More than a garage band, you are better off obtaining more information about them so you know what you are talking about. Page is good but it was a different time.
Comparing the lyrics between the Yardbirds version and the Zep version is interesting. Keith sings of confusion, anguish and love, seeking to know the answer. Humble, repentent, abused . "give me a clue as to where I am at." The secret isn't fun.
Zep's sends woman to helfire and professes secret satanic knowledge. Even the confusedness is denied. "for so long it's not true" and ultimately the Devil within them sends the Woman the "Bill" so they cackle cackle in vengeful glee.....
That's the real story folks... there's not comparisons between those fantastic guitar players... But as an old musician I must say... as Mr. Hendrix (The Greatest)ONLY Jimmy Page plays his songs alive as good as the studio versions or even better nowadays... and please don't forget, Jimmy Page is also Master in Classical Music... a lot of people don't even know that... check it out on "Death Wish 2" album... all compositions are made and signed by Mr. Page!!!
Your "history" of The Yardbirds is fucking back-asswards...if not flat out entirely false!
It's also very well documented, that Page in the studio & Page live, are very very different from each other. To say that "live" Page & "studio" Page are in & of the same, is just not true. His live playing is often very "sloppy"...not at all like the albums...
Hendrix is also a bad guitarist, and if you're a musician, that should be clear to you.
The same Plant who also brought his friend John Bonham right after Page's seen the "Band Of Joy" presentation...
Beck despite being a great guitar player, didn't have a very good temper, you can easily see that in Antonioni's movie called "Blow up"... there you can see both of them acting...
Page was not in the band for a little bit as many people think... when Clapton left he first called Page for the job, but Page himself indicated Beck and the band went on...
The Yardbirds never broke up... they've stopped 'cause of Terry Reid's death... and only because of that... otherwise The New Yardbirds (Led Zeppelin) would have Terry Reid as a vocalist instead of Plant...
They were never called The New Yardbirds...I don't care what you've read, what you've heard, or who has told you what...but the group was NEVER billed as The New Yardbirds.
My goodness... the Yardbirds met their real commercial peak with Jeff Beck AND Jimmy Page with the hits Four Your Love; Good morning Little Schoolgirl; Shapes of Things and many others.. Page also played bass at the very beginning but his guitar skills were much more than expected so Beck left the band to start his solo career...
Jeff Beck nor Jimmy Page play on "For Your Love"...same with "Good Morning Little Schoolgirl"...that was Clapton on guitar.
Page didn't play bass at the very beginning either, he played for a very short time after Paul Samwell-Smith left the group sometime in 1966...
Beck didn't leave the group because Page was better than him. He left because he didn't like the power struggle, he wanted all eyes on him as guitarist.
Asshole, Eric Clapton was the guitarist on "For Your Love" & "Good Morning Little Schoolgirl"...and Jimmy Page was NOT the guitarist on "Shapes of Things".
You are truly an idiot if you think that The Yardbirds was an apex of creativity for an of the musicians involved. They all went on to better things..and the best was Page with Led Zeppelin. The Yardbirds was a garage band with a revolving lead guitarist. That is their only claim to fame.
Chris Dreja, Keith Relf, & Jim McCarty went on to do nothing. Together & Renaissance did absolutely nothing...so I don't know why you're saying they went on to do better things...I mean, if Medieval type music is your bag, then yeah, you'd dig it...
No need to say that Led Zeppelin is better than The Yardbirds...they clearly are the "better" band.
If you think The Yardbirds' only mark on rock & roll is their guitarists...you're naive...if not just flat out ignorant.
Armageddon the group with Keith made one fantastic album.
Renaissance first album was amazing.
The yardbirds were a5t their very best live mid 1966 till Bedck left, then in 67 Page was just not as dynamic, but in 89 he had devloped the riffs and by the end of the Yardbirds they reached another apex.
The Yardbirds were touring constantly. Studio time was rare . They never had the luck Zep had. Seeing Zep when they first came to the US and played at whisky was like a weak Yardbirds.
During 1967 I saw them 3 times and Page was still just a poor man's Beck... but the next year the arrangments became more devleoped and Page took the guitar in new directions.
I like Page's guitar work a lot more than Beck's. It's not to say that Page was/is better than Beck...I just like it more. A song like "Think About It" hits me harder than a song like "Heart Full of Soul", or "Lost Woman".
The Clash were overall a better band than The Sex Pistols...but that doesn't mean they are "better". To me, The Sex Pistols beat the hell out of The Clash.
It's all opinion based, my friend. Think what you want.
When I talk about the Yardbirds vs. Zep etc, I am talking about the live performances, my own perception. After Beck left, it took a year for Page to get solid as a replacement. The live shows just weren't as good. and I am talking about 3 shows I saw spaced over 1967. Pages developed those riffs into his own masterpieces in 1968.
I can't agree with you that Armageddon & Renaissance are good. I mean, if you're into it, that's cool...I'm not at all though...so to me, those bands couldn't make an "amazing" album.
You've drilled it into my head that you think Beck is the best. That's fine that you think that. I, on the other hand, do not.
It's no secret that he (Page) built his repertoire off of what Beck was doing/had done...I just like the Page era Yardbirds' material a hell of a lot more.
I can't imagine why you don't like the Armageddon album---that wasn't the classical style you said you donl;t care for---it was insanely hard rock. it's Keith continuing on his cosmic quest and his harmonica was mindboggling.. We are talking about the same album?
I don't really listen to Zeppelin too much...at all. The Yardbirds are my favorite band, but I wouldn't have the nerve to say that they are/were a better band than Zeppelin.
I like The Ramones more than The Beatles. But I wouldn't dare say that The Ramones were the better band.
I like Motorhead more than I like Iron Maiden, but I wouldn't say Motorhead is the better band.
Led Zeppelin is clearly the "better" band. I like The Yardbirds more though.
I guess that bottom line for me is ---and I saw alot of shows of lots of bands---the two best shows I ever saw was the Yardbirds at Catalina and the Yardbirds at the Shrine. then some time later the Zep were really at their best at Rose Palace in Pasadena.--after that for me Zep got boring. and the effects of Page's darker influences took over. After the 4th album, they lost the Rave-up!! That ws it for me :) Armegeddon and Renaissance were incredible.
I have the original version of this for sale on Ebay, by Jake Holmes... Page gets and X in my book for taking credit for this song, which he clearly did not write. With that Karma, he's the one that should have been electrocuted in the tub with his guitar!
I heard that he felt so guilty he started doing heroin! heheh
I love this version-it's a different take on what would become a Zeppelin standard. I am of course biased-I love Keith Relf-to me he is a legend just as much as Jimmy is.
@asmorgan88 That's bullshit. Hendrix is a great guitarist. But Page is great too. Hendrix just never was a member of a great band. Page was awesome too but we wouldn't be talking about him if it wasn't for Zeppelin.
I don't listen to fucking Led Zeppelin, & I know only a handful of their songs that are played on the radio. I could care less about that band, because I've never at a point in my life listened to them...
I know who Jimmy Page is through The Yardbirds (the band you're commenting on!), and his work as a session musician. Not Led fucking Zeppelin.
First off, without Page. The Yardbirds fucking suck. The only reason anyone likes them is for Page. The only reason they are even remembered is for their lead guitarists of Clapton, Beck, and Page. For someone who barely knows Zeppelin you sure do have a limited knowledge of rock music in general, dickhead. And thats not an assumption.
The only Yardbirds album with Page on it was a flop, & had no commercial impact at the time of its' release, & contained no "hits".
The Yardbirds met their commercial peak with Jeff Beck as their guitarist, not Jimmy Page...they broke up after Page became their guitarist...their last chart hitting single was with Beck...guitarists cite Beck as more of an influence than Page...
How could you say that they were only popular/known because of Page?! He was only in the band for a little bit!
Little Games single made the Charts in LA at number 14 I think for a week. The album was a disappointment but still has some great stuff on it. Yardbirds had back luck with managment. There three hits Shapes, Over Under and Happenings were on the radio every ten minutes there for a while. They changed music. Few realize that they really started the psychedelic hard rock guitar thing. Hendrix a the time was like a Motown Yardbirds rip off at first and Cream took the sound too.
You have no idea what you are talking about. Calling the Yardbirds a garage band is absurd. What they played beginning in 1964 they began the whole genre-breaking blues rock instrumental sound. then invented psychedelic guitar sound, the Eastern sound, cosmic lyrics, gregorian chants in rock, the "raveup" long complex instrumentals, controlled feedback.
Ya had to be seeing all the bands in those years to really understand how it evolved. Yardbirds were psychedelic heavy metal of 1965.
I like Hendrix on album, but, I saw him a bunch of times and it was bad luck, because he was always terrible and too out of it to play. His strings were so slack they wiggled on the fretboard. He was too stoned to play and it was all noise.
But srsly Axis Bold as Love was a masterpiece and Red House.well that was magic. I had read once him admitting that Beck was #1
Yeah when he's doing thats spaced out hippie shit. But when he's doing the blues stuff like you hear on his stuff that was released after his death you'd understand his genius. He's a fine blues player.
I may not have heard the blkues stuff you are talking about. Are you tlaking about Jimi Hendrix Experience stuff? He had been in a bad before he went off on his own...an he had not yet developed the loud tone. He got that from seeing Beck. No one else was doing it yet.
Pay better attention. i wasn't talking to you. And lighten up. Of course all is just people's opinion. You aren't being drawn and quartered until you agree.
id rock it about every chance i got wander why he didnt rock it in his zep days this looks way better than the stuff he wore in the later zeppelin dayz
also cant help but wander what it would be like if they sticked together epsecially seeing how they started letting jimmy do more work he was definatley revolutionizing their sound this being a prime example
I'm not saying it's bad ..For it's time this was kickass but Zeppelin is so much more TIMELESS considering a year later in 1969 Zeppelin looked like a band I could see nowadays(ripped jeans and t shirts) but Yardbirds are too Psychedlic for my liking and the look is so much more mid-60's. Zeppelin became the iconic band that most bands from the 70's up to now model themselves after. Pages classic riffs and Bonham! Everything from the look, attitude, and of course the music made Zeppelin timeless
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
yea I'm not going to bother comparing lyrics but I'm pretty sure Stairway speaks for itself..by the way I could care less about that Crowley bullshit, I'm all about the music. There is a reason this video only has 9 comments and Zeppelin is the most bootlegged band of all time..lol look at that idiot at 3:40 during Jimmy's solo " ooh AH.. ooh AH.." Plant had charisma this guy looks like a geek..PSYCHEDLIA IS DEAD. " Let the music be your master, will you heed the master's call? "..
... Well, my original upload of this clip had 199 comments... so it can' t be that bad!... And yes, some people favored the Yards over the Zep!... not that I'm biased, personally speaking!... ;-D
I am glad to see this here, and whilst Mr. Page and I are in the same Fraternity, bias or no, I do prefer this one better, has to do with a bit more class perhaps?
HAHA the yardbirds are so funny..they look so out dated with the pschedlic look and lyrics like feel like a mouse but you act like a cat lol. It's weird to think that only a year later Zeppelin seems so much more modern and timeless with both the sound and especially the look. Jimmy looks so much cooler in the early zeppelin days wearing just velvet pants and a leather jacket or just a t shirt and jeans. It's so easy to see why they say Zeppelin bacame the blueprint for every band that followed
It's interesting seeing Jimmy taking the centre of the stage, where usually the singer was placed, even though he's a new member of the group at that time

Johnny didn't know how to play the guitar - that's why he never progressed or played anything but power chords
asmorgan88 1 year ago
@asmorgan88 Beatle's songs sounded like they were made because of drugs but I still I see your point. People judge the songs though so I guess the musicians sucking is a whole other thing. Like Pantera: great musicians but not always a good band.
NeverAloneForever 1 year ago
Some people want to say that Jimmy Page left the Yardbirds because he considered the other musicians in the band inferior, but I think the musicianship on this clip with Jim McCarty and Chris Dreja is excellent. I'm not sure I like Keith Relf's vocals on this, but I reject the notion that somehow the Yardbirds were inferior musicians.
futuremath08 1 year ago
@futuremath08
Come on, asshole.
They clearly are.
No problem...it doesn't make them a bad band because they're not virtuosos, but they're certainly not in the "elite" class of musicians.
asmorgan88 1 year ago
Dig this absolutely and I agree with rialcnis, the great Yardbirds were Much Much More than a garage band, you are better off obtaining more information about them so you know what you are talking about. Page is good but it was a different time.

Comparing the lyrics between the Yardbirds version and the Zep version is interesting. Keith sings of confusion, anguish and love, seeking to know the answer. Humble, repentent, abused . "give me a clue as to where I am at." The secret isn't fun.
Zep's sends woman to helfire and professes secret satanic knowledge. Even the confusedness is denied. "for so long it's not true" and ultimately the Devil within them sends the Woman the "Bill" so they cackle cackle in vengeful glee.....
rialcnis 2 years ago
That's the real story folks... there's not comparisons between those fantastic guitar players... But as an old musician I must say... as Mr. Hendrix (The Greatest)ONLY Jimmy Page plays his songs alive as good as the studio versions or even better nowadays... and please don't forget, Jimmy Page is also Master in Classical Music... a lot of people don't even know that... check it out on "Death Wish 2" album... all compositions are made and signed by Mr. Page!!!
marr2002 2 years ago
You're a complete idiot, my friend.
Hendrix is also a bad guitarist, and if you're a musician, that should be clear to you.
asmorgan88 2 years ago
@asmorganISAFAGGOT, hendrix is a 'bad guitarist'? hahahahaahhahahahahahah
you are delusional.

Dude, it's really homoerotic that you're talking about how "gay I am", and sending me personal messages.
asmorgan88 2 years ago
The same Plant who also brought his friend John Bonham right after Page's seen the "Band Of Joy" presentation...
Beck despite being a great guitar player, didn't have a very good temper, you can easily see that in Antonioni's movie called "Blow up"... there you can see both of them acting...
Page was not in the band for a little bit as many people think... when Clapton left he first called Page for the job, but Page himself indicated Beck and the band went on...
marr2002 2 years ago
Page WAS only in the band for a little bit.
About 18 months...and the band did the least amount of work when Page was in the band too.
m0dsar3us 2 years ago
Cont.
The Yardbirds never broke up... they've stopped 'cause of Terry Reid's death... and only because of that... otherwise The New Yardbirds (Led Zeppelin) would have Terry Reid as a vocalist instead of Plant...
marr2002 2 years ago
They were never called The New Yardbirds...I don't care what you've read, what you've heard, or who has told you what...but the group was NEVER billed as The New Yardbirds.
m0dsar3us 2 years ago
My goodness... the Yardbirds met their real commercial peak with Jeff Beck AND Jimmy Page with the hits Four Your Love; Good morning Little Schoolgirl; Shapes of Things and many others.. Page also played bass at the very beginning but his guitar skills were much more than expected so Beck left the band to start his solo career...
marr2002 2 years ago
Jeff Beck nor Jimmy Page play on "For Your Love"...same with "Good Morning Little Schoolgirl"...that was Clapton on guitar.
Page didn't play bass at the very beginning either, he played for a very short time after Paul Samwell-Smith left the group sometime in 1966...
Beck didn't leave the group because Page was better than him. He left because he didn't like the power struggle, he wanted all eyes on him as guitarist.
m0dsar3us 2 years ago 4
Asshole, Eric Clapton was the guitarist on "For Your Love" & "Good Morning Little Schoolgirl"...and Jimmy Page was NOT the guitarist on "Shapes of Things".
Where do people come up with some of this stuff?!
asmorgan88 2 years ago
You are truly an idiot if you think that The Yardbirds was an apex of creativity for an of the musicians involved. They all went on to better things..and the best was Page with Led Zeppelin. The Yardbirds was a garage band with a revolving lead guitarist. That is their only claim to fame.
DELACRUX15 2 years ago
@DELACRUX15
If you think The Yardbirds' only mark on rock & roll is their guitarists...you're naive...if not just flat out ignorant.
asmorgan88 2 years ago 2
@asmorganISADUMBNAZI, coming from someone who has LADY GAGA favorited!!!
chinaownsusa 2 years ago
Armageddon the group with Keith made one fantastic album.
Renaissance first album was amazing.
The yardbirds were a5t their very best live mid 1966 till Bedck left, then in 67 Page was just not as dynamic, but in 89 he had devloped the riffs and by the end of the Yardbirds they reached another apex.
The Yardbirds were touring constantly. Studio time was rare . They never had the luck Zep had. Seeing Zep when they first came to the US and played at whisky was like a weak Yardbirds.
rialcnis 2 years ago
I made lots of typos. sry.
The yardbirds were at their best mid 66 till Beck left. ,,,,by mid '68 page had really develop the riffs and had his own styles going.
rialcnis 2 years ago
During 1967 I saw them 3 times and Page was still just a poor man's Beck... but the next year the arrangments became more devleoped and Page took the guitar in new directions.
rialcnis 2 years ago
@rialcnis
It's all opinion based, my friend.
Think what you want.
asmorgan88 2 years ago
When I talk about the Yardbirds vs. Zep etc, I am talking about the live performances, my own perception. After Beck left, it took a year for Page to get solid as a replacement. The live shows just weren't as good. and I am talking about 3 shows I saw spaced over 1967. Pages developed those riffs into his own masterpieces in 1968.
rialcnis 2 years ago
But when i first saw zep at Whisky in beginning, they were more like a cover band of the Yardbirds, missing something big time.
Zeps first album is probably the best single rock album of all time--but seriously that should have been the Yardbirds last album.
rialcnis 2 years ago
@rialcnis
It's no secret that he (Page) built his repertoire off of what Beck was doing/had done...I just like the Page era Yardbirds' material a hell of a lot more.
asmorgan88 2 years ago
I can't imagine why you don't like the Armageddon album---that wasn't the classical style you said you donl;t care for---it was insanely hard rock. it's Keith continuing on his cosmic quest and his harmonica was mindboggling.. We are talking about the same album?
rialcnis 2 years ago
Yeah, I can't say that I like it. I don't.
asmorgan88 2 years ago
@rialcnis
Again, it's all opinion based.
I like The Yardbirds more though.
asmorgan88 2 years ago
I guess that bottom line for me is ---and I saw alot of shows of lots of bands---the two best shows I ever saw was the Yardbirds at Catalina and the Yardbirds at the Shrine. then some time later the Zep were really at their best at Rose Palace in Pasadena.--after that for me Zep got boring. and the effects of Page's darker influences took over. After the 4th album, they lost the Rave-up!! That ws it for me :) Armegeddon and Renaissance were incredible.
rialcnis 2 years ago
I have the original version of this for sale on Ebay, by Jake Holmes... Page gets and X in my book for taking credit for this song, which he clearly did not write. With that Karma, he's the one that should have been electrocuted in the tub with his guitar!
I heard that he felt so guilty he started doing heroin! heheh

asmorgan88 2 years ago
@asmorgan88 That's bullshit. Hendrix is a great guitarist. But Page is great too. Hendrix just never was a member of a great band. Page was awesome too but we wouldn't be talking about him if it wasn't for Zeppelin.
DELACRUX15 2 years ago
Did anyone ever to teach you to "not assume"?
I don't listen to fucking Led Zeppelin, & I know only a handful of their songs that are played on the radio. I could care less about that band, because I've never at a point in my life listened to them...
I know who Jimmy Page is through The Yardbirds (the band you're commenting on!), and his work as a session musician. Not Led fucking Zeppelin.
asmorgan88 2 years ago 3
First off, without Page. The Yardbirds fucking suck. The only reason anyone likes them is for Page. The only reason they are even remembered is for their lead guitarists of Clapton, Beck, and Page. For someone who barely knows Zeppelin you sure do have a limited knowledge of rock music in general, dickhead. And thats not an assumption.
DELACRUX15 2 years ago
The only Yardbirds album with Page on it was a flop, & had no commercial impact at the time of its' release, & contained no "hits".
The Yardbirds met their commercial peak with Jeff Beck as their guitarist, not Jimmy Page...they broke up after Page became their guitarist...their last chart hitting single was with Beck...guitarists cite Beck as more of an influence than Page...
How could you say that they were only popular/known because of Page?! He was only in the band for a little bit!
asmorgan88 2 years ago 2
Little Games single made the Charts in LA at number 14 I think for a week. The album was a disappointment but still has some great stuff on it. Yardbirds had back luck with managment. There three hits Shapes, Over Under and Happenings were on the radio every ten minutes there for a while. They changed music. Few realize that they really started the psychedelic hard rock guitar thing. Hendrix a the time was like a Motown Yardbirds rip off at first and Cream took the sound too.
rialcnis 2 years ago
You have no idea what you are talking about. Calling the Yardbirds a garage band is absurd. What they played beginning in 1964 they began the whole genre-breaking blues rock instrumental sound. then invented psychedelic guitar sound, the Eastern sound, cosmic lyrics, gregorian chants in rock, the "raveup" long complex instrumentals, controlled feedback.
Ya had to be seeing all the bands in those years to really understand how it evolved. Yardbirds were psychedelic heavy metal of 1965.
rialcnis 2 years ago
I don't think I've ever talked to anyone who loves their own opinion as much as you do.
asmorgan88 2 years ago
If you think Hendrix is a good guitarist, you obviously haven't seen him butcher "Wild Thing' at the Monterrey Pop Festival in '67.
THAT IS BY FAR THE WORST MUSICAL PERFORMANCE THAT I HAVE EVER HEARD, BY ANYONE. it's on YouTube...see for yourself!
Hendrix is good at making noise, and getting cool sounding effects. Not at making music.
asmorgan88 2 years ago
No, shit. Fucking hippies made him do that shit.
DELACRUX15 2 years ago
I like Hendrix on album, but, I saw him a bunch of times and it was bad luck, because he was always terrible and too out of it to play. His strings were so slack they wiggled on the fretboard. He was too stoned to play and it was all noise.
But srsly Axis Bold as Love was a masterpiece and Red House.well that was magic. I had read once him admitting that Beck was #1
:)

Yeah when he's doing thats spaced out hippie shit. But when he's doing the blues stuff like you hear on his stuff that was released after his death you'd understand his genius. He's a fine blues player.
DELACRUX15 2 years ago
I may not have heard the blkues stuff you are talking about. Are you tlaking about Jimi Hendrix Experience stuff? He had been in a bad before he went off on his own...an he had not yet developed the loud tone. He got that from seeing Beck. No one else was doing it yet.
rialcnis 2 years ago
my typing is getting more pseudo dyslexic.
rialcnis 2 years ago
You're obnoxious.
I'm not talking about Hendrix...?
And, I agree, and KNOW, that Beck was the "first" on many fronts.
No need to re-word yourself...especially to someone who understands!
I understand that you like Beck's stuff more. That's very respectable...I can see how you would.
But, I like the Page era stuff more. A lot more.
I don't care who did what first. I like what Page was doing more than what Beck had done in the band.
asmorgan88 2 years ago

wish i had an outfit like jimmy was rockin
id rock it about every chance i got wander why he didnt rock it in his zep days this looks way better than the stuff he wore in the later zeppelin dayz
also cant help but wander what it would be like if they sticked together epsecially seeing how they started letting jimmy do more work he was definatley revolutionizing their sound this being a prime example
joelaka3pac123 2 years ago
I'm not saying it's bad ..For it's time this was kickass but Zeppelin is so much more TIMELESS considering a year later in 1969 Zeppelin looked like a band I could see nowadays(ripped jeans and t shirts) but Yardbirds are too Psychedlic for my liking and the look is so much more mid-60's. Zeppelin became the iconic band that most bands from the 70's up to now model themselves after. Pages classic riffs and Bonham! Everything from the look, attitude, and of course the music made Zeppelin timeless

yea I'm not going to bother comparing lyrics but I'm pretty sure Stairway speaks for itself..by the way I could care less about that Crowley bullshit, I'm all about the music. "..
