@wrath111377 ok I am trying to like Dxtory because when it comes to editing I do like the separate audio files. But 2 things. when I record, the game volume goes away, and the "file fps" it gets like 27-30, while my game is getting 30+ and perfectly fine.

@GaMeOvErRules there is no reason the game audio should go away, and I wouldn't know why it is, and as for the fluctuation, 3 frames isn't that big of a deal. what resolution are you recording in, and are you using a legitimate copy of the program?

@wrath111377 actually I do have another question. What do you think is better. two hard drives. hd1 has the os on it, and hd2 has nothing. Do you think it would better to

1) have hd1 have the games installed and everything. and record to hd2.

2) have hd2 have the games installed and record to hd1.

Because I was just thinking I will prob more play games than playing and recording. So will that help if the os is going off 1 hd and then the games are loading from another, or not really matter.

This is issue is pissin me off. I just downloaded starting using but i can't stop recording. When i press the key to stop some numbers disappear but i still have orange text on the screen which means recording. Still a red square around the screen but i press the hot key and nothing happens after the first time. I minimize the game go to the folder, click on the avi. file and say file in still in use. I CAN'T STOP RECORDING!! The start record button doesn't stop it.

Anyone else have it where you record it runs perfect but when you watch it, it looks like 10 FPS? Also does is it always so much for only a minute long video? I recorded for 1:29 and it was almost 2 and a half gigs...

@AxTROUSRxMISSLE file sizes are huge, i found that out too, and this cann be the reason for which its replaying at 10 fps, cos it is having difficulty loading the file, but do not worry, the fps should be what you recorded it at

I have a question: You said on the beginning of the video, that it's a better idea to have 2 HDDs and to save the videos on the HDD where your OS isn't installed at (I've heard that in many videos, so I assume it's true). I don't have 2 physical HDDs so my question is: Will it make a difference if I create 2 partitions on my HDD and save my videos to the partition where the OS isn't installed at? - HM7

No. It has to be a different PHYSICAL drive. You could, and many things play into when you record to your OS drive, but you wouldn't like the framerate, so just save yourself the trouble and record to your other drive.

@davidjjdj record to a main drive, 10MBs is way to slow, my HDD benchmarks at 80-100MBs and thats the same disc the games being run from and records fine @ 30fps with a resolution of 1280x720 :)

@Ennec93 of course. you put it in an editing program, edit it and add commentary if need be and render it in a format suitable to youtube. if you tried to upload the raw file to youtube, i doubt the multiple audio streams would survive, and it would possibly be rejected due to file size.

I recommend PlayClaw. It records off the GPU not the CPU so there's not a noticeable performance drop. You get better performance from it than Fraps, that's for sure.

Had dxtory but it would always have choppy video and laggy audio and I changed every option possilbe for a week straight... Had to settle for fraps and its 20 fps drop. Have a HD 6850 with a 6 core 1090T.

You can run fraps off 1 core, if you change the settings in task manager. I changed mine and everything runs alot smoother. File sizes are even smaller.

My own experience with FRAPS is pretty good with a solid 30 (eh) FPS across the board. I'll try out dxtory once I get a nice rig someday.

Personally, I use Camtasia, and I record my audio on another laptop using Audacity, then I mix both game and voice in Camtasia. It works alright.

I remember this being suggested to you not too long ago in a live stream. I've been holding out on getting it until you did the review you promised a bit ago. It seems like a much better utility than Fraps for only a few more dollars, which I like. The hard part for me will be getting Vegas (and learning how to use it). You recommended using a second drive Wrath, does it matter what kind? For example, a WD MyBook external drive? It seems the more drives you have, the better the write speed true?

For free video only recording you can use MSI Afterburner.

I tried Dxtory early on and had some issues so I bought Fraps. I am surprised Fraps hasn't adopted some of the features in Dxtory...even MSI Afterburner has more options for video recording. Recording separate audio tracks seems nice, as well as more compression options.

I just recently obtained Fraps and was so excited but quickly lost the love for it because, as you said, it created huge files (I'd reach the 4Gig mark at about 1:30 of recording) and since the files were so big, it'd freeze my Vegas and also cause Vegas to render the video that was recorded with Fraps to flash black frames.

I haven't been able to find any other screen recorder until now! I'll go check out Dxtory later :)

Recording to half-res takes twice as long to render because vegas(or whatever) then has to re-stretch every single frame back to 1080p. or 720
