They Don't really have a choice: Two of the many reasons for large families applies here : #1 High Fatality Rate for kids and lack of medical facilities #2 Lack of proper education facilites so more kids mean more hands to work menial jobs and aid in the family income from an early age #3 that guy isn't educated either so he only knows one way of life: Lower class jobs. A continous cycle of life in third world countries!
Great report - lots of issues brought up, particularly the wealth divide between trash collectors and those who recycle and the high turnover of 'white made' equipment.
This isn't particularly new, America once had a nice secondhand market going until the last decade or so, when trade with China really took off. Still good to see someone doing it in the world
holy crap 5 kids??? no wonder Africa is so poor. A nation with so few resources is not meant to support a large population. More people born = less resources for everyone.
Africa has countries that are rich in resources. HEll China is exploiting that shit right now. The reason for Africa's conditions in many countries has more to do with the fact of political instability in the area. Japan has almost no resources of its own and yet it is a developed nation. There is a reason why.
Look at Zimbabwe. IT was a rich country and then mugabee came in and kicked out the farmers and gave it to people who couldn't use the land, and now look at it. its fucked up.
thsnkd sooo muvh for this video, it was a real eye opener to the recycling side of things and how shops these days are starting to lose quality and rip us off, making their product as cheap as possible.
That's what I like about Rocketboom. Usually, I'm against their "Know your meme" section because it's profiting from something that belongs to the internet, pretty much what happened with lolcats and failblog. But I like this micro documentaries.
Agreed. And that include cars. Have you noticed that cars don't last as long as the old ones?
In the sense that, you CAN see old Volkswagen in the streets, and those are older than 10 years. Back in the days, German and American cars were made to last a lifetime.
We should take the welfare people and have them earn a living scraping things out like these people.

Recycling is honorable... These guys can come teach us a thing or two here in the U.S.

You can do this at home, reinventing stuff you already have, it just needs a little creativity

Garbage collectors should begin making their own recycling business. Come on, it's almost costless!
baabaaer 2 years ago
Totally! Portland, Oregan has a program where refitted trash trucks collect recycling on the same routes, sometimes at the same time. Sooooo easy.

Did anyone catch what the garbage collector's reason behind the strike was? Why do they care if the recyclers pick things up too?
