Yeah... screaming should NOT hurt. If it does - you need to retrain your vox. There should be no pain associated with screaming/growling, otherwise you are damaging yourself and could blow out your chords. Ex: Avenged Sevenfold. He used to scream. Now just listen to him try. Sad (No, I'm not a fan). I recommend to go watch The Zen of Screaming by Melissa Cross. Her client list is pretty stunning.
