What this is simulating is wave run-up over an inclined surface like for example a coastal defense scheme. The system employs the technology used in Dam Stilling Basins. Dam Stilling Basins are used to dissipate the energy from the water flowing from the top of the Dam, to below, down the Spillway. What we are trying to produce is the hydraulic jump, which is a natural phenomenon, which results in turbulence and hence reduction of energy within the flow.
@59AJ59 They're part of a dam's spillway system, put at the end usually of the spillway. They dissipate the kinetic energy of the water to prevent erosion of the dam.
@THEFINALHAZARD They're also designed to help slow water in the case of a dam break, in the hopes they can dissapate the energy some before it finally gets to the lowlands. Any bit of structure the water hits is enough to start slowing it down, and thus by time for the people below it to escape.
This will prevent damages and lost of lives during heavy flood. Nice experiment.
