I don't know why, but ever since being introduced to U2 about a year ago I've never actually listened to any songs from Zooropa in their entirety because they sounded too abstract for me at the time. But I think now I'm starting to rediscover the meaning behind these songs.
Also, who doesn't like a music video that explicitly tells you what the people are doing?
God I feel old... I didn't realise how long it had been since this video came out. It feels like it was just yesterday. I recall secretly loving this video, I must have been 14 or 15 at the time. How time flies...
midnight is when the day begins. a man dreams of leaving but he always stays behind. these are the days when we look for something other. BEAUTIFUL!! a pean to the afterlife, and lessons for this one. U2 foReVer!!
Wikipedia: "Bono wrote the lyrics with his late mother in mind. He explains that it was a "strange experience to receive, in the post, from a very distant relative, early Super 8 footage of my mother, aged 24, younger than me, playing a game of rounders in slow motion." The footage depicted Bono's mother at a wedding as the maid of honour, wearing a lemon-colored dress. The film footage inspired Bono to write lyrics about using film to recreate and preserve memory."

People will probably crucify me for this but oh well. I love U2, they are my favourite rock band, but this song is cheesy. Bono is singing like a girl and Edge is barely even playing. This song doesn't even come close to being as good as anything on Achtung Baby or the Joshua Tree. Only thing good about this song is that it's creative, to me it just doesn't sound like the high quality rock I have come to expect from U2.
You are certainly entitled to your own opinion and I love both Achtung Baby and The Joshua Tree. Despite this, I happen to think Zooropa is one of U2's best albums and this is my favorite song from this album full of gems.
To take risks and to break the standards to come up with this is what defines music. Nowadays there is no experimentation in music no feelings just money and money and money. Even today's U2 is part of that. I miss the 90s and the 80s
Find a quiet moment and a dark room.. earplugs, volume pretty high and play it about 3 times - no videos, no images, just close you eyes and concentrate on the sounds
I know why people don't get it but when you do, it's hypnotic, haunting, beautiful.
Not claiming you'll ever get it but when U2 fans open their minds to the less commercial side, a whole new universe opens up
No that was "Mirror Ball Man" when he dressed in silver with a cowboy hat. Macphisto wore gold with makeup and had an odd accent. Oh and had devil horns too.
Wow, memories. I was a sophmore in HS when this came out. The video was just mind blowing as well as the song.
U2 really is one of the greatest rock bands of all time. And they've got staying power too, everything even up to present day has been amazing. The only band I've made it a point of, for over 20 years to get each and every album from. No matter what my tastes in music may be, if they release..I buy it.
Spent a week in my home office crying with this song repeating after my Mom died. It was several years later that I read he had written this about his Mother. Go figure.
Thanks, ReclinerMan! I loved this video when I saw it years ago, and have been looking for it. Good to see it again.
Thanks, also, to those who explained the biographical elements behind the song (Larry Mullen's mother also died when he was a teen), and to the person who explained about Muybridge.

The song is an ode to media being able to create memory. See, Bono was sent a home film of his mother before she died. That got him to thinking about the happiness of her mother in the film with her lemon dress, and the pathos of him not being able to be with his mother again. All that's left is memory -- caught on moving picture.
