What Seattle said. magic . . . fewy on you. Just when is the time and how else are we to introduce new vocabulary to our children, and elevate their minds as well as our educational levels/standards at the same time?
I thought Ms. O being an "Optimist" was a much better characteristic for her, as it's a more positive trait, plus "obstinate" is not a word most kindergardners are going to know or understand. Plus, is someone who's obstinate going to think that they are obstinate?
@TuxedoAllure I think you're a bit confused....The second song in this clip (as well as the second song in Miss I's clip) is not from the updated/"modern" version of The Letter People. After the TV show entered production, New Dimensions in Education (the original owners of the classroom program) changed O and I's traits to "Optimist" and "Incredible Inventor." Since the show already filmed the Meet Miss I and O episodes by that time, their original traits were kept throughout the series.
@letterpeopleland I just think I conveyed my intent improperly. What I meant by "modern" was the the "transformed" or "new version" of the series [series, not always being a tv, the idea of the letter people went through an overhaul]. Are the characters in the second song considered Letter People? Are they from the revamp or should I use another word? Are the songs featured on the second part of the videos image songs for the "revamped" MsI and MsO? I still like the two "other" songs.
@TuxedoAllure Based on what you said, I still don't think you understand. There are two versions of The Letter People, the original 1972 version and the updated 1990 version. The 1972 version originally had Miss O as Obstinate and Miss I as Itchy Itch, but they were later changed to Optimistic Optimist and Incredible Inventor-both of these traits were from the 1972 series. In 1990, Miss O became Opposite and Miss I became Impossible Inches. So no, the second songs are NOT form the revamp.
@letterpeopleland After watchign MR D I finally get it. The 2nd song is from the learning/in-school program. I can be think. Thank you for working with me on the understanding of the videos.
i started using the word obstinate after i saw this episode when i was about 5 or so, and my uncle didn't believe it was a real word... he felt pretty silly when he looked it up.
With her hair and eyebrows, I think her full name was really Miss Jackie-O. Seriously, I think using the word Obstinate encouraged kids to stretch their vocabulary and linguistic skills. From what I've seen so far, the revamped versions of the Letter People are too PC for me. Give me the classics any day.
@tsavoy71 I remember learning the word obstinate from Miss O in kindergarten, and now l use "the opposite of doing what somebody wants you to do when they want you to do it" as a way of explaining the word to my students. :)
yeah man i remember in kindergarden i actually thought to myself "boy obstianate is such a huge word for me! isn't there an easier word to describe her? and why is she so mean? i wish she was nice! and i also did not appreciate that all the vowels were women and consenants were men because there are soooo few vowels and i totally see the letter m and n and v and k as women! i'm glad they changed the song to optimist...
Damn I intensely hated Miss O. She was so annoying, especially in the book I had. She always seemed to be the one pissing everybody off. After all these years, I still hate her, lol.
well... 27 years for me and i remember the song. but back in school we didn't have the video, or film, or slides... just an inflatable Miss O, and sang the song that was played on a 45.
Well, as long as you don't emulate her TOO much, I'm sure we'd get along. :) Seriously, towards the end of the show she seemed to be in a lot more episodes, even as a background character! (There's one instance in the Mr. D episode where she's in the background during a party scene, and she's not moving at all, so methinks a puppeteer stuck her on a post to make the scene look more 'full'.)

Does the modern singer sing all of the modern songs for the female characters. I have not heard all of the "new show" songs?

Miss O's Obstinate song has always stuck with me since I was a kid. I think I prefer the Optimist song better.

I hate the new positive song, the original Ms. O was a diva and proud!
Julietjeske 4 years ago
She is saying my inner monologue, I LOVE HER! She tells "The Man" where to stick it. My favorite character, my favorite song!

As a little kid, even years after the change, Miss O was still kept Obstinate in my classroom.

I soooooooooooooo remember the revamped song. In KingerG we had these but never saw the videos we had the blow up dolls and the record! LMAO!!!!
ambularkoolaid 4 years ago
Miss O seems to be the only letter person whoes appearance is totally different on televsion than it was in terms of the inflateable dolls.
SpitballSparky 4 years ago
That's because the PC era dictates that Miss O is not "overweight"...which being an "O" shape would kind of insinuate.
