  • several different ma3bu4 in different styles of wushu. an experienced master/teacher is absolutely essential to guide you towards the right posture; it is not the endurance of pain that should be a challenge for your mind and body but patience for the relaxation of internal muscles (especially illiopsoas group) and increasing awareness of the correct postural alignment; it may take months or years to be able to loosen up and relax into meaningful stance training whether done for wushu or health

  • horse stance is not about endurance; apologies to all those who are going to be disappointed at reading this; similar to zhan zhuang postures, if you work against the clock or think you shall build strength and suppleness by trying to endure low stances, you will only reap disappointment; to start to train towards a functional horse stance, one needs to understand correct body alignment first and understand what particular stance of what style they are working towards and why(!).

  • Impressive.

    My conclusion about the horse stance is it is way too risky if you don't have the right instructor. There are much better exercises to build muscle and pain endurance... it is not worth doing this exercise and potentially messing up your knees for life...

  • I must admit the stance look good,but you know we train in this stance for 1 hr(workin your way up of course) but lower than this is not good.The reason is that it mess up the knees,really no good foundation,not being leveled.I teach & train Northern shaolin & Southern shaolin for over 35yr.As you know southern is more upright & northern is lower stance.I tell them to put the back against the walls (beginners 1 min & work they way off the wall.As you know in correct form you shouldn't c ur feet

  • A foundation for building rugged individualism, to be taken many echelons higher. I hold my horse stance for 6 minutes, and immediately perform 300 hindu squats.

  • @AnimaeLibera To hold a form like that for 3 minutes without any shaking or wobbling is impressive to me. He is completely convincing and jumsps straight in and holds it - his form is low and solid and his body is fluid and loose, his back is vertical straight. To do that so firmly for 3 mins he could obviously continue far longer but has chosen to demonstrate 3.

    its not a demonstration of impressive time, its the form and the way he holds that form thats impressive.

    I have seen better ma bu's. his stance is alright, but not worth an OMG :P

    and you say "he could obviously continue far longer" but I disagree, look at his face during the last minute. he could hold it maybe for 4-5 min, but not much more ...

  • @macedmatt I have been practicing martial arts, wrestling, tai chi etc. for 22 years. My goal is not to hold a long horse stance but I do a lot of horse stance in all the disciplines I study and practice. Make sure the quality of your stance is very good first. Then be concerned with time 2nd!

  • nice stance but your right foot should have been str8 not pointing out, then your stance is correct otherwise is sloppy.

  • What's more important than the time you hold your sei ping ma (horse stance) is to do it perfectly. I can do it for 4 minutes at that depth. But if i make sure everything is done right that time goes down to 1,5 minutes.

    Sei ping ma is one of those exercises that is great if executed perfectly, but not really any good if there are little mistakes in my humble opinion.

  • @Samurailord Feet must be parallel and pointing forward. Knees should be exactly over your feet. Hips should be rotated forward (like when doing a pelvis thrust^^). Back is perfectly straigt. Shoulders low. Head straigt and looking forward, not down. Hands should be doing the Hung Gar Hand and straight forward with elbows looking towards the floor. Everything in your body is tensed up to the max. Breathing slow and deep out and into your tam-tiem (2 fingers below your belly button). Feet rooted.

  • I work this in my Muay Thai training to strengthen my legs and at 2 minutes i am feeling it!!! But like you said, the more I focus my mind the less I feel the pain and can just go longer. Good work.

    im standing 3~3,5min

  • @noobblet1996 Post yourself doing your horse stance on youtube! 7-8 minutes is worthless unless you are as low as I am in this video! I Guarantee you are not low enough! 3 minutes is perfect if you are low enough. Then add weight!

  • @ShaolinCenter Most modern wushu athletes can do this no? Considering the rules state a 90 degree leg angle I would imagine that it would be as deep as yours too.

  • Oh god, i remember learning this when i was a yellow belt like 5 years ago, was so painful at the time, but now thats like nothing, and is something i do before every lower body workout.
